I don't even hate Crown of Stars Book 1. I just have zero interest in continuing, I don't find the first book to be worth 6 more books, need to finish it today though. I've been kind of hoping this entire time that the ending changes my mind on that, but I might just be subconsciously out on any series longer than 5 books. I don't have enough of no life to bother with that, besides uninteresting/shallow things genuinely affect me differently than other people, its borderline unbearable.

Found this books saga called Descent: Legends of the DarkApparently, it is based off of a board game and later an app game, a game which was cancelled not long agoIt picked my interest but I'm want to make sure I don't need to play the game to enjoy the novels or that it isn't some modern fantasy slop like current MtG, WoW and D&DHas anybody here read them?

Finally read picrel and it was intensely good. Perfect interweaving of grand themes within an enjoyable SF shell. Its musings on human nature are ever so slightly deflated by the fact that the inevitable nuclear apocalypse never actually happened irl , but it is a profound and beautiful novel nonetheless. It transcends genre fic - I would class it as literary fiction. You should all read this book.>>25500875I don't tend to trust any book adaptations of another medium. Especially for something like an app or a game. It will pretty much always just be marketing slop or world-building slop.

hello /sffg/I need your help.So I was talking about cyberpunk genre and then he tells me it is retrofuturism but I said it isn't but he said it was. so I go check what retrofuturism is and got confused. still don't understand what the fuck retrofuturism is and why cyberpunk genre is considered retrofuturism.I'd like some answers because I tried with an AI and the answers confused me even more. my take is cyberpunk =/= retrofuturism but I don't have arguments for that.so I'm asking you (I think thats the perfect thread where to ask since cyberpunk is first a book genre) if you can help me?
>I tried with an AIDo people REALLY? I don't think I've ever engaged with an AI in earnest since this whole gay trend started. Recently I was considering rereading books from my childhood for nostalgia purposes and seeing what I'd think about them now. When I looked at what books would be suitable I soon realized there were very few that I had any desire to reread and fewer still that be worthwhile. I might read 3 or so, which is far less than I expectedThen I looked through series I've dropped wondering if there were any I could give another chance. Once again when looking at them I very little desire to continue them again. I dropped them for reasons that I have no problem with.Realizing this made be feel better and more content. There's no sense in having FOMO for what could've been. The past has already been decided. Even so, the idea came mind that perhaps I should give some authors another try. Why should I though? A new author has potential and authors I already like are generally safe choices.

>>25501422Well, I just finished a book and want to talk about it. Anyone else read this?Contact, by Carl Sagan. It was published in 1985 and takes place primarily from the 70s through the 90s. It follows the life of Ellie Arroway, an astronomer who participated in the search for radio signals from alien civilizations. It starts with her childhood as a very curious girl wanting to learn everything, to her experience in college as one of the only female students in science, to her time as a researcher when a signal is discovered. I won't say more on that, to avoid spoilers. The book has an optimistic outlook, unlike the other first-contact literature I've read. The world is able to set aside its petty differences and collaborate on decoding the signal, interpreting it, and embarking on megaprojects based off it. Global peace, nuclear disarmament, etc. Some things were not viewed positively though, namely the federal government. The religious and political implications of the message come up A LOT. Ellie has meetings with preachers and televangelists, one of which is actually decent. She has some reddit-level takes on religion that I assume come from Sagan but that goes away by the end.As for more superficial thoughts:The book dates itself with references to teletype machines and Cray computers going into the 2000s. Sagan didn't foresee the internet. The world powers were the Soviet Union and the US, with some cartoonish descriptions of the former that you need to look past. This book is also the hardest sci-fi I've ever read. As far as I can tell, all the science Sagan goes into on the signal is realistic, though would've gone over my head just a year or two ago. The later stuff in the book is obviously make-believe.Billionaires retiring to space stations so they wouldn't get arrested for all the bad shit they did was funny.3.5/5, a slow but enjoyable read.Earth first!
>>25501565You need to kill yourself. Nobody cares enough about you to devote ten years to stalking you. Your mother pretends you don't exist when she gets asked about her children. You have wasted years of your life on seething over a fictional person. This is your life. Eternally, KYS.

When I want to read a fantasy novel, I want the world to be coherent and free of "wacky" elements. Ideally, I’m looking for something like *The Lord of the Rings*, where the world is well-ordered and makes sense—much like in Glenn Cook’s *The Black Company*. I’m afraid that with other fantasy authors, I’ll end up disappointed because their worlds turn out to be just too wacky.

