>the plot is literally "the world's most raped man kills himself"
>>25493386Foids love it. Do they really hate gay men that much?
>>25493386misleading synopsis OP. you make it sound like it's a book worth reading
>Jude St. Francis>Willem Ragnarsson>Malcolm Irvine>Jean-Baptiste "JB" Marion>Andy ContractorWhat the fuck kind of names are these? I can tell the book will be over the top pretentious based on that alone.
>>25493386You can make Sade's books sound just as silly and they are but they also have a point and are considered very much worth reading. It's closer to a thought experiment than a novel, and regardless of its quality (it's shit) it is at least interesting and thought provoking in a way no other co temporary novel is>>25493395It's Rebelaisian
>>25493386Modern women love it because of how they think:- this person suffered- i am empathising - therefore, i too am suffering- therefore, i too am a victimIt's 'literally me' lit for privileged western women who need surrogate suffering to help reinforce their constructed narrative of being on the oppressed rather than oppressor side of the coin.
>>25493518Example in the first amazon review I checked:performative annotating pic + surrogate suffering------------------------------------------------------Heard so much rubbish about this book, told not to read it as it’s so upsetting and should never have been written.Yes I cried like a baby at the end of this book, because it was the most emotional I have ever been in 40 years of reading books. Outstanding writing…. SpeechlessHowever,We really need to climb outside our peachy PC lives and experience the lives of others only then have we truly got anything to moan about. A little life is a story but it’s real, people live life’s like these guys and no amount of ignorance should ever stop anyone wanting to read and experience the reality of hard living. No one should be told to not read this book.Get over yourself and anyone who moans about this book.Vast majority of people will read this book and be forever self aware, knowing and loving of a life that is only sometimes hard and with the words of A little life on your mind, be grateful the hardest part of your day is deciding if you should read a book.An outstanding view on human nature, we can be our own worse enemies and the self talk, the way we see the world can be overtaken by how we think. It’s not easy to break, to not easy or simple but happens to millions of people. People are living like this everyday and we need to be aware, living in 21st century is about more, being more than a hashtag.Understanding that life is not a rollercoaster it can be a absolute nightmare and Hanya Yanagihara writing is breathtaking. Yes this book made me so mad because characters were horrid to others. This book made me so sad that I felt changed. Some call this triggering for me I call this reality check. People suffer with their own minds and we need to know about all areas of life and living to truly embrace life.
My wife is a complete normie and she read that book and cried. I guess it's womanslop, I can't blame her, I read crap like Celine at one point too.
>>25493388They get off on seeing men suffer.
Also you niggers are so blinded by your misogyny. The value of fiction is that it makes the brain live through whatever you're reading. Particularly with feels/social stuff-based literature. Yes studies were done on that. So >>25493540- the review is unironically correct. The "surrogate suffering" is also correct, but there is nothing bad about it, in fact it is legitimately a learning experience for women because they process things more emotionally/socially. So I retract my womanslop diagnosis, it's a good book, and Celine is a decent writer from that perspective. Just, /lit/'s problem with THIS book is, it's aimed at women so it's about gays and sex and self-sabotage-from-position-of-weakness. If it was aimed at men, it'd be self-sabotage from being too stoic or like, aggressive and lawless. Then /lit/ would love it or be neutral about it.
>>25493408What is the thought experiment? I've not read I'm just curious
>>25493553To state it explicitly... I do not concern myself with the opinion of faggots in addition to those of the modern woman. Please do not contact me again.
>>25493408It's not and you're pretentious.
>>25493540>A little life is a story but it’s real, people live life’s like these guys and no amount of ignorance should ever stop anyone wanting to read and experience the reality of hard living. What the fuck? No it isn't. Maybe initially it just seems like a person who lived an especially hard life, but it quickly nosedives into pure absurdism.
>>25493386Every time I see that cover I can't help but think it's Kyle MacLachlan grimacing.
