What are some books that can help people afflicted with declining English literacy? Over the last 10 years especially, it feels like my knowledge of English has slumped from a university level to that of a meathead highschool dropout, being immersed in this sea of slang on the internet. It gets to the point where I actively start forgetting words I need to describe certain things. It's really bad sometimes. I also get the impression that my average 1980s or 1990s computer manual has better writing than most books I see published in recent years at the book store.

Word per sentence trend from 1930-present is mostly a stylistic choice. Average is also a bad measure - e.g. Hemingway has a low average sentence length *on average*, but the longer sentences he does use are typically more complex and beautiful than shit 'wordy' writing.
Literacy isn't important in our modern society. It has gone the way of equestrian skills.
