If just cribbing from epic poetry is “literary,” then you should have given a Nobel prize to Ezra Pound or Louis Zukofsky. The main issue with Tolkien is that he became the blueprint for all big fat fantasy, and he wasn’t even the best fantasist coming out in the postwar period. Even Poul Anderson’s The Broken Sword beats Fellowship of the Ring in terms of kennings, poetic flair, and Eddic language.
