Agreed.

When I first started it, I knew vaguely that it was a book about tyrannical world government and oppressed prisoners, but I wasn't expecting it to have one of the most instantly captivating love stories of all time at the heart of it, driving me to not just read about the evil machinations of the God-State and the psychological abuse of the rest of the population, but to genuinely FEEL what the characters were feeling.

I expected it to be intellectually stimulating, but I did not expect it to be a literal page-turner that has stuck with me from the moment I finished it all the way to today, almost 30 years later.

It's a book that I consider essential reading. If you read at all and you haven't read 1984, you really don't know what a book can do to you.

Animal Farm is neat. 1984 is Literature.
