why does Stephen King always make southerners out to be the antagonist or the idiot of the story? what does Stephen King have against southerners? do you think that a southern man cucked him at some point in his life?
>>
>>25503527
He's a yankee, that's just how they're raised
>>
>>25503527
city slicker yankee devil couldnt sneed
>>
>>25503527
Faulkner "touched" him.
>>
I think it’s more that he hates rural people and blue collar types than it is southerners in particularly, but who knows.
>>
>>25503527
Roland Deschain is spiritually southern

>a southern man cucked him at some point in his life?
No, clearly a southern man fucked him at some point in his life
>>
>>25503738
wasn't Lovecraft like that too?
>>
>>25503884
Yes, but as with his other prejudices life kind of softened his opinions. He was good friends with Two-Gun Bob after all
>>
>>25503527
Stephen King is the kind of man who always fantasizes about being the smartest guy in the room. It's enough for him that southerners are sometimes stereotyped as being stupid, it's easy for him to throw his self-insert into a town full of rednecks to smugly tell everyone off and be right about everything all of the time.
>>
>>25503896
so basically he's the average american liberal? I can't imagine a more scathing critique of this JK rowling onboarder
>>
>>25503884
mmMMmmm, on the right track

>t. southerner who grew up in SC and lives in NC
On the whole -- and this has no bearing on their moral worth as people -- Southerners are incurious, provincial, hateful hicks who reflexively attack anything they don't understand, and they understand little besides money and will-to-power. Does this mean it's actually morally correct to cause them pain or suffering? Obviously not. But we don't have to pretend that Cletus in Alabama is actually a wise grounded salt-of-the-earth sage, which is what most people do in response to this, because it's just not true. Even if you're a conservative by temperament, if you've got any cleverness or curiosity in you at all, you understand this because you've seen it; philosophy is "a bunch of tricky questions," religion is "either Christ or the Devil," the state is "hell I stand for the pledge" (but don't make me do or think about anything else other than signaling patriotism = good person), etc etc etc. And obviously this kind of person can be found in NYC and Portland and San Fran as well as Alabama, but Alabama has way more of them, and it's not seen as embarrassing to be this way here. In fact, it's seen as good -- the idea at play is "I know what the truth is because the preacher and the sheriff said so, and those damn faggot sissy satan liberals are wrong about everything that they say, so agreeing with anything they say makes me a damn faggot sissy satan worshiper, and I'm NOT THAT!" This is the source of King's contempt. Does it make him a lesser writer? Yes, it does. Is his contempt justified? Yes, it is.

I was born and raised in PA, and New York state, and we have the exact same people here, I was raised by them. Acting like it's a southern thing is bullshit at this point. The South is on the up and up, and becoming very urbanized. A good chunk of people in you're state are from New York or Boston, university educated and liberal voting.
No one want's to move to buttfuck Central PA.
Also another thing, everything you are saying coul also be said of Southern blacks, yet left wing writers like Stephen King wouldn't dare depict them in a negative way. Southern blacks are probably the poorest people in the country (besides the indians) and among the most violent as well.
>>
>>25505462
You're getting offended on my behalf; I'm the only one of us who's a Southerner.
>Acting like it's a southern thing is bullshit at this point
Yes, agreed. That's why I said
>And obviously this kind of person can be found in NYC and Portland and San Fran as well as Alabama, but Alabama has way more of them, and it's not seen as embarrassing to be this way here.
That's what I'm saying; it's not unique to the South, but culturally, economically, politically it has more sway in the South than anywhere else, outside of major metro areas like the Research Triangle, Atlanta, maybe Nashville, etc. Phrased differently; you can find this sort of person in central PA, but this is not the sort of person who runs the state of PA, or has the most money in PA, or is looked up to in PA. Again, I grew up in and still live in the South. Trust me on this
>No one wants to move to buttfuck central PA
Right, because there's nothing there worth moving to. They want to move to Philly or Pittsburgh. Nobody wants to move to buttfuck lowcountry South Carolina either, they want to move to Charleston or Augusta
>everything you're saying could also be said of Southern blacks
The mindset I'm describing isn't constrained to race. I agree with this
>left wing writers like Stephen King wouldn't dare depict blacks in a negative way
This is true, but it has no bearing on what I'm saying
>Southern blacks are probably the poorest people in the country besides the indians
Assuming you mean natives (not trying to woke all over you, trying to make sure you mean feather and not red dot) then yeah, this is probably true. Probably a roughly three-way tie between some buttfuck nowhere former coal towns in Appalachia, Southern rural blacks as a whole, and native reservations.
>and among the most violent as well
I don't know if this is true or not. On its face it doesn't seem false, lots of poverty, lots of guns, etc. But this has no bearing on what I'm saying
>>
>>25503527
I guess you could say he’s got … wait for it … Maine character energy

