From his Arguably collection many of my favorites were his essays on his favorite writers or the ones on US politicians or presidents. In those pieces he was really in his element without the need for such a grand enemy in the form of religion, even if I also enjoyed God is Not Great despite some of its shortcomings

>>25499767Christian here. Hitchens was incredibly rhetorically gifted. Some of it was just because he was big, bold and bitchy, but some of it was actual skill. He has this argument about the USSR being anti-theist. In multiple debates he managed to respond "well the way they worshipped their leaders was basically le religion" in such a convincing way that most people didn't even question it and many applauded it. Since his death, I've seen man inspired atheists attempt the same stunt in a debate and it never landed. Not even once. The point here is not that Hitchens had flawed argumentation, sometimes he did and sometimes he didn't, the point is that he could make even a flawed argument work. That's outstanding. And if there was going to be someone whose heritage are dysfunctional arguments that people break their ankles trying to pull off, I'm glad it were the New Atheists.
I read his book “God Is Not Great” when I was a teenager. It was one of those “I can’t believe I paid actual money for this” moments. It might as well have been somebody’s blog. I had a very similar experience when I read an Ann Coulter book on an airplane.
