In retrospect, outside of Descartes they are totally light weight when it comes to philosophy. Even Italy has outclassed them. Considering the massive population advantage they had, they should have been pumping out several Descartes but they failed to do so. Everything they do, they eventually just revert back into half asses literary criticism that goes nowhere…
>>
>>25497551
Chum. You just want to talk about D&G.
>>
I was working in noth east france for a few years, and I'm not sure what to think about french people, also not sure if that region is representative of "french people" if such a thing even exists
>>
>>25497561
It’s really difficult to judge another population when you’re not one of them. That’s a huge barrier really. People’s behaviour changes depending on who you are so as a foreigner they won’t behave towards you the same way they would towards their own.
>>
>>25497567
Yes and also the fact my french is far from perfect puts an additional barrier, although it's pretty good but you know, orders of magnitude less good than perfect
>>
>>25497551
Malebranche, Pascal, Bossuet, Renan, Comte, Saint-Simon, Saint-Just, Fourier, Alain, Bergson, Brunschvicg, Weil, Bachelard, Meyerson, Canguilhem, Simondon, Souriau, the list goes on
>>
French post-structuralism defined the latter half of 20th century so I have no idea what you are talking about frankly
>>
>>25497587
not to mention Merleau-Ponty, Henry, Marion etcetc
>>
>>25497589
they just described (critiqued) the reality, not the other way around. a lot of them saying the same shit over and over again.
>>
>>25497625
>they just described (critiqued) the reality, not the other way around
What: reality critiquing the philosopher?

>they just described (critiqued) the reality
Your "just" is doing some heavy lifting here and I always take it to be a rhetorical cop-out to hide the fact that you don't have anything to say. If you think that Saussure, Levi-Strauss, Deleuze, Foucault, Derrida arent "heavy hitters" then I think you are disingenuous considering how big their impact is still. Also not post-stucturalism but Sartre? Hello?

>same shit over and over again.
Alright lets hear it. What is this "same shit"?
>>
>>25497561
people change a lot depending on the area. the only common ground is the hate for Parisians
>>
>>25497652
Why do they hate Parisians? I was working in Lorraine
>>
>>25497551
If you play the ridiculous game of counting contributors (authors, books) from a place which shouldn't have relevnance to it, for roleplay or bragging purposes, they easily trump alternatives (yes, including the Greeks).
They dominated the middle ages and it wasn't close, although a few great outsiders pop up, plus most of them moved to France (like Duns Scot or Aquinas). This kept leading in early modernity 16-17-18th centuries both in creation and influence. Perhaps your view comes from romantizing and considerably overstimating the retardoid """canon""" listing glorifying a few 19th century figures (usually retards like Hegel instead of Maine de Biran or Bolzano writing at the same time). They have also been the forefront of the 20th century outside analytic philosophy and have a decent "analytic" tradition there too (they don't think as much in terms of this distinction, but it's certainly the best outside the English speaking world).
>they eventually just revert back into half asses literary criticism that goes nowhere…
I wonder what sort of non-education based entirely on memes you have received that it zeros on assimilating what you claim to talk about (philosophy in France) to "literary citicism". Even keeping it to things from the last hundred years (which seems to be at play), are you totally ignorant of the wars between schools of epistemology, the quarrels of the new realisms, structuralism and its ramifications, the theologisation of phenomenology, etc? I assume you have something specific in mind that acts as a scarecrow (Derrida I guess.)
>>
>>25497551
>Even Italy has outclassed them.
LOL
>>
>>25497947
What even is their contribution to western philosophy? Giovanni Gentile?
>>
>>25498063
Antonio Negri, Franco Berardi, Machiavelli, Cicero, Aquinas, Vico, Bendetto Croce, Cornelio Fabro, Antonio Gramsci, Carlo Michaelstadter, to name a few.
>>
>>25497551
lol are you serious? France and Germany are unparalleled when it comes to philosophy. it's Britain that utterly sucks at it
>>
>>25498116
>Negri, Berardi
lmao
obviously there are quite some, but the contemporary ones are all downstream from the French anyway
>>
>>25497587
>>25498116
Those are all long gone and dead. French philosophy these days is all about Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze, and other seething faggots. It's all cope about how their nation doesn't accomplish anything, they're closeted queers, and their women hit the wall at an early age and have to cover themselves in gobs of makeup, so they have to stay drunk all the time and seethe about anyone that tries to build anything or pull themselves out of the Pit.
>>25498172
The British are too busy kicking the world's ass to bother with philosophy. The British Empire may be gone, but it lives on in the American Empire, and we don't philosophize either... we just bomb the crap out of brown people, take all their stuff, and spirit away their more attractive females. Philosophy is a consolation prize for loser cultures.
>>
>>25498215
Poster so retarded he thought the Italian philosophers listed were French
>>
>>25498226
Italian, French, who the hell cares? Bunch of eurofaggots.
>>
>>25498215

