I'm going to shill this here because discoverability on RR seems like it's in the crapper from when I released my first book. My retention is decent, but only like 80 people have even clicked to read the 1ast chapter. I was thinking about running ads at ~100k words released, but maybe I should do it at 75. I like realistic women (and don't go to RR for it), I don't like literary trannies (but will tolerate them if the story is fun). Got a hankering recently for some evil overlord stories recently. Thought about writing something, maybe just as a warmup between other projects, but a thought's occured to me.How do you actually -make- an evil overlord story that readers will enjoy? What would Spectral Soul do to seething incels?
>>25484672The thing to note is that in most of the fantasy world in this genre, the difference between male and female is essentially null and void. This would naturally drastically impact the socialization of women in that universe. There is no reason for a woman that was raised in a world where anybody can become a walking nuke regardless of sex to have the same outlook on life as an average modern woman.

Tldr most slop authors are terrible and terrible at writing women so yeah obviously people develop an aversion.

>>25484907The more time I spend talking to women, the more I realize that there is literally NOTHING that is too absurd to be coming out of the mouth of a woman. And if something can come out of the mouth of one woman, it can come out of the mouth of a group of women. You see people bitching and moaning about "men writing women" all the time, but the biggest mistake that *men* writing *women* make is that they write them *like men*. Making them think, and feel, and act like men. But nobody EVER complains about this. Which reveals to you that, the thing people actually don't like about "men writing women" isn't that they write women like women, but that they write women in what to-them is unflattering ways. But to a man, or to a woman who thinks that women should act like men, a woman being written *like a woman* is always going to seem unflattering.Anyway. If your female characters (not a specific female character, individuals are kind of excepted from the rules, because of individual variation, but when all of them do this) aren't constantly being unreasonable, emotional, dogmatic, and very socially inappropriate when it comes to discussing sexual things or their interpersonal relationships, you're probably not writing women properly.

The easy route is making it a comedy (Overlord), tangentially related is To Be a Power in the Shadows. The harder route is making the reader empathize with the MC, usually with good internal rationalizations or intelligence. I'd wager this is where Reverend Insanity fits but I dropped it as it was boring as shit. >>25484969>missing element simping for womenNo, you have to actually write characters that are interesting and usually have some type of charm, not banal SoL shit. I'm using charm not as physical attraction but as a pull: something that's fun/interesting, I want to see more of that. At this point if I hear the word system I get shudders. Here it just ruins the flow of the story and I one stray thought away from just being filtered. Then directly after we have a real hook, finally something happens>dumping all points into charm>absolute first interaction with a native>have you heard of our lord and savior, crop rotations?kekComedy varies but mostly good enough.Dialogue/interactions are probably your strongest point along with formatting it in an JP/LN way. Story of MC expectation vs reality has potential.MC personality leaves a lot to be desired. Comedy+OP MC can be fun but mostly it's done badly by western authors. I don't really care for an MC that has somewhat of a teenage arrogance. He is dumbsmart and thats fine although I see people complain in the reviews. If you go too much into the goonerism it will probably be shit unless you do a twist on it like a foot fetishist or something like Prison School. But yeah sorry, hard for me to really give you more nuanced feedback here as it just isn't my cup of tea as mentioned.

He's a scholarship kid at a fancy private school, where his mom works as a lunch lady. While he is working odd jobs to save up for an upcoming school trip, a monster that was meant to be some rich brat's birthday present breaks free and starts wreaking havoc.Insert doesn't run.Using his quick wit, he lures the monster into a trap and kills it, earning more EXP than he knows what to do with.Big mistake.Arrested for illegal kill-stealing, Insert is faced with a choice: join a shady government agency and work for them as a teenage spy, or let his mother lose her job and get saddled with more debt than either of them could pay off in a lifetime. It's not really a choice at all.Thrust into the world of spies and secrecy, Insert must endure brutal training to become the agency's perfect hidden weapon. His first assignment: go undercover at a private hunting camp for rich kids, owned by one of the wealthiest men in the country. On the surface, everything looks perfect: green hills, beautifully manicured forests, and "tamed" monsters stripped of their fangs, ready to be hunted for sport by a bunch of spoiled teenagers. But beneath the glamour, something dangerous is brewing: an experimental weapon that doesn't just put every kid at camp in danger, but threatens to upend the world as Insert knows it.Alone, out-leveled, and way out of his depth, Insert Namehere is the only thing standing between a madman and the city where his mother lives.

I did not expect the most tedious part of writing litrpg to be writing the status screens. Downside of using markdown I guess.
>>25487084I get that some people write to an audience that wants them but I think most authors immediately minmise them for this reason.