>>25493386Great book. The emotionally stunted gay protag dies at the end by his own hand. 10/10
It's a good tragic premise that's cheapened by the author using it as a soapbox for her views about the utility of therapyIt's not a surprise that Jude an heros, it's laid out from the beginning that that's going to happen. The doctor overexplains it for the slow reader via his diagnosis of Jude's spinal injury: "Whoever told you this would heal was lying to preserve your feelings. Some people don't get better."The good elements of the book come from the journey to reach the foregone conclusion. Jude doesn't get better no matter how much help he has, and he has the best possible help. The friendship of the 4 main cast is well written in a way that's impressive for a woman to have described. Jude's adoptive father's monologue after his death is also painful because of its accuracy in describing the realized worst fears of a parent. The travel/social elements of the book are well written. The author was formerly a travel writer, which is a double edged sword because the book veers too far into making ALL the characters inexplicably wealthy and successful.>therapy is bullshit and doesn't work, I should write a book about it>accidentally writes a good, though flawed, tragedy about men>only women read it, they don't understand it>"omg twink rape is like so hot"
>>25493553just because something is emotionally doesn't mean its always correct. emotional reactions are the most primal of human ethical drives, but I thought we moved past that already?
>>25497309you're a soulless rationalist and I'll kill you
>>25493388On top of it they call it a beautiful story despite the fact that it's just misery porn. Truly the proof that foids only care about content but not style nor substance.
>>25497294No. It's cheapened by the fact that it's nothing but absurd misery porn. World's most raped man indeed. His whole life is literally just rape.
>>25497294Jude's life is absurd to the point where the author's point is completely trivial and meaningless. It's like saying "people who are damned are not saved." Yeah, do you think you are profound by saying this? Making the case that some person with a single traumatic event cannot be saved is much more profound.
>>25498707Also, Jude as a character, as a person, is one-dimensional. There is not a single ephemeral flicker of righteous anger in his being. He is nothing more than a mindless receptacle for effortless rape and humiliation and is machine-like in his consistency to turn all of his suffering inward on himself instead of ever once having the inkling that he has been wronged in some way or wanting his pain to be inflicted upon others, closing off entire dimensions of traumatic psychology to make him the most inoffensive man to ever live, maximizing his pity potential to tasteless consumers.I want to stress this: whatever point the author is trying to make is made entirely moot by the fact that Jude is the most uncredible character in fiction.
>>25493388women pretend to love to have gay friends and that they are so great, but they really barely see them as human. they just see them as fun little pets like a golden retriever.
>>25498707I think that's the thing. If Jude was just struggling with one really traumatic event in his childhood, that would be one thing, but the whole book becomes ridiculous with his past being an absurdist rape carnival.
>>25493386It's just like a Key nakige or Madoka, but instead of cunnies crying and dying it's a yaoi boy
>>25499523>weeb babble weeb babble weeb babbleholy fuck>>>/a/
>>25493596Not everyone can be saved nor needs to be saved. It's ok to just kill yourself and people should honestly stop recommending therapy and instead recommend euthanasiaYou don't think so? OK let me show you the most miserable raped man of all fiction and try and argue with me in good faith that he wouldn't be better off dead
>>25499825Anime website, tourist.
>>25493386One reviewer I read said it lacked verisimilitude, and I think that kinda sums it up. It goes to much into the territory of parody.

>>25498676>>25498707It's fair to say that Jude's life is so improbably bad that it's absurd. Everyone becomes so improbably rich that they have named estates. His doctor cares for him his whole life for free and treats him like a friend. His best friend thinks he's so great that he decides, even though he's not gay, he's in love with Jude and will live out a singular same-sex attraction with him. It's all exaggerated to the point of parody. It's all silly, that's the biggest weakness in Yanigahara's writing. If instead of thinking of Jude as "world's most raped man" you think of Jude as a person with zero self esteem + harshly abused who repeats a pattern of putting himself in situations where he'll be abused more, you can realize that some people really are like that. You might know people who really are like that. Almost definitely not a man though desu

>>25493408>You can make Sade's books sound just as silly and they are but they also have a point and are considered very much worth reading.De Sade is interesting because he's innovative. Other than that he's borderline illiterate.
>>25493395I feel like these belong in the family of "foreigner trying to come up with American-sounding names" except that Yanagihara was apparently born in the United States.
