They were taught to read out of the Bible and most of them had never read anything else, and yet their literacy level was well beyond anything modern college students who have read perhaps thousands of different books could even approach.If you read the letters of Yankee soldiers, you would see a slight drop-off in the natural poetry of their writing, but a more modern style of prose, and they were much more often taught to read in schoolhouses that used McGuffey Readers and the New England Primer which dated back to the Revolutionary period and were still largely based on Biblical teachings, but watered down for small children to comprehend easily and mixed with more of a Puritanical worldview instead of a Southern Planter worldview.

>>25495431For the most part, many of the white southerners were basically highly educated, it wasn't till after the civil war that they were strip of their land and they started again that you had more and more of the "hillbillies." (Funny enough, the same happen to native American groups that sided with the south but they love the leave out that's the reason they lost their land and had to move. Same with those forced to moved due to the war of 1812.)
