>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

Wanted to write a plot for my story with a positive argument towards religious houses, just for a change from these "religion house bad, actually" stories that I've seen every now and then, but I'm drawing a blank on how to begin to do that. Can I get some insight on how to make the most of such a premise?

I have a rough idea, but I'm not sure if its enough:
>Peaceful bumfuck nowhere region where people live in constant apathy is barely held together sanity-wise by local religious house offering blessings and teaching from an ancient benevolent goddess. Said blessings also ward off malicious otherworldly creatures.
>Everyone loves said religious house and is considered a high authority among the people.
>Guild of knights, the ones actually in charge, fear that the religious house may steal their influence in the land, so they hire a group of mercenaries to threaten the peaceful lifestyle of the land.
>The religious house is not equip to fight so they get cornered and cannot offer their service. Evil creatures start popping up as a result, making life even worse.
>Knights spread a story about "Religious house doesn't care about you, actually, but WE do!"
>Peaceful land becomes hell on earth due to mercenaries and cosmic horrors running about, so they believe the knights and alienate against the religious house.
>The knights double down by blaming every blight of the land to the religious house as some kind of mastermind working under the shadows.
>The monkey wrench in this whole plan is a single acolyte that was exiled prior to shit going south that is actually capable of fighting back, bringing hope to wherever she goes.

the best fiction is based on real life
first go read up about how monasteries preserved Western knowledge in the medieval era, and their contributions to society
if you want something really relevant and scholarly, go read up on how the church helped develop the notions of chivalry into the modern international humanitarian laws of war, and eventually human rights
then write your story around that
>>
>>25492239
>Peaceful bumfuck nowhere region where people live in constant apathy is barely held together sanity-wise by local religious house offering blessings and teaching from an ancient benevolent goddess.

Sounds like pretty much like a cult (Cults aren't inherently bad, they just have to follow an unorthodox teachings/god).

You already have the setting right, superstitious knights/hillbillies can create conflict with their local religion based on whose authority is more enforceable/present.

Take advice from this anon and take inspiration from real life small religions/cults >>25492249

I've finally started posting the story I've been working on. It's a hard magic urban fantasy story about the first person to successfully return from the dead trying to discover who murdered him in the first place. The story is set in the 21st century shortly after the return of magic to the world, an event to which civilization has not been responding well. The story can be read on Sufficient Velocity here:

sufficientvelocity.com/threads/dead-hand.158444/

I would have used Spacebattles, but their TOS is a bit restrictive. It will be going up on Royal Road soon as well.

>>
>>25492239
Kinda cool, but rather than limiting the scope to bumfuck nowhere, you should go all the way and build the whole world around the concept.

A fantasy world is protected by a benevolent god from the forces of evil. However, this god cannot directly influence the world. He can only grant holy magic to the faithful so they may fight in his stead.
The demons, knowing they can't win against God's army in direct combat, hatched a century spanning plan to subvert the religion. They spread their influence into every institution, convincing people that ACTUALLY religion is bad and evil is good, and that people should get to do whatever they want without fear of dogmatic judgement.
They succeed, of course, and the church is driven to near extinction. Society falls into corruption, with demons in disguise holding the highest positions of power, feasting on any soul they wish.
God, with his dwindling powers, decides to make a final gambit by channeling his power into a single acolyte to liberate the world from evil (a messiah, if you will).
This acolyte now has a god given quest to save the world, armed with a Faith System that rewards him or her with power the more faith he/she can inspire in the people.
Whether you want to play the concept straight or make this a misunderstanding comedy by having the MC be a two faced liar, Tanya style, is up to you.

I already have set up the basis of the worldbuilding beyond the bumbfuck nowhere region (dubbed in writing as "The Standstill"), as well the two opposing forces (which are more along the lines of cosmic wonders and horrors humanity gave religious names to)... but I can take some from what you wrote alright. The idea of evil spreading influence to downplay its opposition was a given, but reading your piece made me realize it shouldn't limit itself to just evil influencing, but also human's common sense (or lack thereof), like someone making an argument that "evil force exists because good force stirs it in their fighting, if you rid of good force, you rid of evil force."
>>25492380
>The setting as written is too simple which is making at least me just imagine extremely simplistic ideas or extremes probably easily solved by only the MC.
It's more of the former, I didn't go into detail on everything for the sake of not making a wall of text, but believe me when I say there's nuance to everything, or at least that is the plan...
That said, you've put a lot of things into perspective so I can patch things as I go, so thank you.
>How does she do it? Her very presence & virtue itself? The Gary Stu version being the MC being the absolute strongest fighter.
If you want specifics on the MC, I can elaborate a bit. Her journey to being a ray of hope across the land only happens because she is the sole person that does something about things for a time; as those that can fight are either perpetuating the problem or having their hands and feet tied. She is not even the strongest or the most efficient at her capabilities either, she does go through a lot of meaningful mishaps, failures and barely makes it out alive most of the time. She is regarded as a "savior" of sorts solely because there is no one else doing what she is doing.
...But like I said, you've also gave me some perspective, so I can definitely work something out to get things on a different direction, like not making MC's journey a solo one, or give more nuance to everything, like the oppositions to make them less of the same.