>>25487089I was doing that at first but I read more litrpg to try and better understand the appeal and now I unironically think it's really fun, if done wel. I have put more of it into my story, although I still I have a """clever""" way to avoid an actual omnipresent god-system that hopefully people will like and not get pissed off at.There's still an element of almost lovevraftian inhuman technohorror to the sloppiest slop and how it works but some of it is cool. >>25487092>>25487084Don't wanna be that guy, but it sounds like the perfect thing to ask AI without killing the "integrity" of your work. Just work a few by hand to use as examples and keep it updated. Or build a small program that makes it for you, you just click + or insert a number

>>25487199Well, if it were that easy, then why is that anon complaining?I'm assuming it's not a matter of just changing a few lines; there's HTML involved, centering and such, and adding could be a pain.
>>25487165AI wouldn't necessarily help. I use it (not for writing, just research and to automate the process I came up with for creating certain kinds of names (into and out of dead languages with some novel orthography and other stuff)) but it's more how fiddly it is to actually write the things and get them lined up right even if I know exactly what I want, and then also have to redo all of it in the royal road editor. I do think once I'm used to it I will write a script to help, especially to handle the markdown -> rr editor transition.
>>25487229*Write the things at first
I mostly use AI to red-team. Makes it easier to avoid me writing more complex fights without it making the obvious outcome so blatant and with the newer models they actually come up with shit that sometimes makes for a more interesting trajectory than just the MC winning cleanly.
If your MC does not kill his wife during sex then goes on a murderhobo cultivation quest in chapter 1 then you lost me as a reader.
>>25487240I do something similar, but I never accept plot recommendations, I just use them to find problems and then create my own solutions (if I agree that it's a problem). I think I’ve developed a pretty interesting progression system. But I have no idea what to do with the story (that isn’t your generic tragic young man slapping arrogant young master’s face and rising to the top all the isekai stories like to make fun of.)Each person is born with a rank that determines their physical attributes, number of skill slots, and the rank of equipment they can use.Slaying monsters can yield skill cores. Equipping a skill core grants access to its skill and allows the user to earn mastery points by using it. As mastery points accumulate, the skill gains levels and becomes more powerful. Skills can have both active and passive effects. A Fireball skill, for example, might also grant heat resistance.Skill cores can be equipped or removed at skill altars. They can also be traded, fused, or sacrificed.Skill cores can be fused in a cauldron with additional materials. The skills provide the foundation for the resulting skill, while the materials influence its passive effects. Better cauldrons offer higher success rates.Sacrificing a skill core grants rank points. Rarer and higher level skills provide more points. Once enough rank points have been accumulated, a person can increase their rank, gaining additional skill slots and access to better equipment.Weapons and apparel can also be upgraded and possess passive effects. A person can only use equipment of their rank or lower.A person’s birth rank cannot exceed the rank of their highest ranked parent, but the exact result is random. Two B rank parents, for example, could have a child anywhere from F rank to B rank, but never A rank. A higher birth rank provides a significant advantage from the start.Wealth provides an even greater advantage. Powerful families can buy rare skill cores, equipment, and fusion materials for their children. They can also sacrifice valuable skill cores to raise their children’s ranks. Wealthy families can therefore accelerate their children’s progression far beyond that of ordinary families, provided they consider the child worth the investment.Rank and skill level have no theoretical ceiling, but the requirements increase sharply with each level. Most people eventually reach a practical limit. Only the exceptionally talented or wealthy can continue to advance.

I've read (and enjoyed) worm, twig, the gods are bastards, and pith. Most of the mother of learning but I think I got distracted and didn't want to start again. Most recent one I tried was super supportive but got really turned off by the time it was in space. Any recs based on that? Can't stand chinkshit, litrpg, tropey nonsense.
>>25488688This is the only time I'm peddling my stuff this month, since you mentioned Worm and Super Supportive: Labors of a Paragon. Based in 2013 US and not China, not litRPG. It's capeshit, though, so it does have tropes associated with that.
I know it's typical plot convention for portal fantasy to get to the secondary world in the first chapter but...Will readers tolerate waiting 3 chapters for the secondary world to be introduced? So far if I was to explain my current plot outline and actively worked on chapters it would be>chapter1: establishes protag is a physically and mentally competent vigilante motivated by justice as well as heavily foreshadows stuff through blatant imagery>Chapter2: builds suspense and actually shows tracking and detective skills that will be a constant within the storyTo be honest chapter 2 is most likely to be totally cut in later drafts. But I will wait on feedback before making that decision final. I think the main reason I really wrote it is because I felt a transition from totally mundane to totally supernatural would be too abrupt without a scene in between to shift the tone. >Chapter 3: actually making the deal that leads to the protag being sent to the secondary world, as well as a extended fight scene as the "test of worthiness" Still actively drafting so structural change is very easy at this stage. While I know in medias res is a thing I would rather not use such a opening just as a key jangle if at all possible.

>>25488998Speaking for myself, I love fully alternative lines of techological development, but I get that's a big ask. If I was speaking more broadly, I think which ever setting allows you to justify lots and lots of swords the best. The average fantasy reader might as well be a strong magnet with how attracted they feel towards swords.
>>25489020Yes. It narrows it down to 1879 to 1936 in a technical sense with a more narrow cutoff being 1914.