Finally finished. Maybe the first book I've read so far where I couldn't find any major problem besides some surface level tropes. It was just not interesting whatsoever. Characters weren't interesting, basically void of any thematic content aside from "A universe where women are considered as valuable as men and people pray not only to a Lord but a "Lady"" Its basically pulling that "mother nature...is female because women literally create life!" and it also implied that inheritance through the female line has a precedence over the male line, because at the very least a woman can confirm that a child is hers with more certainty than a man. Obviously something is wrong with this, since real life also has access to and understanding of all these facts, and despite that there are almost zero matriarchal, or even dual matriarch and patriarch (depending on your perspective) large scale societies. And inheritance from the male line has generally been more valued, so theres something the character who said that is missing, a complexity about reality its ignoring, to make that claim. But its really just one page, its hardly forced or contrived, and I can imagine somebody believing that perspective, the same way I could imagine somebody believing there must be a creator, even if I think both perspectives are stupid even with an ounce of sufficient thinking applied. Its kinda sad. I have no real reason to stop reading the series, but I have no reason either to keep reading. Like I said, the characters arent interesting, and theres like, no theme or point at all yet. The narrative and plot is clearly the most important part of the story, revealing what the deal is with our main featured characters and the history of their world. So my theory is that the reason I dont want to keep reading, is because Ive subconsciously realized that the reason the book isnt interesting is because it can only offer so much, being book 1 of 7 books.Makes me understand much more why the characters themselves in game of thrones could be such a value for some people. It is very very hard in my opinion to write a story, purely about the plot, without interesting characters or themes. And its even harder (annoying to read) to write a story thats too strongly about themes that doesnt come across like the author is jerking themselves off and forcing their perspective to be right because they can write it to be right (Sun Eater, Second Apocalypse)

>>25503242>He doesn't seem like the type to drop a novel even if he dislikes it.I dropped the series not the book. I've only dropped 2 books so far. One was the last book of a series who I'd grown tired of waiting to make an actual point that engages with the problems it set up. And the other was....Wolfblade, featuring a whiny 2000s teenage girl in a fantasy setting who is clearly set up to "rise from naive...to competent" and I hate that trope its almost always contrived, and rarely truly considers how difficult it is to change and grow, so they often have to imbue their main characters with absurdly convenient qualities that make that a breeze. I will not accept TV level tropes. Even anime I can tolerate for long enough, but TV tropes are a unique type of shallow.

That almost never happens.I finished it, because I usually finish books, and want to make sure somebody can't go "You didnt see this!" or "You didn't consider this detail!" when I criticize it. Holden is a bad character and so is Miller. The entire crew is bad and shallow. I am 100% sure they get more attention and focus in the later books, but I am also 100% sure they get zero depth, because of how the first book addressed complicated questions and discussions. The way they represent the "bad guys" and the way Miller solved their pronlem by the end was just contrived retarded simplistic bullshit. Neither made any sense whatsoever, it was quite literally a Deus Ex Machina "The super duper space alien thing can conveniently manifests the dead girl's consciousness, and only her, for arbitrary reasons, and Miller, whom has never met her in her life and barely actually knows her, convinces her to not listen to the super duper space alien biomechanism protocol and avoid crashing into earth" Its literally fucking retarded. It doesnt even bother to try to set this up in anyway or justify it. This was really the red line for me, when I saw that it didnt even care to make solving its problem anything more than a plot device. Its too easy to expect something to not write characters well, to not deal with moral problems well, because of how most people are and understand things. But to break your story with contrivance is just taking the easy way out, its like an explicit statement of "I AM SCARED OF COMPLEXITY, SO I WILL GIVE THE SUPERFICIAL IMPRESSION OF COMPLEXITY WITH STAKES AND DRAMATICS"

>>25505289I had a conversation with my esteemed colleague, Anonymous earlier about K:BS. As I'm the only one who read it, his post, like many others, would go ignored and unnoticed because it wasn't about a megapopular book.
>>25505289Not anymore, those were the before times. Before The War.
>>25505298Good to know Megapopular Anon.
>>25505289I tried discussing The Domination but Bakkerbitch had a melty and rabidly shot down every post.
>>25505299Yev caused The War when he created the Goodreads Group. Before then there was no division between anon and they roamed freely.

>>25505309Grim Dawn is an action role-playing game for Windows developed by Crate Entertainment and published in February 2016. A version for Xbox One was released in December 2021. Developed using the Titan Quest engine, it is set in a thematically dark fictional world loosely based on the Victorian era. It received generally favorable reviews from critics and had sold 7 million units (including its DLC) by February 2022.
>>25505301It's a simple matter of observation that a lot of book reviews go ignored.
>>25505335>>25505335>>25505335