All very helpful, thank you again. I'll try another smaller story and post it in a couple days. I really hate that story. That's part of why I posted it: I couldn't tell exactly what made it bad.

>dialogue is quite puerile
This was intentional at first: It was supposed to be retarded and exaggerated to to the point of being funny. Then halfway through I realized it wasn't working and just sprinted through the rest.

>No character there is really living "a life of their own", worth seeing, or something that would be interesting to the reader.
Yes, my biggest weakness. Depicting it at least, I have very detailed, vivid background in my head (I've gotten compliments on the characters for some stream of consciousness introspective stuff I did, so I don't think I'm totally delusional) I'm just not sure how to "slice" it into words and character-experience woven with narration.

The feeling of writing webnovels with the full knowledge that you must retardproof your prose and jingle the keys for the readercattle

Despite the fact your prose is already pretty simple by your own view, and yet still somehow requires retardproofing further

Me again, I took the time on reading on chivalry and Christianity's contributions to the concept back in the middle ages and it did give me an idea to make something out of it, also picking up on what anon here >>25492380 mentioned.
Rather than making a guild of knights that is malicious right from the get-go, I believe it would make for a more interesting narrative to have the knights, fearing for their glory and influence over the people being taken away from, to resort to shady methods to make a point for themselves such as virtually threatening civilians using a proxy and robbing them from their warding services from the religious house in an attempt to frame the competition... only for those methods to backfire, resulting in the knights losing the plot of themselves as they damage control one problem after another, ultimately seeking dominance for the sake of it and regardless of the cost and their prior ideals. That would also give me an excuse for an internal conflict between them and have an protagonist out of them.

That would be in a step in the right direction, no?
>>
>>25492941
note: somehow this is the only way for a young white male author to have a chance at real success and is in fact the best option by far
>>
>>25492941
Clarity is all that's required. You write in a way that can be easily followed and there's plenty of room to branch out. Throw in the occasional five dollar word, and if you're doing it right, people will be able to understand what it means from context. And if someone still complains, your other non-retarded readers will drag them for it. Bam, everyone wins.

>religion history and their contributions over the years
Western law as you know it is virtually founded on the bones of Christianity
it's very educational as a study of ethics, comparative religion, law, AND literature to study the differences in religions and how laws differ

for example, the legal and religious view on prostitution
Christianity regards it as a moral sin, therefore most Western nations banned it, and even when legalised it is hidden
Buddhism and Shinto does not, therefore in Japan it was usually legal, and even today although officially banned, the ban is more or less not enforced
Modern atheism, which combines Aleister Crowley's credo, "Do as thou wilt..." with modern Wicca's rider "...if you harm none", favours or even takes pride in prostitution under the principle of "willing buyer, willing seller", which is the reason why those Western countries which legalise prostitution have done so
and under Islam, prostitution is forbidden but man is amply provided with, to borrow an ASOIAF phrase, rock wives, but also salt wives that he can take from slaves if he is too poor to take a rock wife (An-Nisa 25). which is the position used by the likes of ISIS and Hamas to justify what they do.

shitposting aside, I won't dictate which ethical stance you ought to take, you can evaluate them and see for yourself, all I'm saying is you *should* perform said evaluation before jumping in with tropes

>she is the sole person that does something
even ASOIAF, otherwise a famously bleak story, gives each pretender a coterie of well-meaning allies

>>25492946
>have the knights, fearing for their glory and influence over the people being taken away from
you can if you like
I myself am writing a story in which there are clear villains as well, because such is reality

but having nuanced secondary enemies marks a more mature plot, and a more mature view of the world. for example, people who are intelligent and/or powerful who just have a tiny piece of naivete that people will do the right thing and not abuse the huge amount of power he's going to give them
James Holden in Leviathan Wakes is a great example.

He didn't say copyright, he said writing shit that is illegal in Russia. While it would be an easy step for them to prevent such an attack, by adding another step to their AI flow that checks that whatever they translated isn't illegal where they publish it; they probably don't have it as of now. I'm not sure if being pro-Ukraine or criticizing the government is actually illegal there, don't think they got to thay point yet, but I know a few things that are.
There's "promoting suicide", so if you have your isekai MC go "wow, so glad I died, my life was so shit, and now I'm in this amazing magical world, people back on Earth should definitely kill themselves", it would make it illegal back there, just like the anon wanted. Have the protagonist fall on hard times and get helped by the church, bonus points if you if you throw red hearings to lad the reader into believing you are doing the religion bad actually.

For example.
>Protagonist is a struggling adventurer
>He is prejudiced against the church for some reason but in an act of desperation goes to it for help.
>The church is an ancient institution, it's still powerful and prevalent but fading for some reason.
>The priest recognizes his talents and offers him a job as a church-sanctioned adventurer/demon hunter.
>Over the course of the story he and a party of fellow hunters go on adventures slowly peeling back a conspiracy by dark forces is behind the fading of the church.

