It's not just the wholesale genocides and razing of cities and losing countless, priceless works of writing, it's the effect the invasions had on the Muslim mindset. Muslims prior to this firmly believed that the great success of their initial conquests that established the great Caliphate were proof that Islam was correct. They were able to roll over everybody because Allah willed it. What does that mean if the Mongols swept away entire Muslim kingdoms, and snuffed out the lives of millions of faithful Muslim worshipers? Did Allah will that, as well? It caused a massive crisis of faith within Islam. It might've been a cause for reform, to force Islamic thought to evolve past the circular reasoning of "we won every war because Islam is correct, and Islam is correct because we won every war". There were a few such scholars who attempted to pry Islam away from this mindset, but unfortunately, they lost out to the fanatical traditionalists, who insisted the reason this happened is that Islam wasn't repressive and violent enough. That Allah was punishing them for corrupting the true teachings of the prophet, and the only way to go forward again was to go backward, to a more fundamental, essential form of Islam. And Islamic culture has literally never recovered from this.