>>25489049there was a race for Africa in the Cold War dominoes period (which we largely lost), and a race for Africa ongoing now (which we're probably losing, along with everything else)and during the 18th century and Napoleonic Wars the European powers were planting and raiding each other's outposts and colonies
>>25489053There are other races involving Africa, but the Scramble for Africa is one specific thing from the 1880s to the 1910s
>>25488998Pseudo-victorian era but find an excuse for swords to still be relevant
>>25488988The times where I've seen it done decently, it's been as an extended first chapter. That said, it has to be fast paced and/or a genuine mystery. Otherwise, the overall sentiment is "just get on with it", and many will either skim or skip your chapter. I think a flashback in narration works well with quelling that sentiment; you start in the new world or while 'portalling', then speak about how you got there.Nevertheless, I don't read many fictions where an extended fight scene is something to look forward to, so your mileage may vary.
>>25488998Depends with or without a system. With a system, you're more limited because gun skills suck, so the more swords, the better.
>>25489095I might just have to write two versions. One that follows chronological order and the other that starts in medias res with the protag then flashing back with the framing device of him explaining how he got there. >>25489174The point isn't that that you're writing for Chinese readers. The slop genre and the slop readers in the west is down stream of what's read in the east. You're playing catch up with stuff they've already gotten bored to death of.
>>25489192My inspiration is the pulp stories from America. Since magaziense are a dying/dead medium it makes sense that the online space has taken it's place. I have never given a shit about what China does regarding literature. They have very little influence over western tropes or trends at all. Even in web novels Japan is the overwhelming eastern influence of the western market. Not China.
>>25489170If your story is just "random guy isekais", though it may be popular at the start by virtue of most readers self-inserting as random guy, you just have nothing to work with. Though at least it's miles better than "teenager isekais" or "hospital-bound-since-forever isekais", where you simply can't expect any actual skill or knowledge from them, so what is even the point. Plus you can't self-insert.
is /wng/ for Web Novels in General, or is it for isekai and litrpg only?
>>25484045I'm kinda tempted to reboot my slop.
>>25489217/wng/ centres around RR, so it indirectly puts focus on those genres. You're unlikely to get much response if you're talking space opera, contemporary or capeshit.
>>25489217In general. Fantasy is preferred but not required.
>>25489220Shongma balls
>>25489053The "Scramble for Africa" refers specifically to the period of European wars of conquest in Africa from the start of the Anglo-Zulu War to either the start of WWI or the end of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War.I did not say race. I said Scramble.
>>25489217Mostly RR stuff, and that's probably isekai. But you can always get some (you)s by telling these people to read Worm.
>>25489204>My inspiration is the pulp stories from America. Then why are posting here? Go to /wg/>Even in web novels Japan is the overwhelming eastern influence of the western market. Not China. The only influence Japan has is shitty harem and coomer tropes
>>25489279isekai, don't forget that>>25489204>They have very little influence over western tropes or trends at allLMAOany kind of progression and litrpg is directly or indirectly influenced by 50s/60s Chinese manhwa comics and fantasy serials, nobody ever talked about levels before thatand virtually all the martial arts stuff you see in movies today comes from China by way of Hong Kong cinemago take a look at fistfights in 70s or even some 90s Hollywood movies, particularly Westerns, you'll see how incredibly slow and stilted they are
>>25489204RR has a massive chink userbase, who whine loudly about animeshit
>>25489297Transmigration was before it, japanese copied it (poorly) and called it isekai.
>>25489308this is disingenuous; isekai is a collection of specific tropes that make it a genre unto itselfhell, that's why "native isekai" is even a thing.
>>25489322>hell, that's why "native isekai" is even a thing.It's new, it wasn't even a thing before 2025.
>>25489204Don't let the weebs discourage you. That said, they are somewhat right about what the median RR used is going to expect, from what I've seen. I'm writing a sci Fi story that doesn't even have mecha in it so I get where you're coming from. There's a much lower ceiling for both of us.
>>25489332
>>25489333I like scifi but most scifi always devolves into smut and/or drama. If your scifi is anything like that then kys
>>25489308>Transmigration was before it, japanese copied it (poorly) and called it isekai.1. The earliest works to be labeled isekai were not transmigration stories.2. Transmigration is not an established genre.>>254893221. "Native isekai" is a memetic joke. It is not a thing. It's literally just a troll name for high fantasy.2. While there are tropes associated with isekai stories, none of them are actually vital to the genre, and isekai stories can vary wildly in tropes.
Webnovel fooled me into thinking I was a decent writer by bloating my viewer count. Really sad now that I know my real viewer count is not even a hundredth of the numbers shown.