Of course don't make the church all morally spotless and infallible or you'll come across as preachy. Just in general avoid preaching nobody likes that. And try to make the faith unique not just Christianity with the serial number rubbed off. Research what actually constitutes a religion (Philosophy/Theology/Myths/Rituals etc) and try to craft a believable one or your story will fall apart.

That is simply how some of this stuff goes.

You could try and post across multiple websites and forums, post ads, beg on discords, or bot in hopes to hit the trending/rising star on RR-like websites to cultivate an audience or you can accept that this is simply a hobby and be happy writing slop.

Keep in mind that some ideas are simply too niche to ever snowball into super large audiences, which is why AO3 exists

I got motivated enough to finish a Chapter 1 for my story! That said, it's only 2.3k words long and it doesn't tell everything it needs to know for the story, I'll tell the main premises in tidbits with each entry, cause otherwise I'm never finishing "Chapter 1." Would this be a good approach? I figured I could do something like this based on some of the WNs I've read.

I also don't feel confident on sharing it yet because I feel seasoned anons will skin my ass ass for such an awful writing... but eventually I might share it, when I clean this up into a more presentable, I haven't even proofread it yet.

>>
>>25494990
its only needed if you don't already know it and are the delusional overconfident sort
otherwise it's a motivation killer with no upside. I honestly just recommend not posting your work for like 300k words till you have the basics somewhat understood
>>
>>25494978
>seasoned anons will skin my ass
They will, but mostly because they're cynical, opinionated, and jobless. It's actually great practice to learn to pierce through the sort of criticism that works for you vs the kind that doesn't.
>>
>>25495001
IDK, every learning process I've been through has always benefitted from external feedback loops.
>>
>>25494990
I don't deny that, don't get me wrong, I just don't feel prepared to be thrown into the meat grinder just yet. I'd like to polish myself a bit on my own and then get told my writing shit knowing I put everything I could do on it; that way critiques can come out more accurately too. And now that you mention it, I do find strange I personally feel more willing to be throw into the meat grinder on writing as opposed to my main niche and the one I'm generally more successful at (keyword, "successful", not "good"), which is drawing.
>>25495003

>It's actually great practice to learn to pierce through the sort of criticism that works for you vs the kind that doesn't.
Hearing that gives me a bit of relief, knowing at least some people consider dismissing some criticism as a sane practice. I do struggle a lot with that, trying to take everything I'm told into account, even if it strays from my own visions or leads to contradictions, so being told "some criticism may not be compatible" eases the process of analyzing them a bit.
>>
>>25494821
>record scratch
No
>>
>>25495009
everyone is different, but I've seen great success by keeping my improvement process grounded and internal. the outside noise fucks with my head. I don't need other people telling me what I did wrong when its almost always obvious
now that I'm a big name and I get a lot of comments I honestly think most feedback is god awful and actively harmful. don't listen to comments they aren't intelligent and invested enough. MAYBE listen to overall trends but not even then, you'll see people complain about cliffhangers in huge quantities but that shit works and it means theyre engaged. Just as 1 example
but there is no single right way to approach creativity and improvement
if you really want feedback get it from a writing group you trust, I guess. i didn't though, I just used common sense and wrote and read a lot
>>
>>25495011
it's imperative you learn that a most criticism can actually be boiled down to "it's not my preference so it's wrong." Anons usually have practice masking this because we're used to voicing our opinions on the internet and presenting them more grandiosely than others. Your average webnovel comment will be more akin to "What!!!! What do you mean [Character] did this and not what I would have done?! Bad writing!!!!"
>>
>>25495023
Ahh I see. I'm still starting out and any feedback I get helps me a lot. Both in finding actual issues I'm somewhat blind to and in developing the sense >>25495003 mentioned. It helps me understand what people like and why, even if what they're directly saying is totally retarded. Congratulations on the success btw.
>>
>>25495094

Genuinely annoys me in progression stories when they make the protagonist start aged like 11 and then quickly make them able to beat up adults.
Like what was the point, we're stuck with the kid unless you timeskip but they're not held back by their age in any meaningful way.
>>
>>25495053
This.
A good cliffhanger is great. But if every chapter is a cliffhanger, or worse, if the characters just got a huge win and suddenly there's a twist and the rug gets pulled from under them and it's left as a cliffhanger, you feel cheated.
>>
so in webnovels how are plots usually resolved? since it seems like the end is never in sight, the main baddie is never defeated, that sort of thing
>>
>>25495209
For the ones that are competent this is like asking how plots are resolved in soap operas.
You resolve a plot and keep moving, the characters are the draw. Ofc this involves planning or at least thinking ahead.
Alternatively you chinese it and ascend realms/tower levels (bad ones do this to avoid writing characters)
>>
>>25495209
depends on the story. There is usually a vague end-goal, just not one achievable in the near future. Instead it tends to go through arcs kinda like shonen. The story tackles smaller problems and if it's competently written they're usually woven together in a not too jarring way and foreshadowed from way before.
>>
>>25495166
>but they're not held back by their age in any meaningful way
Children have significantly less social capital than adults. Which is why you'll often see characters like that get an older cut out to drag along with them.

