I grew up with dictionaries and still have my two favorites somewhere. Bank in the day, pre-2020 googling a word just straight up gave you the dictionary definition. Now even when you add 'definition' to the search you don't really get the dictionary definition but some one line summary.

Also you can't read online definitions from cover to cover. Still I'm not sure who is buying dictionaries in 2026 since not many people did that even back when.

I think they're a good idea for children. I hate seeing this push for tech in the classroom / learning at home (outside of specifically teaching about computers and IT).

Thinking of the highly intelligent people I've met, a consistent trend is they all had very offline or old school education. Fountain pens and paper, physical books, blackboards and chalk, didactic teaching, chess clubs, etc. Big contrast to this horrible trend of interactive white boards, apps, tablets, youtube, etc.

If you frequently need to refer to a dictionary then a physical copy is still a smart choice.

Language learning is another big sector for dictionary sales / use.
