Asking since my recent experiences with literature were Star Wars books (Cloak of Deception, Darth Plagueis, and Jedi Prince) and Star Wars comics (1998 Star Wars run, Star Wars: Republic, Jango Fett: Open Seasons, Dark Empire trilogy, and Crimson Empire trilogy)
>>
Imagine building your life around these books and then you wake up one day and none of them are canon anymore.
>>
>>25500186
I'm annoyed by it as well, especially the decanonization of the PT and pre-PT era stuff since it was basically unnecessary given the only things that would have been affected George Lucas' version of the ST (or even the Disney ST) was the post-ROTJ era EU (Thrawn trilogy, New Jedi Order, Legacy of the Force, etc)

>>25500184
No

To both or to only one of the two questions?

who cares about being a nerd, Im in my mid 40s and wrote Star Wars fan fiction

>>25500186
Disney completely failed the Star Wars IP. Almost 40 years of source material to work with, most shows are boring and lame same as the animated ones. They ran out of ideas because they have to make everything about the clone wars
>>
>>25500223
Can you share a link to your Star Wars fanfic?
>>
You have to decide that for yourself. What are you taking away from what you're reading?
>>
>>25500223
>They make everything about the Clone Wars

Because, from a business perspective and not a creative perspective, making more Clone Wars stuff gets more to buy your game or comic or watch your show since the 2008 Clone Wars was more accessible than the CWMMP (which required one to go to a comic shop or library to pick up a comic or book, with the main exception being video games since video games are more popular than books and comics combined). Making more Clone Wars stuff would be okay if the original source material (the 2008 Clone Wars) didn't waste such a huge amount of potential and refuse to do any sort of nuance in regards to how the Republic functions, the relation between the Jedi and the Senate, why the CIS disliked the Republic (beyond that rich assholes control the CIS because you still need the support of the masses to uphold the CIS as a political entity), and why the Senators decided to give away all power to the Supreme Chancellor beyond "they like him"

2008 Clone Wars (if we assume it to be nothing but the creation of George instead of Dave Filoni) is a demonstration of Lucasfilm's (or George Lucas') greatest weakness: hyperfixation on film tech, preferring simplicity over nuance, and sacrificing any proper mature display in order to target children.

So far:
>Simply killing off the central figurehead of a large state doesn't immediately destroy the regime but instead fractures it into tiny fiefdoms who wish to maintain their relative positions of power prior to the overthrow of the central figurehead
>You need to stand for liberty even if the political scenario demands that liberties be taken away because once they are taken away they can never be given back by the institution

>Imagine building your life around these books
You could of stopped there. What does that even mean and why would you do that?
>>
>>25500266
Assuming that there is supposed to a shame aspect to having read ~300 books set in Star Wars, would it also be shameful to read the ~400 books set in Warhammer 40K?

Is the volume of books the quantitative factor for shaming someone for engaging in material about a franchise they like or liked?
>>
>>25500225
Its all on my computer, and my writing is not good some of the plots to my book are

>Luke is on a solo Mission and encounters a force vacuum in space and has to go into this dark spot, Leia and chewie have to do a diplomatic mission to get allies while they crash land, lando and Han are secretly investigating a corrupt senator who is a serial killer

>right after JAT, the new replubic sends Han, Lando, chewie c3po and a squad of cartographers to investigate and map out areas of the unknown region, they encounter cults, Sith monsters and ghoulish pirates, Leia and Luke and R2 go travel to work on their Jedi training

>detective trilogy about one of Lukes Jedi from the praxeum who has to investigate the undercity for Sith cultist murders

>book about a simple Star Wars merchant who lives in the mid rim trading with all people and him talking to someone, its like forest gump

>>25500247
>Because, from a business perspective and not a creative
most sales are going down and Star Wars has not been popular its just by oldtroons who don't know what the fans want, the sales and popularity have been declining and the vast majority of the fan base was EU fans, they could have actually put in the work to make it as popular as it was in the late 90s
>>
>>25500277
>Assuming that there is supposed to a shame aspect to having read ~300 books set in Star Wars, would it also be shameful to read the ~400 books set in Warhammer 40K
Yes???? Why are you making this a central feature of your life? It's genuinely odd to me.
>>
>>25500280
>merchant living in the mid rim and trading with all people and talking to people, like Forest Gump

>Detective trilogy about Luke's Jedi Order investigating Sith cult murders in a undercity