Contrary to what shitty writers would have you believe, being the best at killing shit is generally not the most useful skill in any particular setting.

Also, 11-year olds can't engage in romantic or sexual relationships in most settings either for ethical, legal, developmental, or practical reasons (e.g. even if the character in question is a 40-year old man inside, if all their potential partners are 11-year olds with no grasp of sex or romance, that doesn't help them).
>>
>>25495209
>so in webnovels how are plots usually resolved?
the... same way plots are resolved in a normal book?? make the end in sight? make the main baddie get defeated? ther ya go
>>
>>25495209
A lot of web novels don't actually have a main baddie and the ones that do often have them just be a looming presence that isn't really dealt with until the final arc with maybe some brief appearances before then with arcs before then centered on minions and allies to the big bad, opportunists, or random other threats.

It's actually fairly rare to get a persistent villain with effectively their own B plot through the entire story in web novels unless they're political/military dramas or stories about chasing down a roving villain or lower stakes works where a villain can't actually be "dealt with" permanently because laws are a thing so plots are generally about foiling their individual endeavors.

And honestly this makes perfect sense. You either figure out how to deal with or avoid things making your life shittier. Being unable to do either either requires gross incompetence or very specific circumstances.

>>
>>25495250
>A lot of web novels don't actually have a main baddie and the ones that do often have them just be a looming presence that isn't really dealt with until the final arc
Because if there's a big baddie who makes an appearance and the MC doesn't instantly slaughter him, winnie readers will go apeshit over how the protagonist is a lame, incompetent loser and story is disappointing
>>
>>25495583
>gotta admit, I generally do not read or watch episodic stuff
Be careful when using "episodic". For most media "episodic" means it is a serial narrative, but for TV in particular, episodic usually means the series *isn't* a serialized, thus making episodic a contranym.

What you said isn't really clear here.
>>
>>25495586
You've got that backwards. If there's a big baddie who makes an appearance and they don't instantly slaughter the MC, winnie readers will go apeshit over how they're weak and/or incompetent and therefore the MC is even worse by comparison for not being able to deal with them.

>>
>>25495619
Isn't that normal even in shounenshit? The rival is always stronger than the protagonist, often the protag isn't even on his radar except as a persistent irritation. And the main antagonist is so strong that he makes the rival look almost pathetic right up to the point where they defeat him, possibly together, with either the power of friendship or a training montage.

Naruto is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive shipping faggotry and DARKNESS. The normal anon can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.

However, these very aspects that try to smear over the shit of its core make it a breeding ground for aspie, unsociable underageb& faggots who engage in every kind of faggotry both online and in the real world. The superpowered characters all trying their hardest to look cool, the jutsus, peculiar, colorful clothes, the whole ninja faggotry and everything about the Naruto world fuels their escapist fantasies, while the pity-party character backgrounds, emphasis on revenge, and overall preachiness of the series make it fit just right with the mary-sueish drives of your average preteen and his sense of unwarranted self-importance towards the world. Exactly the kind of shit that makes little kiddies and underageb& retards eat this shit right the fuck up.

Naruto is basically THE series to attract the most hated anime fanbase known to /a/, which is why, regardless of individual opinions, it is the responsibility of every anon to troll the fuck out of this show and everyone who likes it, and ensure that no Naruto threads ever encourage the newfriends to show their faces here.

After like three months of scraping with no backlog of chapters, I finally worked my way back up to a two week buffer without missing a single scheduled upload.
It feels hollow. I struggled and straight up didn't have fun trying to juggle IRL and serialization for so long, and all it took to fix was like three weeks of being left the fuck alone. I was going to try and do more IRL things too and now I'm thinking I just don't have the capacity to do everything I want in life. My own mortality is grabbing my face with both hands and making me look it in the eyes.

I despise RI but even I can tell you that this has already been thought over time and time again
Why do you think xianxia focuses so heavily on personal power? To be immortal and free you must be not only ageless but also so powerful and resilient that nothing can kill you or stop you from living as you wish.
>>
>>25495441
>So why include the part about being a kid at all, retard?
You're either complaining that a character is shown facing adversity or complaining that a character isn't romantically/sexually active.

Not sure which, but either way, you're fucking stupid.

Writers show characters as kids because they want to show the character as a kid, because they want to show the character's growth over time, because they want to show the character exploring their place in the world as a child, because they want to explore the character's interpersonal relationships as a child, because they want the character to be underestimated, or any others of an infinite host of valid reasons. Also, to establish the childhood friend character that they'll eventually fuck.
>>
>>25496111
What benefits are you offering?
>>
>>25496111
>No choice would be meaningful, because all could be deferred
>Getting up to go to the bathroom isn't meaningful because you can just shit yourself later
A person being immortal doesn't mean they don't change, doesn't mean the world doesn't change, and most importantly doesn't mean opportunities can't be missed.
>>
>>25496171
>to establish the childhood friend character that they'll eventually fuck.
I will drop any story that has this.

The reasons you listed are mostly irrelevant when the character is actually a 1000 year old soul from another world transported to a new body. This is just an advanced body possesion, the 100 chapters of retarded slice of life and drama shit are not necessary.

