Japan's reading habits are very odd. Long novels get published in Japan as light novels, so Lord of the Rings is 9 books over there.

They’re clearly capable of passion with their media and a handful of very specific cultural things, or if some popular media happens to deal with something like the Sengoku Jidai the people who engage with that will be passionate about it, but only connected with the media. But pull the general educated person off the street and their ignorance will be astounding, it’s like they live in some sort of eternal amnesiac present. Americans will at least pay lip service to Washington and Lincoln. In comparison too I find history to be so much more alive with the Chinese, which is all the more astounding considering the Cultural Revolution tried to wipe all of that off the map. But honestly maybe being unburdened by history is just the payoff for having an “orderly” society
