There was nowhere to go except school and home. If you wanted to go anywhere even remotely interesting you have to beg your parents or someone else's parents to bring you there and it's a 40 minute car ride both ways. Yes, it is hell. I think of the suburb I grew up in as a cage with lots of little cages all lined up in it.

>>25506369The alternative is a rural neighborhood. I'm out an hour west of Portland. It's mostly farm land. I'm close to a town for convenience and an hour from a city if I need to fly somewhere or want to see a concert. The best part about this is that I live in a place that is very quiet
even though i'm 100% aware of it, it's constantly a shock to me how little people actually know about cities, even ones that they live in. a lot of people think modern residential suburbs are just a natural progression of urban planning principles but i would argue that isn't the case - if you look at the origins of the first suburb, levittown, which was built by the real estate developer levitt & sons, you'll come across the admission that they created it basically because the hyper specific market conditions were ripe for it and after only a couple of decades at most that stopped being the case but by that point the culture of civic design had been completely corroded by the acidic nature of suburban planning that they literally forgot how to build anything else and so they just continued building resident suburbs as the default mode of urbanism. it wasn't until the absolute breaking point in the past 15 or so years that planners and groups finally decided that something has to be done about this economic sinkhole as for literature about suburbs? i've mostly just read non-fiction studies, urbanist journals and proposal articles but here's some stuff that is essential reading for you guys:>the death and life of great american cities by jacobs>the city in history by mumford>from the ground up by mumford>a pattern language by alexander>seeing like a state by scott>non places by marc auge>the architecture of community by krier>the geography of nowhere by kunstler
