Some writers get stuck having to churn out the same story just with minor variations. Or get stuck with a rigid set of characters and constructed word. He had quite a bit of leeway to take Flashman in the direction that interested him. Getting paid to write about Flashy in the wild west, indulge your interest in that history, and then tell the publisher you fancy the Far East next...I wonder if his mates down the pub used to ask him 'what old Flashy's up to? 'where's he now?'

Probably not reading Flashman but I did like the author’s screenplay used as the basis of the Three Musketeers and Four Musketeers films, solid interpretation of Dumas and his humor. Also Sarah Ruden says for her translation of the Golden Ass she read the Flashman novels to prepare in order to make sure it didn’t sound like a woman translated it

By a few pages in you get to the bit with Judy (his father's mistress) and, so long as you're not some woke idiot, you'll get the character and be loving it. People should listen to the first 15 mins of the Timothy West audiobook. Just the coming home and Judy parts.
