they're still selling physical dictionaries, so I was wondering who is buying and using them. Maybe it's nice for when you're reading a book so you don't get distracted by using a phone or computer when you're easily distracted like me.
I grew up with dictionaries and still have my two favorites somewhere. Bank in the day, pre-2020 googling a word just straight up gave you the dictionary definition. Now even when you add 'definition' to the search you don't really get the dictionary definition but some one line summary. Also you can't read online definitions from cover to cover. Still I'm not sure who is buying dictionaries in 2026 since not many people did that even back when.
>>25506076I think they're a good idea for children. I hate seeing this push for tech in the classroom / learning at home (outside of specifically teaching about computers and IT). Thinking of the highly intelligent people I've met, a consistent trend is they all had very offline or old school education. Fountain pens and paper, physical books, blackboards and chalk, didactic teaching, chess clubs, etc. Big contrast to this horrible trend of interactive white boards, apps, tablets, youtube, etc.>Maybe it's nice for when you're reading a book so you don't get distracted by using a phone or computer when you're easily distracted like me.If you frequently need to refer to a dictionary then a physical copy is still a smart choice. Language learning is another big sector for dictionary sales / use.

>>25506123aka reddit spacing, chat gpt and reddit are the same information
>>25506123I'm an oldfag and I haven't cared about 'le reddit spacing!' for more years than I remember. Particularly on a board where most posters are literate and not 14yo try-hards desperately trying to flex their 4chan terminology.

>>25506076Me, because I don't trust those motherfuckers to not destroy words, I have a collection of old and new dictionaries.
