He was aware of his condition and his appearance. He's also one of the few poets I've read thoroughly who also sounded like a genuinely nice, good human being - the passages in the Zibaldone where he says he prefers to eat alone because he's shy and hates to bother servants really gives you a perspective into the guy.You should read him not only because he's a great poet and possibly one of the greatest Italian philosophers, but also because he can give you a perspective on how to look at objectively terrible aspects of human existence and come out of them.
