Are there any other femanons on /lit/? How do you deal with how the world always seems to want us to read modern books to fit in instead of reading literary classics and classic poetry. None of my friends take an interest in the classic book shelf I have on my goodreads account but the second I read a modern YA or romance . When I make recommendations to my literary circle, 90 % of discussion goes to modern books except the rest when the only response is that I had to read that in high school and I tend to just skim that, when the language is a lot more colorful than modern books. It helps me to listen to audiobooks when I'm doing other things like laundry or cooking. I blame school for ruining the appeal of classic literature.

i can tell you're actually a woman by the way you whine
like, boohoo, it's true women are huge slop devourers but 99% of men don't read anything at all and for half the ones that do it's some weird performative political larp thing
you can find book clubs and stuff with a focus on more serious literature, i personally have never really enjoyed having the company but in my experience it's still mostly women
if you want the real bitter pill accept that reading is a solitary hobby and not a social one

I know the feeling. My friend and I used to be big on literary discussion back in highschool but now she's gone full into spicy and/or cozy fantasy. She's also generally just rejected any kind of media that gets even a little dark or even slightly sad. Like she got us both reading the Silo series at one point and then dropped it because a major character died and she couldn't handle it. Just finished rereading Frankenstein for the first time since highschool (it was one of my favorites back then) and I have no one to talk to about it.