>>25489349The term native isekai is a joke, yes, but it has validity to it, considering you instinctively understand when something is native isekai vs just fantasy. Isekai tropes may not have vital individual tropes, but they do have a necessary subset that makes them isekai and not portal fantasy.>hurr durr isekai = portal fantasyno, it isn't, hence why we're saying isekai
>no one plays JRPGs anymore so "people" just call worlds inspired by it native isekai
>>25489339There's some drama, and even a romance arc, but it's mainly about technological and military progression (after a few chapters of slow burn to establish some things(there are still multiple gigantic explosions and similar things in the first chapter)). The plot is structured around combat and acquiring weapons, progressing from what is basically a cyberpunk ripoff of "red dawn" (the 80s movie) to Warhammer 40k and/or The Culture tier combined arms (space battles, overpowered marines,. ridiculous exotic super weapons, all of it). It is an unabashed pastiche of shit that made me onions face when I was 12. I'm even patterning the love interest (romance is a very small aspect, won't show up for 50-100 chapters) after a couple of girls I had a crush on back then. I'm not worried about it flopping, I have a more traditional fantasy isekai litrpg story set up next. But this is way more fun to write, for me.
>>25489363>considering you instinctively understand when something is native isekai vs just fantasyInsofar as I instinctively understand when something is high fantasy, yes.Acting like native isekai has any meaning beyond that misses the point of the joke.>Isekai tropes may not have vital individual tropes, but they do have a necessary subset that makes them isekai and not portal fantasy.Portal fantasy is a subgenre of isekai. The reason they are separate is not all isekai stories involve fucking portals, not because of some inherent trope difference between the two beyond that. It's literally just squares vs rectangles. There are isekai stories that are bog standard portal fantasies.
Oh God, the genre police. Didn't have enough with just music?
>>25488688These comes to mind:>Practical Guide to Evil>Perfect Run
>>25484045Wu Hao? No, Hu Tao.
>>25489397Right? People that act like X can't be Y genre even when it fits the literal definition of Y are fucking idiots.Genres should inherently be maximally inclusive. It doesn't make sense to try and apply exclusivity to genres. If you want more specificity, that's what subgenres are for.
Is 700/3500 words of chapter one being system/screen mechanics (mixed into dialogue and other things) too much? It's not any more than gifted's shit about how reincarnation works but isn't quite as high stakes as a demon trying to eat someone.
>>25489585No that's fine. I've read stuff where half of it was system shit. Similarly "water writing" is a common tactic where you constantly repeat information.
>>25489399It's WU H-A-O.>Wu Hao got his first glimpses of the Tang clan's gardens. He'd heard of them before, in passing from Prefectural something-or-other Shi, when he'd been at the Jin clan. He'd figured that the reputation was mostly just embellished. Why is there a Tang clan in the novel? Also when are we gonna encounter superior gu cultivators and soul path cultivators? And why the hell it takes like like a whole week to release a single chapter????
>>25489585WTF is system shit>>25489587and WTF is "water writing"?
>>25489585I skim a lot of system shit unless there is a strong relevance to the story. Numbers are meaningless unless you give them meaning, which most authors don't. Endless skill descriptions are also a massive pain to read. Sure, it's cool and you want the reader to understand the limitations, but if it's going to change tomorrow, then there's no point to reading it. It's especially bad where the MC is choosing skills or classes, and you know they are just going to pick The One(tm), or you don't, so you scroll forward to see their pick and scroll back to read what it is.
>>25489624>System shit'attribute X does a, b, and c. You level it up by doing α, β, γ. This is how you unlock perks" Explaining how the system works and what anything non standard on a screen means. >>25489625 It's very relevant, one of the characters is an oddball race with some unique stats. I want to make sure the readers know what progression will look like so they can skip out early if they don't like my take on it. >>25489587Thanks. I'm kinda doing the water writing thing but something very dramatic happens at the end of chapter 1 and I don't want chapter 2 to be "well my parents are dead but now I'm going to spend three pages talking about my power levels" lol.
>>25489585I would not keep reading.
>>25489585I hate it. To me it essentially a sign of poor writing. The same as just randomly lore dumping shit without weaving it into the story. I skip, skim or outright drop when to much system shit appear, nobody is gonna read or compare changes. Too much information? No unless your story is extremely good I'm not studying it like a textbook.
ok gonna write a storyshould I pick Royal Road or WebNovel to post it on

>>25489204>My inspiration is the pulp stories from America.>replies to posts about isekai tropeI wish we could move /wng/ to another board, /lit/ is full of retards
>>25489832>Webnovel retains the right to create and own the copyright to derivative works, including comic adaptations, translations, and animations.>The agreement frequently covers prequels, sequels, and other continuations within the same IP universe.
>>25489832nta, you're right it's their contracts where you hand over their ip.The problem with posting there without signing with them is that they don't promote your story in the algo and nobody will read it. That's not even a scammy thing, obviously they're not going to promote your story over ones they make money off of. However they spam you with offers to sign and how great it will be.
So should I not bother crossposting to webnovel or are there no downsides unless I sign a contract (no one will ever want what I write so meaningless)I think I should crosspost to scribble and wattpad too
Webnovel sucks so much, there's stories I like with no audience that are basically stuck there because they took the deal.Nobody will read because it's hidden behind a paywall
>>25489902Yeah, crosspost everywhere, then quit before you have ten chapters out because you have no views, followers, or comments, and no motivation to continue, and leave your unfinished turd fragments all over the internet like the indian you are.