I already did, and I still fell behind. Didn't even finish editing manuscripts for publication like I intended to, either. Now that I'm back in my groove I think I can start working on them again but it's incredibly frustrating that I don't have more energy and focus than I do (even with abusing caffeine).

It's all the more painful because I know once I just do it, the books will be done forever and I can put them behind me. But it's a hill I just can't seem to get over, even though I feel like I should.

I'm definitely planning a hiatus for after this arc wraps up, though. It'll have a very satisfying conclusion for 90% of the plot threads I've created and I'll have a good twist and some dangling threads to keep readers interested without torturing them with too much of a cliff, so I'll have time to really polish the next arc's outline and maybe even work on a shorter unrelated fiction.

Just gotta keep grinding...
>>
>>25494821
The issue is that 99% of stories on RR have a similar starting structure, so you want to go through the motions ASAP until people start caring about your character. Only once you give a shit does flashback or backstory make sense. Reading a droll or even action-packed scene about someone you haven't yet 'met' is boring.
>>
>>25496336
The issue is that 99% of authors on RR can't write.

I want some creative opinions here. I'm working on the ending chapters of my current WN. The MC is about to trek into a big-ass evil rape dungeon to reach the BBEG to stop a big-ass ritual. At the same time, some major side characters (Who have all had their own POV chapters that readers ostensibly liked, one became a frequent commenter's favorite character) will be following behind to deal with some secondary villains in a separate part of the dungeon.

Well over 85% of the story, however, has been entirely from the first person perspective of the lead. It is largely done in a character study context and really getting into his head.

Do you think a chapter should be dedicated to specifically what the side characters are doing as an alt-POV since it'd also give some last bits of characterization to the secondary villains, or should the final ~5-6 chapters be entirely focused on the MC since it's the end of his story? I'm leaning towards the latter but I don't know if it's really be a bother for people to not get any solace on the former. Worst case I might make it a Patreon-exclusive extra chapter. But some second opinions would be nice.
>>
>>25496813
Name of the WN?

>>

>Patreon-exclusive extra chapter
No, god, if it's as important as what you're making it out to be. Maybe make it patreon-early, but not exclusive.
It could be pretty jarring to get a new POV so late into the story, so having the extra chapter on the side is probably not a bad idea.
>>
>>25496844
My Patreon is free, to be clear (Waiting until the story is over to put an epub for sale on it), but yeah you're right. The last alt-POV from any of those side characters was a few weeks ago.

I can't do Patreon-early unfortunately because I am Pants-ing hard after getting sick killed my buffer.

And the thing is I don't know how important it'd actually be. I feel like right now it's a case of just... do the chapters focused on the MC, get to the end, and if people want a chapter on the alt-POV I can write up one afterwards since I'll be taking a break anyway and I can dedicate a lot more time to something interesting there.
>>
>>25496853
Like to be clear on why I don't know how important I think it'd really be for the reader: I've done it multiple times before where I've made it known shit is always happening outside of the MC or the reader's perspective. It's not necessarily abnormal for anything like that to also happen "offscreen." Especially since there's a lot the MC is going to be doing.
>>
>>25496853
>>25496858
In this case, just go ahead with your MC. If even you don't know how important it'll be then it's probably not going to have any load-bearing plotpoints in it.

I appreciate the advice but I'm also on a pretty severe diet at the moment, and that is in fact having a significant impact on my energy and mood. So your instinct is spot on but the advice is inactionable until I hit my target. I'm really attached to both writing and weightloss at the moment and caffeine is helping both, at the cost of stress and sleep, but it's a sacrifice I'm making consciously.
Just gotta keep grinding... Thankfully I've got the next two full months blocked off on my calendar so I SHOULD be unbothered for some time.

My patreon has been slowly and steadily falling off, especially the last two months, which is quite annoying. I need to self-promote more and write better so people get interested in what's going on. I'm hoping the climax I write between now and the end of the year is what does it and I can recover patrons.

As an anon who's similarly been grinding every single day for over 120 days now, I can tell you I was doing it while eating exclusively at BMR for about 90 of those days and those were some of the most agonizing days of my life. Dieting hard results in a stress reaction that makes creative thinking harder because your brain is prioritizing finding food.

Enjoy giving like $500 to some gobshite who underdelivers weeks after due.
People don't use AI covers because readers demand it, they use them because it allows them to quickly iterate and create a cover that fits their mental image of what they want without being dicked around by some BDP furry who is too busy jorkin it to actually complete the commission they've been paid for.
>>
>>25497881
A commissioned cover is fine, although you have to keep an eye out for scammers and overchargers. Don't pay more than $200 at most $300 for a cover.

In most cases an AI cover is used and then if the book makes a profit that money is used to commission a cover

Pisces was lobotomized so he could help Erin and Ryoko (or whatever her name was again). If Pisces was as powerful, multi-talented, and useful as he was presented in the books. Idk, but it wouldn't surprise me at this point.

