Just finished it! It's a tremendous collection, really incredible writing, I thought. 'Sword & Stone's is by far the most light-hearted of the stories; the later books are deep and tragic, "elbow deep in blood". Def seems to be written as an ode to Britain (English + Gaelic) cultural history with the word usage, but I eventually stopped hitting up the dictionary and just inferred word meaning so I could finish. Hope you enjoy it. Has made me want to tackle Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' next, similar themes on why do men fight and what is "right"

I found it pretty disappointing after reading all thr classical Arthurian stories and hearing that this was the definitive modern version. It just meandering and self-indulgent, and full of that style of tryhard British humor that's not as wity as it thinks it is, which wasn't nearly as bad as White's waxing endlessly about why war is bad. I don't want to read pages and pages of some old queer wallowing in self-pity.Read Guite instead.