Sounds interesting and worthy of a read. You should try uploading those to AO3.
>>
>>25500286
I don't though. I do watch non-Star Wars stuff (I watched "American Psycho", "Mimino", and other films) and I have read non-Star Wars stuff before deciding to read EU stuff ("The Phantom Tollbooth" and "Mouseheart") and after deciding to do (like Roger Scruton's "Beauty" and Ludwig's "Lectures and Conversations On Aesthetics, Psychology, and Religious Belief")

Nerd (affectionate)
Yeah, Disney has been a net negative for this franchise. Which should help self filter out any sensible people. Come back and enjoy Andor, rewatching some old Droids cartoon, watch the fan made stuff (from cardboard to AI) or did Japan do an anime of something? Whatever. Just enjoy the good stuff
>>
>>25500356
Only Disney thing I watched was Andor since it aligned with the anti-authoritarian themes of the main six Star Wars films (Episodes I-VI). Want to watch Visions at some point.
>>
>>25500354
>I don't just watch star wars, I watch other low quality films
>I read 2 children's books
>I watched some youtube videos
And worst of all you're not even enjoying any of this. All of these crappy genre fiction threads get bumped together so it is very clearly 2-3 individuals doing it every day and all the do is whine about how miserable they are and beg for validation. Get a clue.
>>
>>25500519
How is "American Psycho" and "Mimino" low quality?

The former film was about someone who very clearly had dark tendencies being able to continue those dark tendencies by conforming to bourgeois culture.

While the latter film was about the misadventures of some Soviet pilot before his promotion. Which managed to get a chuckle out of me.

>2 children's books

I mainly picked those for the sake of brevity and because they were the ones that immediately came to my head. Most of my days in school was me reading the "Who was...?" series of books. After that, I started to get into comics (mainly DC stuff).
>>
>>25500556
If you're so desperate for a pat on the back why don't you look at things like cinematography and literacy instead of trying to convince everywhere to bend to your 3rd grade reading level? There's really nothing to discuss here and it's clear to me all you'll bring here is culture war whining and memberberries. You can read 1000 star wars novel and you still won't be "well read." If you don't want to be well read that's fine, if you want to be functionally illiterate that's fine. It's your life and your choice but don't come here begging for reddit gold.
>>
>>25500569
I didn't come here for validation. I only came here to get an opinion to a question I thought.

Also, when the fuck have I complained about culture war stuff ITT?
>>
>>25500586
>Also, when the fuck have I complained about culture war stuff ITT?
The very first post is that specific brand of grifting. All of this modern sludge always has this dogma attached to it.
>>
>>25500569
And, like, what would make a Star Wars book "3rd grade"? Is it just that it has the "Star Wars" label on it and you consider that to be inherently worthless regardless of the actual content of the product?

Would Warhammer 40K be something you consider higher quality simply that franchise is marketed as being the "more matured" franchise? Is the basis for your statement just based on vibes which you have absorbed into yourself, with said vibes being generated from ads that may not actually reflect the quality of the product?
>>
>>25500600
So you aren't allowed to complain about something being decanonized, especially if you feel that it was unnecessary or that what replaced it wasn't as good as what was being replaced?
>>
>>25500605
Star Wars novels are quite literally structured in such a way as to be understood by an age group of 8-12, similiarly to warhammer. The problem is the only people who care about this garbage are manchildren in their 40s, so you have these milennials consuming media for 8 year olds that can't let go of their childhood constantly whining it unsurprisingly doesn't meet their expectations. George Lucas himself said that the original films were made for children. Warhammer is similiarly a beer and pretzel franchise for teenagers too dumb to get into war games, with an extremely bloated and arbitrary orbiting stream of revenue. If you expect more than why not look at actual literature? Maybe you'll find out you don't even like reading.

I'm 22.

My main reason for liking Star Wars is on grounds of the franchise (at least as it used to be when it was just Episodes I-VI and not Episodes I-IX) being a franchise that is mainly anti-authoritarian, as evidenced by George Lucas being a liberal and the dialog within the PT and the events of the OT, which is of a rebellion fighting to restore a liberal democracy (the pre-PT era Republic), instead a neoliberal "democracy", fighting against a human supremacist, militarist empire.

I don't dislike Star Wars because "I don't get the same feelings I did when I was kid" because having your standards for media only be the gaining of a particular is dumb and is partly why some of modern media is bad. I dislike current Star Wars because it seems to only exist to service manchildren whose only standard of media is whether it gives them a particular feeling and if there is some cameo of a character they like.