Wandering Inn just adds so much bullshit that I wanna get to the main part of Erin just being a goddamn inn-keeper instead of all of this side-fuckery.
Ryoko is fucking unbearable to read about.
Erin has layers of plot armor, and she should of gotten fucked harder for all her mistakes of being a dumb cunt by trying to be a self-righteous peace keeper. The goblins should of ruined her, and the swarms of monsters surrounding the area around her inn too. Also, despite so many people holding her hand constantly, and giving her so much assistance. Erin doesn't have to pay for her fuck ups, other than paying the price of one of her friend's dying for her because she wanted to play peace keeper with a fucking rapist warband of goblins, because one of them could play chess.
It's fucking insane on any logical point.
Then how shit Erin treats all the people who have supported her too. Especially shitting on the men who helped (and died for her), and praising the women and then making passing comments about "le racism of inter-species, and humans are le worst and le biggest racists" despite ever other specie having their own prejudice against every other group.
Idk why it's so fucking popular.

The takes from that poster are either made with bad faith, bad memories, or second-hand understanding of the story.
There's a variety of characters from both genders, and the only male 'knucklehead' is Relc. Yes, the story has competent women, but you also have competent men aplenty.
The complain about pisces is nonsensical. Not only is he a broke criminal who has gone around stealing, he's a necromancer--and due to recent history, his class is reviled in the entire continent. "He could hide it-" he's being actively chased for crimes beyond just his class which is why he stays the fuck away from civilization for the most part.
Erin absolutely has to pay for her mistakes. Not only a friend of hers dies, she gets injured and alienates a lot of people and eventually she literally has to pay.
Ryoka is insufferable, that much is true. God forbid a character has flaws and is set for growth (I love V1 Ryoka btw, she's my kind of insufferable).
Also, anon completely misunderstanding why Erin protects goblin lives. "Because one can play chess" no, motherfucker, it's because they're people. Erin hates killing and death even in self-defense, even in the later volumes when she's become a butcher herself. She's willing to do it, but she doesn't like it.
Also
>Erin has plot armor
Motherfucker she's the main character, do you want her to die in the first book or what. I'm sure he also complains about the plot armor of whatever powercreep dungeonslop he reads elsewhere too!

>Ryoka is insufferable, that much is true. God forbid a character has flaws and is set for growth
Not saying having flaws is bad, but holy shit, I cannot stand Ryoka in almost any of her current plot roster. Since, kind of like Erin, she just shits on everyone who's helped her.
Then putting this into a detached perspective of any other person being in this similar situation would be far more appreciative and cautious of being in a new world. And then not much is explored about "why" Ryoka acts the way she does other than what I can vaguely remember, is Ryoka moving around to new schools and having to make new friends constantly? It went by so fast and so lightly touched upon.
But just the way Erin and Ryoka treats certain people who have helped them immensely just kinda irks me, but maybe I'm asking too much of a isekai-like WN, but some of the writing just floors me. But I wasn't fulling expecting Wandering Inn to be hard-lining for an iskeai-like.
>Motherfucker she's the main character, do you want her to die in the first book or what.
No, but it seems the only real consequence so far Erin has had to endure is losing Relc and Klbkch and then moaning about Klbkch and not doing much about him other than trying to teach some of the other Antinium how to play chess.
>I'm sure he also complains about the plot armor of whatever powercreep dungeonslop he reads elsewhere too!
Maybe I wasn't expecting Wandering Inn to be something other than a "powercreep isekai", despite the "leveling" system concept early on.
Early on, I enjoyed seeing Erin have some sense of struggle, like the fishing, solving the flies issue, and trying to survive in a world she knows almost nothing about.
Even then, I still feel Erin got off kind of easy for the goblin fiasco, and for getting Klbkch killed (to save up to this point the only sympathetic-like goblin there is, unless more is revealed later on), and then potentially destabilizing the entire region because of the Antinium.
But again, maybe I'm not in the right mindset. That this is indeed a powercreep isekai-like, because I was expecting maybe something more like a portal-fantasy.
>>
>>25497811
>500-1000

>>
>>25497985
>any other person being in this similar situation would be far more appreciative and cautious of being in a new world.
Motherfucker Ryoka is THE most paranoid Earther save perhaps The Singer of Terandria, the entire REASON she had to go to Pisces to get her leg fixed is she wasn't willing to spill out any fucking secrets for a favor from the wealthiest lady of the land. We never get a full exploration of her pre-isekai past, just hints but that goes for most Earthers. It's still enough to get where she's coming from (her dad is a wealthy politician and her mom a socialite, both neglected her and she hates everyone as a result)
>the only real consequence so far Erin has had to endure is losing Relc and Klbkch
You mean, getting one of her first friends killed, and the other one blaming her for it and not speaking to her? How the hell that counts as "no consequences" to you is wild. Do you want Relc to just kill her?
>That this is indeed a powercreep isekai-like
It's way closer to a classic fantasy story than powercreep. Erin is practically defenseless until around V7, relying on her connections as an Innkeeper when it comes to danger.
TWI is a story about a bunch of kids who find themselves lost in a new world, and it's pretty fucking grim. Some got lucky, others died on spawn. Ryoka leans towards luckier, having appeared in a city and getting a job quickly. Erin is midway, spawning in hte wild and getting attacked but living and meeting people soon-ish. Others, which you get to meet later, spawned in the middle of warzones or worse. TWI is very much NOT about the numbers, but about the people--and the numbers reflec that, not the other way around.