>>25489742>It's woven into the story, two characters are discussing the relative differences in their stats due to <plot hook>.then it heavily depends, you could post a snippet and I'll give feedback.>It gets info dumpy for maybe three paragraphs. It is one thing to say in chapter twenty go a bit more indepth into the system for a bit and another to spend chapter upon chapter of loredumping, systemdumping, or just throwing in an unimaginable amount of character names, locations, factions, politics, religions, etc instead of writing something interesting or enjoyable. Random fantasy trivia is not interesting unless it is related, yes sometimes it adds to the texture of the setting and can be interesting but most of the time the author is not weaving it in an enjoyable way. I hate Pale Lights for this, go read a couple of chapters, it is not a LitRPG.I'll note that the whole dumping the full character screen over and over is also pretty annoying, if doing so use bold text or something similar to highlight new changes. Preferably easy to read deltas (+5) or something. But really, the whole thing is so dumb.
>>25490140>or just throwing in an unimaginable amount of character names, locations, factions, politics, religions, etc instead of writing something interesting or enjoyableI agree, a perennial problem with SF/F, balancing loredumping and plotwhat's interesting or enjoyable to you though?

>>25488510ok what a skill altar? people make or natural? big diffokay pill refining but skill fusion.i mean not bad but i dont think most people would really care and its not that unique or anything. only thing with this is that lineages and wealthy fucks get a buncha early boosts which is the case for literally almost every power system. i think you should just add that you can make skills with materials, without needing everything to drop from monsters.
>>25490181oh thats probably fine, i mean look at primal hunter chapters with system shitman that guy likes writing long ass descriptions
>>25490149>balancing loredumping and plotYep, I find that usually balancing it out with enjoyable interactions/dialogue or actual plot progression is almost always the way to go. >what's interesting or enjoyable to you though?Comedies mostly as they usually sidestep the usual problems. But usually you want an interesting MC, not just smart/intelligent/whatever, some interesting perspective that will be enjoyable too read as the reader will spend a lot of time there. Non-MC characters are secondary but of course some of the best series have a cast that creates odd or fun interactions. Female MCs are generally to be avoided which is odd to say considering some of my favorites are female mc stories. Multiple PoV stories are almost always bad, if there sometimes, very seldom are other PoVs this is usually fine. The story is almost always dragged to a standstill for multiple PoV stories or the reader is stuck reading what is essentially filler.I read everything and too much really, but some commonly known WN/LN that comes to mind:>Youjo Senki (example of high detail story with a lot of enjoyable MC monologues)>Worm (large variation in story quality)>I Shall Seal the Heavens (still among the best xianxia)>Beware Of Chicken (decent enough)Other decently known:>Return of the Crazy Demon Wiki>Virtuous Sons: A Greco Roman Xianxia>Arrogant Young Master Template A Variation 4 (might have been system heavy)I remember reading The Gam3 a long time ago and it's one of the few LitRPG that had some interesting storyquests. Can't say the story was amazing, the MC was pretty boring.
>>25490215>Youjo Senki>nihilistic atheist edgelord right wing rambling>enjoyable MC monologue

>>25490266NTA, but multiple POVs are usually used by the author to hide how the main storyline is really weak and short. Most of GRRRM's chapters are just filler too
>>25490266not the same anon but this is for webnovels and prog fantasy. try reading multi-pov on rr and youll want to kill yourself with how boring it is, not to mention the shit pacing. more skillful technique -> more bad writers try using it -> more shit multi-pov stories -> more readers that click off multi-pov stories -> don't write multi-pov storiespeople who write female mcs usually aren't as progbrained like people who write male mcs, and generally like to include other themes. readers know this and will sometimes not want to read cause of it. usually not murder hobo chad (bad)
>>25490281>readers know this and will sometimes not want to read cause of it...a strange notion to me>more skillful technique -> more bad writers try using it -> more shit multi-pov stories -> more readers that click off multi-pov stories -> don't write multi-pov storiesfair enough>>25490273>multiple POVs are usually used by the author to hide how the main storyline is really weak and shortfair enough>Most of GRRRM's chapters are just filler tooBook 1, yes, a bit, but he got betterthe last 2 books were quite packed
>>25490215As you mentioned SF I'll add I also enjoyed>First Contact by Ralts BloodthorneBut can't say I completed it. As the story bounces around a bit you're not really hooked in the same way of normal storytelling progression.>>25490257kek, sure man. it's a comedy but I don't know what kind of low IQ retard you have to be to find it nihilistic or atheistic.>>25490266>is that your take on ASOIAF and Expanse too? Those are fine. Actual good writing such as good prose can almost be enjoyable to read almost regardless of content. We're more talking about lower quality writing such as WN/LNs. As such usually amateur writers and little editing to cut the fat.>>Female MCs are generally to be avoided>why? Most of the time they focus on inane shit. Many times it also devolves into useless forced drama or the author is woke for the sake of wokeness, becoming just grating or detracting from the story. I'm using wokeness very loosely here. No, I don't really care if the story is a power fantasy.Good author > Shit male MC > shit female MC. Majority of RR? Shit MC.>>interesting perspective that will be enjoyable too>specifically? That is of course up to the author to figure out. But this is one of the things comedies sidestep, they usually set up some emphasized traits for the character that they will then have to utilize creatively. I brought up Youjo Senki here because the MC monologues does this heavily. As the other anon put it "nihilistic atheist edgelord right wing rambling". But most of the stories I selected have an odd or have emphasized traits for the MC usually coloring their monologues heavily. Virtuous Sons might have the most balanced MCs, if you're interested actually has multiple PoVs and is pretty good, but I haven't read the last 50 chapters as I got caught up and forgot about it.