Dude, even if you are just a troll, your mind is so polluted with internet cliche that I genuinely feel sad for your thought.
>>
correct me if i’m wrong but aren’t france a heavyweight when it comes to philosophy (compared to britain, compared to most western europe countries; america obviously need not be mentioned). i say this as an englishman.
>>
This is genuinely one of the worst threads on /lit/. Half of continental philosophy hails from France and French academies. Modern philosophy itself hails from France.
Also, Aquinas taught in the University of Paris, and Abelard was a Frenchman. Scholasticism is a French and English phenomenon.
I might have to log off for a while. This board is shit because teenagers that get into reading to self-improve are really annoying online.
>>
>>25498812
Same thing with French classical music. As soon as the Germans arrive people throw the French into a bin for some reason.
>>
>>25498812
i came in here firmly opposing OP but this fundamentally american-coded outcry has enlivened me and you know what?, they might be onto something. everything worth having was done first by the (greeks.. then) germans, polish, or single digit frenchmen.
>Same thing with French classical music. As soon as the Germans arrive people throw the French into a bin
quite rightly.
>>
>>25498851
>muttcoded visceral reaction telling nothing of substance
>>
>>25498812
This entire board, perhaps all of 4chan, is basically engagement bait or what we used call trolls my guy. The small amount of real discourse is few and far between and hard to distinguish from trolling. Perhaps I am being baited right now.
>>
>>25498858
ostensibly anti-mutt but that’s neither here nor there.
>>
>>25498859
NTA, and with all due respect, "baiting" and "trolls" is just cope. Everyone here is obviously angry all the time and lash out as soon as they disagree with a poster. Doesn't matter if they have no argument. The seemingly most obvious of all baits are also a lot of time just autists being genuine. Like the guy yesterday who asked for advice about the books he should give for a wedding and proceeded to insult the people who kindly gave him advice. Or the guys who spam the same thread every few weeks like howie. Nobody baits by spending all their time arguing, and that's what everyone here does.
It's time to accept that the only high IQ people on this board are the ones who visit once every few days. These people actually read and don't use this website as their doomscrolling patform.
I wrote too much. I will stop.
>>
>>25498889
>The seemingly most obvious of all baits are also a lot of time just autists being genuine.
This a good point and I accept this.
>>
>>25498784
I didn't get my opinions of the French from the Internet.
>>25498801
Only because philosophy is mostly pursued by rich, drunk layabouts in cafés. That's definitely a French thing.
>>
>>25498859
You may be a cunning linguist, but I'm a master baiter.
>>
>>25498824
Because it sucks
>>
>>25498889
Currently I'm sick otherwise I'd be reading. Can't concentrate when I'm congested.

not wrong. still - credit where credit’s due.

French temperament is most opposite of philosophical thinking. They are superficial hedonists. When French philosopher appears, it is in spite of his nature.
>>
>>25497885
>theologisation of phenomenology
outed yourself as a nigger that can't into dialectics
>>
>>25499894

Not really. French are huge doubters and we like debating.meanwhile the rest of the world will say nothing, keep their thoughts for themselves and will start posting on internet how arrogant we are because we asked "why do you think that ? I don't agree". And we have no problem confronting our ideas or our beliefs