Also: You somehow getting that only Rags is a person because she plays chess is fucking retarded. They're sapient creatures, you doofus. They're just uneducated and have a fucked up society because they're considered monsters by the rest of the world. The fact that they can level should tell you all you need to know about where their storyline is going.
>>
>where their storyline is going
It's been almost five years since I read The Wandering Inn (is it still on the author's website?), and reading your comments made me understand why being a completed story helped MoL become so popular...
>>
>>25498023
>You mean, getting one of her first friends killed, and the other one blaming her for it and not speaking to her? How the hell that counts as "no consequences" to you is wild. Do you want Relc to just kill her?
I expected deeper introspection about her actions early on and parlaying and trying to be a peace-keeper in a world she doesn't fully understand, and that trying to appease everyone has deeper consequences. Like fully trying to treat the goblins like people, despite the fact they would of raped her at the drop of the hat if she hadn't pulled a hail hary and defeated the war boss. Since TWI leans in some directions, towards mainstream fantasy tropes and elements, like goblins being violent, tribal rapists, drakes, gnolls, etc.
I am not unfamiliar with the idea of classical fantasy monsters just being misunderstood, but in a good chunk of iterations, goblins are usually the throw-aways before WoW (and DnD in some sense) popularized them as a playable/interactable misunderstood race.
Though, I expected Erin to be far more withdrawn, and people far less willing to interact with her, including her drake and gnoll friends. But I'm probably asking too much of a surface level fantasy trope world. Intuiting that there are more regional consequences to destabilizing the relationship of the Antinium and the city-state by having the damn liaison Klbkch being killed by a relative nobody out in the boonies.
>>25498026
>You somehow getting that only Rags is a person because she plays chess is fucking retarded. They're sapient creatures, you doofus.
Idk, I find it hard to swallow, because gnolls, drakes, and bug-men and other humanoids are accepted, but somehow goblins are still considered by all the other humanoid groups to unintelligent and violent and treated as such for a reason? Since there are implications from the world building, that lead people to that conclusion that the goblins are indeed just violent rapists. And that the Socks or whatever name is, is special since she can play chess, same with the Antinium, since chess is used as an intelligence marker apparently thus far into the story.

I caught up last year, and since I let chapters accumulate before catching up to not fall on the trap of assuming the worst is gonna happen every time a cliffhanger leaves me doubting (still happens but I've learned to trust the process).
I'd suggest going back to reading. The difference in quality from V7 onwards is unreal, I don't know what Pirateaba ate but the writing, characters, worldbuilding and general storytelling got insanely better.
>>
>>25498072
I honestly play it for jokes, maybe there will be an exploration of the mindset of pedos in the later chapters, but that detail is meant to serve as a parody to the "first they came" poem.

Always did names. I kept it to 1-2 words matching the vibe or being an exact phrase in the chapter, then when an arc came around that was simply too ridiculous for such simple repartee I gave it a much longer title explaining how ridiculous it is (Not saying what it is to avoid advertising but it's something like "This Arc Is About Clowns Eating Each Other, Part 1" and I got a pretty substantial view bump from it.

You guys gotta stop cold DMing rando artists you don't know on DeviantArt or Discord. VGen and Skeb have clear vetting systems that prevent artists from carpet-pulling you by making everything transparent and managed by a third party. Also pay attention to things like region and such. A cover, with commercial rights, should cover about a month's rent in the artist's country. If they seem a bit stingy, throw in the monthly cost of groceries in their country.

A 1-bedroom apartment in Indonesia (Full of great artists who speak clear English) can cost as low as $150 a month. A month's worth of groceries for one adult is $100.

That means you should be able to get a cover with commercial rights from a competent Indonesian artist for about $250.

If you're going to not bother with VGen or Skeb, then you need to have interacted with and vetted the art's work beforehand. You should have been on friendly terms first so that they're less likely to see you as a mark.

This is actually super normal in tradpub. and particularly large artists. Hell, not even just tradpub books. I once spoke with a comic artist (Not a small one, his covers make headlines in the comics sphere often) to get an approximate quote on what he would do for a cover and it was about $8500. And that's not even getting into 5 digit quotes for guys like Alex Ross.

When you are paying for an artist to work on something for you, you are paying to subsidize their life so that they can focus it on your work. If you hire an artist whose life is cheaper, you can subsidize it for a far lower amount. You're competing with them working a normal wagie job to meet rent and not have to deal with guys lowballing them or offering to pay them in exposure.

Wandering Inn is so bad, I wonder how it got such a big readership. I slogged through volume 1 and can never tell if the big community behind it is just a meme or real. Literal slop, I think AI generation could do better.

You're saying that as if AI isn't a liability when a chunk of people out there associate AI generation with low effort works. If anything you're more at risk of being judged by the cover with AI than when hiring an artist. I, for one, if I see an AI cover for a book, I will immediately assume the rest of it is written with AI.