>>25490329Youjo senki is as much comedy as mein kampf

>>25490366It seems I did!
>>25490215not the other anon but>Youjo Senki>enjoyable monologuesif you have no self respect, maybe. The author without a micro ounce of show don't tell. Endless ramblings about theoretical war formations, useless lore, imagined scenarios, worldbuilding that somehow takes WW1 and makes it supremely boring.
>>25490391Eh, I don't care too defend it too much pretty much nothing there is even remotely true.>Endless ramblingsSure. It is 10x more enjoyable than reading LitRPG stat screens which is the topic.>about theoretical war formations???>useless loreI can't even imagine what you mean here? It's ww1/ww2, no "lore" to be had.>imagined scenarios???>worldbuilding that somehow takes WW1 and makes it supremely boringCan't fault you if you think that. It is still a LN which is usually a slight step above WN.But since we're on the topic post a good WW1/2 web novel.
>>25490431>WW1/2 web novel.do... do those exist?
>>25490443I've only found Youjo Senki to be the only good one. But eh, lets loosen it to web novel of modern warfare with modern weapons.>>25490379The MC is a peace and freedom loving libertarian (read:autistic) Japanese Salaryman that offends God by saying that a Good God cannot exist because injustice exist. If you want you could even call it a gnostic stance and it would fit but raging spergs (read: /pol/tards) believe he must then be a reddit atheist because he denies God.As punishment he is transported into alternate Europe a couple of years before WW1/WW2 as female baby with magical powers. A parody of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and has comedic undertones throughout, which is apparently hard for some 'tismos. The original WN is explicitly a comedy but the author is a /k/omrade so he goes all in.
>>25490443They're actually a quite popular genre in the Russian webnovel space, though mostly WW2. I'm sure the AI models today are good enough to give you a decent translation, so feel free to check them out if you're interested: https://author.today/
>>25490087Use Claude
>>25490494>Russian webnovel spaceThanks man, any recommendations?
>>25490087Claude Opus 5 on max settings is actually pretty thorough and explanatory, though it might get caught in a rhythm if you make it review too many chapters.
>>25490140Thank you for the advice. I would post a snippet but I'm trying to keep my authorial identity separate from 4chinz.I couldn't make it past chapter 1 of pale lights and I don't even remember why lol. I've read a lot of litrpg recently and I've come to really enjoy it, retarded and genuinely insane as the concept is and as mind numbingly terrible as most wns are. I started reading Nightside of the Long Sun by Wolfe today, after nothing but RR slop for a week or two, and it felt like I was being reborn back into the holy land of halfway decent prose and sane characters. Still, slop is fun. My story has a lot of litrpg baked in, the MCs subversion of it is basically his primary progression method, but to facilitate that a lot of the genre conventions get broken. Hence all the exposition in chapter 1. It takes the form of the MC and his sidekick, for lack of a better term, going through his post-transformation (long story that is gradually revealed) attributes which are all completely different from normal litrpg ones. Each one triggers some comments and banter about the sidekicks relationship and history with the mc so it's not worst case but it still feels icky to write. At least the last attribute description sort of blows up their system screen interface and breaks it temporarily.
>>25490528>Hence all the exposition in chapter 1Oof, please don't do it in chapter 1.You really need a real hook or two before dumping. Because the majority of all stories on RR is shit if you as an author can't create a hook on chapter 1 or before 3 depending on how long each chapter is then why should the reader have any faith that you can do so later or over the story?See this guys story for example>>25485146>>25485227>>25486176I've read even more after this and his quality really does go up after the initial hurdle mostly caused by litrpg dump, not even in chapter 1.