you make a good point. I understand what you mean. I would argue that the type of person you are talking about HAS some sway up here, it isn't the same amount he'd have in Alabama or Arkansas, but I'd say PA has gotten a lot redder in my lifetime. We were once considered a blue state, lots of union democrat types. We've slowly turned into a purple state, with red leanings. Looking at Philly and Pittsbrugh suburbs you'll find this too. Ohio is an even more extreme example, I've never lived there but I have lots of family that do. Ohio is basically a red state now.

>I don't know if this is true or not. On its face it doesn't seem false, lots of poverty, lots of guns, etc. But this has no bearing on what I'm saying
I'm talking about violent crime. Black Majority cities in the South are among the most dangerous in the country, almost latin american tier violent crime. Cities like Memphis, New Orleans, Jackson, Bessemer, Baton Rouge. You sometimes see progressives bringing this up (the fact that Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi the most dangerous states) that's not to say that Northern blacks don't commit a lot of crime (they do, especially in the rust belt, and mid Atlantic area)
>>25503738
This cuts to the root of it. You see this type of rhetoric in different forms. Making fun of Southerners is popular, but you also see middle class liberal urbanites poking fun at rural or blue collar people more broadly. I've met educated, upper middle class people from Philly and Pittsburgh that genuinely talk about Berks county, or Armstrong county like they are full of clan robe wearing, moonshine drinking, banjo playing toothless hicks who live in shacks with no electricity, there talking about people that live like forty minutes away from them. Someone who grew up where I did may as well be from a foreign country.

Notice how you're not defending the kind of person I'm talking about, you're just assembling an image of the kind of person who you think would say the thing I said, and then attacking that image? Consider this for a moment
>>25505525
>the south's full of violent crime
Didn't know that the most violent cities were in the South. Always just assumed they were in other places. Learn something new every day.
>PA has gotten redder along with Ohio
Yeah, for sure. I think this red shift's correlated with an increase in the kind of person I'm talking about, but only very, very loosely, and the situation's better explained by resentment about immigration, economic anxiety, wanting to stick it to the sanctimonious wokes, belief that the GOP/Trump will bring back industry to those regions, some combination of those is a much better explainer
>>
>>25505893
>Notice how you're not defending the kind of person I'm talking about, you're just assembling an image of the kind of person who you think would say the thing I said, and then attacking that image?
Yeah because those kinds of rednecks exist and are insufferable, but that mindset isn't exclusive to rednecks since they have an equally insufferable mirror image.

You're complaining about median-person-behaviour and projecting it onto your particular culture reflexively and in accord with the culture(s) you lionize. Assuming you're actually southern and not an immigrant. Please look up what selection effects are. Also backwood kids now are dying their hair and getting into weird shit via the Internet, I don't think you have a grasp on what the rural south is like now.
>>
>>25505462
>The South is on the up and up, and becoming very urbanized. A good chunk of people in you're state are from New York or Boston, university educated and liberal voting.
This is a cancer colocated with the south that is killing it. None of it has much to do with us.

Boomers hate the working class and shit on white proles as an in-group signifier. See e.g. Jaws where the police chief and the shark scientist snicker at the idiot villagers, or Field Of Dreams with its ridiculous B-plot about Iowa soccer moms (bad) banning books by some hippy urban author (good). Almost any popular media from the 70s/80s and reaching into 90s by these types has working-class=southerner=hick.

Meanwhile in real life the North East shot itself in the foot with deindustrialization, high taxes, high regulations and the Sun Belt is now the economic (and increasingly cultural) engine of the US. North East boomers largely lost, the future of this country does business in Texas and gets married in Nashville and listens to music from Georgia, and the North East has been relegated to an appendage on NYC.
