The Princeton Science Library (plus Indiana University for some reason) has a bunch of very good books on stuff like this, as well as other topics like microbes, Mass Extinctions, and the Natural Histories of the Permian, Western Interior Seaway, etc.. That book, called Oceans of Kansas, is a genuine masterpiece in my (ever humble) opinion.
