I just finished Blood Meridian. I fucking hated it. Considering that, what should be my next novel? I am just now getting into audiobooks and novels. I haven't read much. No Longer Human, Interview With A Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and Blood Meridian were my starters. I liked No Longer Human, but it wasn't fantastic. As I'm sure is common on this site, I read a lot more manga - or at the very least that is what I can claim to have read most outside of Tabletop RPG Manuals. My favorite book currently is Oyasumi PunPun. I like most of Inio Asano's older work quite a bit, and I would like to read a novel that feels closer to those in tone. Can a nigga get some recommendations that isn't just the /lit/ chart? I went through that with /mu/, and I learned how hard it is to go into that shit blind. I found a lot of great things, but I also put up with a lot of stuff I didn't like until I found them.
>>25469177>I hated Blood Meridian>I liked no longer human.>Doesn't expand as to why for either.>Give me recommendations based on that.?Brother say something.
>>25469177you need to tell us why you liked something and why you didn't like something>but like that's hard and like I don't know cause like I just didn't like it Try
Read project hail mary by andy weir
>>25469200I guess you're right. I didn't like Blood Meridian because it was 99% describing the environments and seemed to be of the opinion that it would upset me with its ultra violence. I grew tiresome. I liked the gunpowder scene with Holden, and I liked the ferry part, but for the most part I felt extremely exacerbated by the use of long form language to describe something. I've heard Redwall is like this when it comes to food. I seem to remember The Hobbit being kind of this way, too. But It wasn't as boring in The Hobbit considering it was describing things that mostly don't exist like trolls or Elves or what have you. I liked No Longer Human for the struggle of the main character to have any sense of real relationship. I still think about the drinking game they play, where I believe they were on a roof. Generally No Longer Human felt more intimate than Blood Meridian did. I liked that the MC in No Longer Human was very aware of his faults and contemplated on them regularly.
>>25469177Sounds like you enjoy overly self conscious man literature. Try Dubliners and Crime and Punishment.
>>25469205I spoiled it for myself by watching the movie. A coworker told me it was her new favorite movie. I wasn't even aware it was a book until afterwards.
>>25469217No he needs to try new genres he's clearly not enjoying those. Prob only reads them for emo idealism or something. I used to do that too but I realized it was retardedHe might like the style of japanese writing doe idk I thought no longer human was dogshit
>>25469218I thought The Martian was a much better book than the movie. For Hail Mary, they were both kinda the same. Big downgrade from The Martian in either case. Also listened to the audiobook of The Martian (read by R. C. Bray), and thought it was excellent. Was going to recommend it to someone I knew, but then I saw that they fucking pulled it form audible and replaced it with a re-recording by fucking Wil Wheaton of all people. So shan't be recommending that to any more people.
>>25469212Then before reading a book, investigate the language the author uses, and avoid books where the author is very descriptive like Pynchon. And avoid all classical books for now since they tend to be complex and very descriptive. Try more modern polished works. Perhaps first person feels more enjoyable to read for you so check that.Personally based on what you said I recommend Crime and Punishment, it focuses heavily on the psyche of Raskolninov, the protagonist. That said you might get confused by the Russian names so if you want something easier to get into and more "manga" then try The eye of the world.
>>25469247Blood Meridian, at least from my perspective, is pretty far removed overly self conscious man literature. I thought it was about how the timeless and beautiful, yet harsh and dangerous environment of the arid reaches of Western North America consume people in their quests to make a life in it.
>>25469248I'll check out The Martian. That might be a good start.>>25469251I'll check our The Eye Of The World. That sounds promising.>>25469247Reading what for emo idealism?
>>25469274sorrry for incomprehensible Nigger babbling ebonics I'm black irl and hung over rn
OP here again. I forgot to mention I did listen to an audiobook of Brave New World, and I thought it was really good. Disappointing not a single thing has been able to adapt it properly.
>>25469177Read Yukio Mishima's confessions of a mask.It is similar to No Longer Human in some ways. Except that the main character is gay. You sound like it would resonate with you.(You sound like a faggot)