The people who complain about AI covers are a very loud VERY SMALL minority
I mean, use common sense. Like 45 out of 50 Rising Star covers are AI, the readers clearly don't give a shit.

Honestly, they probably prefer AI.
>>
>>25498822
Not speaking for the people that complain, or even people that read on a regular. I'm speaking for the people I know and have seen AI image generation close by. There is a clear disconnection happening on people when they see AI generation being used, which is why is associated with lack of effort, specially on creative projects, not just books, but design, arts and even videogames as well.
Of course there are people who cannot tell nor care, but to say the amount of people that do see AI and feel repeled by it is "very small" is not accurate either.

That said, it is weird hearing a group that is adjacent to arts and crafts such as writing speaking positively about AI generation. Normally I'm the one getting shot in the back of the head because I'm "too laid-back" on what I think about AI generation.
>>
>>25498849
WNs get a pass because its so amateur/hobbyist and a book without a cover cant succeed and art is expensive as shit
Just how the ecosystem shook out. Neither the authors nor readers on RR much care, barring the mentioned loud minority

>>25499055
I think so too, which is why I said that initially. I am not going to persecute anyone for using AI on their covers or anything, specially for a WN project, but I do think it speaks of a lack of passion and if someone doesn't care about their project enough to put some bucks for some handmade quality, then its hard for me to also care. But really, that is my own conviction as a creative, not just an artist.

Here's a very small excerpt from a story I'll... probably never finish so I'm ok posting:

"Alright! I'm gonna win this thing and become rich and famous!" A pilot within earshot of Nero yelled.
"Man, your record is thirty wins against sixty losses. A literal two-to-one ratio. You'll lose on the second round tops," one of his pals ruined the cheer.
"Eh, whatever! Our highschool data doesn't transfer into college or specialized schools. Clean slate! I'll build my legend from here, you'll see!"
Nero snorted as he oversaw the five engineers doing a final checkup on his Mech.
The hangar below the Asteroid Colosseum was dirty and barely serviceable enough for him. Nero Deil-Redon did not appreciate being forced to partake in this event, especially not when surrounded by such… scum. He didn't want to think of them like that, but what else was he meant to do? People with the resources to participate in Mech Combat at this age should not be so complacent!
He shook his head. The engineering team finally stepped away from the six meters tall machine.
The DR4-G0N. Casual name: The Dragon. Deil-Redon Four, Generation Zero Nero. A prototype Mech only Nero had access to. It was sharp-looking, painted purple and gold for the colors of the Deil-Redon company, biggest Mech manufacturer in the sector. A quasi-triangular torso, barely within regulations. Arms which looked a tad too long and thin, a diamond head like that of a snake, and feet which appeared to lack a few of the joints every other Mech in the hangar had.
It was, of course, because this prototype would crush the competition with little issue. He didn't feel proud of the superior technology afforded to him by his wealth and position, but he'd be hard pressed to find any real guilt when his opponents were the brutish kind who believed their school records were irrelevant.
Nero himself had a record of Two Hundred and Seventy Four wins and Twenty-five losses. Just short of three hundred matches, with less than a ten-percent of losses. He had the best record in the competition, by a long shot. Hadn't he seen someone without even a single win taking part? Fools, all of them.
He yearned to step out into the real world of Mech Combat, face real opponents, and earn the title of Galaxy Warrior, the highest honor a Mech Pilot could earn.
But first things first.
He walked towards The Dragon. The hangar, a good ten meters tall, had walkways to let pilots access the cockpits. The walls were plain, silvery steel, rust-less despite the lack of proper maintenance as most of the year this place didn't even have oxygen. Still, plain and dusty. They could've at least cleaned it before the competition.
Nero sighed as he climbed into his Mech. The new version of the Predictive AI came online, and he made sure he had all the data on the handful of relevant rivals.
He had little expectations for the event. Maybe he'd try to win without losing a single point, to add some challenge to it.

More importantly: you don't want those people as readers in the first place. They will nitpick your story to death and tank your review score.

Think about all those smut stories for women. It is immediately obvious that's what the stories are about. People like me would not like those stories and world rate them with a low score, but because we can immediately tell what they are we stay away from them and don't rate them.>>25499741

>I'd give up 60 minutes of daily writing time if I could be assured of 60 paying readers a day
You still need to check those places even if you don't get customers. You've got to troubleshoot issues that you're almost certainly going to run into if you're mailing pdfs to so many people.

It also ties you into not getting any breaks. Do you think readers will go "oh, I paid him Friday evening, I'll just wait until Monday morning before I can read"?

Fun fact: I don't have a schedule. Or a routine. I'm currenlty sleeping 4hs 2 times a day instead of a full 8hs because, uh. who knows, my brain.
Whether you get the ebook immediately or not is based entirely on whether I'm awake at the time.

But you /are/ correct in that i don't think this'll escalate well. I'll cross that bridge when I get there, I suck at planning.

I cannot for the life of me write a fast paced story. I need to learn how people take narrative shortcuts. Although it's possible I'm influenced too much by Tolkein and GRRM and Brown and Hamilton and other epic length SFF.