>>25490548Ahh I see, I'm explicitly trying to go after whatever readers are still really into litrpg mechanics and number go up.The structure of ch1 is:mc triggers something to transform his friend, we see that he can fuck with shit he shouldn't be able to -> autistic number increase porn as they look over what "powers" he got -> they fry their system thing and we get foreshadowing for the hook -> they go do something else and we meet a third character that I think is fun and interesting -> chapter ends with the hook, fulfilling the foreshadowing, which is something approximately like a nuclear explosion that sets the stage for the actual conflict of the story I agree straight litrpg mechanics shit can be exhausting but it's what I'm trying to do with this. My next project, if this one totally flops and I go down to one chapter a week on it, is not going to have any stat screens or grinding in it at all. Just a skill path system sort of like in skyrim that only gets described in prose. And it's a comedy story about a goblin finding Jesus and becoming an ecologist anyway.Either way thank you a lot for the advice.
>>25490257>nihilistic atheist edgelord right wing ramblingyou're supposed to find her silly, author's a japanese variety of communist
>>25490579Sounds decent enough maybe, extremely hard to say.Though as we're talking 700/3500 words of Ch1 I'll be a little sceptical if you can pull off good characterizations of the 3 chars, basic hopefully intriguing setting and the exposition. Usually you want a form of long and short hook. The short being what happens immediately next, usually why many stories start with some form of action and the longer can be a mystery or some form of potential like you're describing. You can imagine SAO episode 1 if you want, excellent hooks (especially if you're new to VR/litRPG) for a shit series.
>>25490507Don't have any for that particular topic: I don't like them. I just know they exist, and they keep rising to the tops in popularity. But if you're talking generally about Russian webnovels, then I have a few. There's this one: https://author.today/work/series/2076Called "Polary", and it's about a low-fantasy world, with politics, intrigue, big wars and strategy, with the magic being slowly introduced. Pretty good, a solid 8/10. Kind of gives you an ASoIaF vibe, but not as grimderp and low, with people shitting in bushes and so on. Then there's this one https://author.today/work/series/25525 It's called "to the Top", and it's about a master cultivator on a galaxy level who gets trapped as a spirit on a world that dampens everyone's cultivation. And so he has to posses some kid, so that he doesn't get destroyed, but he can't even do that correctly, and so he has to cooperate with the kid, give him advice, sometimes take over and do fights for him. Then they go on big adventures. And I guess there's a System on that planet, as well. Anyway, pretty decent, 7/10. But I have to warn you. Those jews, they put all their even barely successful works behind paywalls. So you can read a few chapters for free, but then, after an especially interesting cliffhanger, you will click "Next chapter", and it will tell you to insert coin. So you should use this website: https://searchfloor. org/Just copypaste the name of the book, or the author, and you can find it here absolutely for free. I'm sure your figure it out. As a bonus, pirating your content will let you get even closer to Russian culture.
>>25490548>>25490614Actually, I wrote >>25479029 (4 page story) if you want to review my actual writing. I genuinely fucking hate it and how it turned out, writing from the perspective of that kind of character or edgy shit (particularly anything sexual) is not something I'm going to do again. But I think my writing ability is ok, not "my immortal" tier at least.>Usually you want a form of long and short hook.Ahhh this is extremely useful, thank you. I have some elements of that already but I wasn't thinking in those terms.
>>25490621Really appreciate it anon>Those jews, they put all their even barely successful works behind paywallskek>>25490623>>Usually you want a form of long and short hook.I'll clarify of course that there is no particular rule or heuristic stating the this, but I find that most good stories has some variation of these elements while almost all bad ones lack them. A hook does not necessarily have to be a cliff-hanger either, overusing cliff-hangers is shooting yourself in the foot unless you can live up to the expectation.>review my actual writingThe writing itself is decent/servicable. That is, it is not in the way and it is enough. The story is to top heavy. Meaning the first page is too detailed and stale, this is pretty much how I see a bad chapter 1. The story starts and we get multiple paragraph of detail that I essentially want to tune out because I don't care for it, we have no story yet. If you merge/weave page 1-2 you can throw in most of the detail and both get the story and the detail. The staleness usually goes hand in hand with dumping, if you weave it in you usually change the same details to have more soul. The horror could even grow as we come to realize it, in contrast to the naïve character. The sudden "action" itself is unfortunately butchered. Commas as formatting. You're also more narrating it instead of having the character think/experience it so you're loosing immersion and skipping expected chock/fear or mental cursing. Is she just stoically taking getting stabbed and probably going to be killed? >And he's pretty jealous.kek wtf, that's some odd detail to add as it contributes nothing, and basically has no relevancy? At that point just remove the last 3 paragraphs before last.Last point is if we truly wanted to care about any of this we need to have a reason to care for the MC at all. If you twist it around and make her more likable or empathetic we actually do have a chance to care instead of gruff cyberpunk dystopia. For likeable it could be some witty banter or whatever. Why should we care, something attracted us. You could have an asshole likeable because he has "chad aura". Then we have a bit of soul.
>>25490760Thank you, this is EXTREMELY helpful. I have a hard time dissecting the particulars of my own writing.
>>25490791I become blind to my own writing in just 4chan posts. But many times I find that when reading or writing actual good prose you appreciate the particulars, the pacing and transitions between more. You skim/skip less of it and allow the shit to reveal itself in it's dissonance. If you hate it all, it's all discordant. If you walk away for a while and can't find the muse or soul while re-reading it probably a once over. Nobody wants to read boring filler.