I, as an individual, am above those cattle.
>>
>>25500223
>Disney completely failed the Star Wars IP.
Partially it was done on purpose, as a larger shift towards increasing the misery people experience- in order to cause more poverty.
However, they did believe, foolishly, that the name and brand alone would carry it further along. They had fallen for their own propaganda. Even America's biggest toy company fell because they invested so heavily in Star Wars toys and children- the spiritual heartful beings that they are- didn't give a shit.
Because there was nothing for them in those films, in those tv shows. Downgrading a Jungian masterpiece to a freudian subhuman propaganda slop is no small change.
>>
>>25500668
>whether it gives them a particular feeling
Don't think those are being evoked by the new material, not at all.
I did rewatch Star Wars episode I and I did get some of the old energy from it. It was made with healthier minds behind it.
>>
>>25500186
>>25500195
Compare the garbage fucking sequel trilogy which basically shit away the entire franchise while insulting and patronizing the whole fan base to that like 12 book (Legacy of The Force?) series with Jacen Solo and that chick that was pretty much how the saga should have wrapped up. Unforgivable with what they had to work with. Compare fucking Kylo Ren and gay Ray to Jacen Solo and whoever the female character was, who they obviously supposed to be based off of.

Being into franchises doesn't automatically make you inferior. It's how you engage with it and how you engage with others that engage with it that does. If you play and watch and read a piece of Star Wars media and don't critique it or analyze it (publicly or privately) that can be fine depending on the quality of the product. But if that product is garbage and you don't critique and analyze it, then that means that you need to develop skills for engaging with media and also read higher quality media to have a frame of reference in regards to certain things. If someone else engages with that product and says it's bad (and it is backed up with evidence and solid reasoning) and you attack them despite what they said, you would be inferior because you allowed your attachment to the franchise to cloud your judgment on both the product and the other people engaging with said product. If that someone else said it was bad and it was not backed up by evidence or solid reasoning and you attacked them, then you would be the superior person.

It's nuanced.
>>
>>25500871
I only bought the Attack of the Clones novelization since I heard it was heard good and wanted to try it out myself.

Got the "Star Wars: The Magic of Myth" book because it was recommended by EmpLemon via his "Downward Diary" channel https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VDpQkYQpK5A&pp=ygUORG93bndhcmQgZGlhcnk%3D

And I got the Star Wars Archives books because it was recommended other channels as well.

Now we've gone from genre fiction to movies to comics to cartoons to ecelebs. How much lower can our new guest take us? Will /lit/ even be usable by next month? Highly unlikely.
>>
>>25500881
>But if that product is garbage and you don't critique and analyze it
That's wrong though. Star Wars shouldn't be critiqued and analyzed. It's just trashy media to consume and forget. People putting it on a pedestal are the problem. You see it all the time. If you can only compare something to trash, then it is obviously trash. You degrade yourself greatly by engaging in this behavior.
>>
>>25500905
>Mentions why they got something
>Somehow it's bringing down a board

??????????????????????????????????
>>
>>25500907
Except that Star Wars wasn't always trash. If it was, it wouldn't have continued on past the 1980s, be carried by the EU and the Star Wars fanbase in the 1990s, continued to have films from 1999-2005, and also be carried by the EU and its fanbase from 1999-2012.

But putting that aside, you should still be able to critique and analyze media regardless of it "being something to consume and forget" because doing so can reduce the amount of junk that occupies the media landscape and because some will consume but not forget and those people may have into the industry and negatively affect it.
>>
Before he caved to popular pressure, Harold Bloom gave his true opinion of the Harry Potter books when he answered the question, "Isn't it good that the children are reading something?" -- His answer was "There is nothing to gain by reading trash, spend that time doing something useful, preferably outdoors."
>>
>>25500929
>If it was, it wouldn't have continued on past the 1980s
What kind of dumb logic is this lmao
>>
>>25500930
>He caved to popular pressure

Not really? George was always going to do the PT. The only reason why he didn't make it earlier was because he wanted to raise his children after ROTJ. The only reason he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012 was because he didn't want to spend another ten years to working on Star Wars after he married someone and he thought Disney was a good option because of the renaissance films and because Kathleen Kennedy gave him (dumb reason to have someone be the head of a company, but that was the reason nonetheless).
>>
>>25500936
That's why I said "putting that aside"
