How do you guys plan out your story before writing? Also when actually planning out how the characters will appear on the paper, how do you actually build out the characters and then decide how their dialogue/voice will appear like on the page?
You need to make character sheets.
>>25478258Can you walk me through what you put in your character sheets? Like Backstory, motivations, appearance, etc etc etc.

>>25478294This doesn't really help though, im writing historical fiction
>>25478256I tend to vomit my story out onto the word doc and then type out a revised "first draft" based on the vomit
>>25478256>when actually planning out how the characters will appear on the paper, how do you actually build out the characters and then decide how their dialogue/voice will appear like on the page? There's a piece of advice I heard about writing that said, "characterization is simply what differentiates one character from another." On your first draft, all the characters are gonna be the same, and the prose is probably not gonna be that much different or be filled with your turns of phrase. But when revising, you can take the existing dialog and actions and take them wherever the fuck you want.Another piece of advice I heard, though it's not one I adhere to, is to start with an archetype and see which ways you'll keep it in line with said archetype and which ways you'll break it. For a basic-bitch example: a shy nerd but also really good at handball. Hates math but is good at it regardless. Likes to draw, et cetera. The reason you see shit characterization is that writers are only interested in themselves and not in others

The OP of /wg/ (currently >>25475127) has a lot of basic resources on how to start writing. There are also how-to books like "The Anatomy of Story" by John Truby.>>25478294D&D 1st Edition! That takes me back.