>>25489837John Carter of Mars would like to have a word with you.
>>25490176I can't think of a single classic that doesn't go to the other world as soon as possible and always by the end of chapter 1.
>>25490897My point was that these outer/lit/ fags have disdain for web novel tropes but insert themselves into discussion about them and pretend they know what they are talking about.
>>25490908Just because one doesn't like Chinese web novels doesn't mean they are ignorant when it comes to web novels in general, especially the North American market, which indeed is more influenced by Japanese tropes then Chinese ones.
>>25488988The Eminence in Shadow basically does this. Establish MC is autistic/competent in real world with a minor story and is later isekai'd. The manga is the best format too check it out if you want a sense of someone doing it. I wouldn't really recommend stalling though.
western web novels really are not that inspired by Japanese mediahow are DCC, Primal Hunter, HWFWM, MOL anime inspired? they just aren't except in the vaguest sense
I need some more audiobook slop to rot my brain to at work. Just finished book 16 of pic related and i'd like something similar please. OP MC who is also selfish and doesn't do hero shit for the sake of it. Also the story needs to take itself at least a bit seriously (dropped HWFWM because of all the unrealistic "witty" quips the MC spat out despite being in a weird situation and in danger). Also a non-ear grating narrator please.
>>25490193Skill cores are less like pills and more like the dantian in xianxia novels. Each one is the condensed core of a living being, each has its own leveling system, and normally a person can't just hot swap one core for another without using a skill altar.Skill altars are naturally formed magical structures that allow a person to extract or imbue a skill core into themselves. Discovered altars are controlled by one faction or another, but most people can still access state or guild maintained altars as long as they cough up the cash.Because hot swapping isn't an option, people create different builds around how their skill cores synergize, like combining a wing skill with a hot air skill for a flight build, or even combining a self destruct skill with a second chance skill for a suicide bomber build, if they're crazy enough. As each skill has its own strengths and weaknesses, an F ranker with a single powerful LV5 skill can beat a B ranker who stupidly equipped five weak LV1 skills with zero synergy between them. Rank only determines how many skills a person can equip at once (1 for F, 2 for E, and so on), while the skills themselves are the actual superpowers.
Do any of you have any recommendations like Inquiry into Longevity (asking about longevity / Any other name this novel has) and unsheathed, in the sense that it is slow paced cultivation wise but they spend a lot of time doing adventures n shit?I'm up to date on the former from just going on the chinese site and reading it raw using google translate. (I really come to like how messy the story arcs go and how they resolve at the end)However I dropped unsheathed around chap 800 due to Chen ping'an being a nothing burger of a character.
>>25491093you read 800 chapters of a nothing burger character...?
>>25491098Every other character in the novel is interesting desu, and the author even writes about them pretty often. However later down the novel, like around chap 500, the author realized that through out the novel the MC didn't have any actual growth, so he focused on the MC and ended up giving him zero growth any ways. I kept on out of pure inertia until I wasn't even paying attention to what I was reading.
>>25490982After much thought and reworking my outline, I think I will start in the other world and do flashbacks. I can still continue writing the section I am doing in cronilogical order. Then the opening in the other world and edit the already written parts to fit.
how do I find webnovels with actually good fight scenes instead of oneshot and nodiffslop
>>25491148Eh, generally any novel that tries to go through 'weak to strong' phase has a period in which some fights are high/extreme diff but later devolve into cookie-cutter fights or are just glossed over. Some novels even go as far as just describing normal moves and just go about adding a bunch of adjectives that make them more powerful with the result just being a guy slapped/raped to death.Point being, in 'weak to strong' stories, it all comes back to nodiffslop which rules out like 99% of novels that try to make a heroes journey.unless you are reading a torture porn slop (for the reader) novel like Immortal Mortal.
>>25484888>reason some people hate Fmc?because women are inferior.
I'm tired of cookie cutter shit atm, any webnovels that try to go as far as possible in the other direction and be as original as possible with it's world? Some alien fever dream type shit.
>>25491327this thread barely knows popular stories why do you think it would know something that fundamentally needs to be unpopular by your own implicit definitiononly way you find something like that is slogging through the slop marshes yourself
>>25491377>>25491377>>25491377New thread
>>25491327I'd say that you have better luck reading short stories/one shot stories (Ask a librarian and don't be a fag about it) in order to find the "fever dream" /existential feel.Webnovel slop by design is meant to be milked for maximum chapter count and I doubt there are more than a handful of stories that do this and even less stories that properly capture the feel without it be dragging for a gorrillion chapters
>>25491093Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality
>>25491093>google translateC'mon man, at least use an AI
>>25491093Also, for recommendation, Quest for Immortality/immortality through Array Formations it's up to 1k chapters on fenrirrealm(better translation) and 1.5k on aberto patreon (also for free)
