The villains are just idiots, they can do no right and don't really have character arcs or progression. The dialogue is interestingly catchy and idiomatic and that helps establish the setting/build the world in a way that feels organic. I think that's what I liked most. Torqual getting his ass handed to him is one of the most kino swordfights in all of fantasy.

Out of the Silent Planet was basically fun pulp, a planetary escapade with a Christian message and a very Wellsian protagonist/general feel. Perelandra began similarly but quickly became a series of religious debates which nevertheless was pretty readable. So far That Hideous Strength is some sort of dystopian/thriller about a satanic corporation trying to covertly bring about the complete emancipation of humanity from God or something similar. There are some weird parallels bring drawn to Arthurian myth which are what I find most intriguing so far. I can see why this book has more of a modern appeal than the others.I find Lewis strange in that he has such mainstream protestant religious views which he nevertheless demonstrates and justifies in these bizarre fictional settings. I can't tell from which direction the neuroticism is coming;— Does he feel some intense religious fervor which necessites the writing? Or is he just naturally drawn to speculative imagining and trying to reconcile that with his christianity and direct the energy toward Christian ends?

The narrator is the youngest and has never known anything else.We get to watch as the other women try to tell the child what life was like outside, about their families, their lives, and also how the world works. The child has a hard time with some of them, since she's never seen any of it for herself. That's probably the most interesting aspect: seeing what our society would be thought of by someone who's never known it.4/5, a nice short read. I think the original English title is more apt though, The Mistress of Silence.

It's okay. Some of the worldbuilding is genuinely interesting and the usual tropes of litrpg progression are predictably entertaining, but like with the author's other series 'Chrysalis' the characters are by and large very unlikable which makes it hard to really care much about the goings on. At least in this book's case that's more or less the point, but I find that it being intentional doesn't count for much.
