What do you think of Beowulf? How does it compare to other old poems and legends and myths?
Biowolf? Is that the latest knotting romantasy?
>>25506847>legends and mythsYou need to be more specific because it's fairly new by the standards of myths and legends. If I'm being completely transparent I honestly find it extremely stupid.
>>25506847It's a funny mixture. Very old (and good) stuff with a layer of Christianity (not good) over the top. The two things just don't go together at all, but there we are.
>>25506879>>25506902Cringe.
>>25506902It neither compares to something like the Odyssey or the Bible. I feel it is basically a comic book. A superhero slays the physical embodiment of evil in a bleak doomed world. Time and time again we see these awful tropes, it's like the first warning sign of the death of human thought and all the awful generic things that haunt media today.
>>25506924Reductionism is truly the midwit's favorite tool.
>>25506847Short and sweet epic poem. Kind of reminds me of show wrestling.
>>25507086Feel free to say what part of my assessment is reductive. Beowulf is basically a flawless cardboard cut out representation of a human slaying one-note monsters who unquestionably deserve to die in an often fetishized dystopian setting. The image for the OP itself leans into what I'm asserting, as it was an extremely corny CG movie designed to look like video game cinematic with all the actors that typically appear in typical mindless blockbusters like Angelina Jolie, which is a perfect fit for this moronic story. It's so ironic that OP wants to compare this to other myths, as the foundational story of the western canon, the Iliad and the Odyssey, portrays the pursuit of eternal glory found in Beowulf as highly destructive and moronic.
I enjoyed it more than any other epic poem.
>>25506924>>25507101This is just an incorrect interpretation. No point in arguing with this guy. He speed-read the poem and so he doesn't know what he's talking about.
>>25507142You're just a troll trying to enshittify the board. No discussion, only astroturfing. The only thing modern 4cuck knows how to do. Go ahead and spam garbage all over this board that gets 10 posts a day, convincing no one and just driving it down to 0 posts a day. I suppose you'll be the victor then.
>>25506924>I feel it is basically a comic book.
>>25506924Beowulf mogs the Odyssey and the Bible in terms of legends. It speaks to something primordial.
>>25507162>It speaks to something primordial. It was written in 1000CE and is a nostalgic piece pining over an age which has not ever existed heavily filtered through the modern perspective of the monk who wrote it, complete with extremely forced and unnatural didactic speeches, which is why it feels precisely the opposite of primordial.
>>25507169>it's not primordial, it was written in 1000Just midwit things
>>25506847I enjoyed it.Beowulf could have jumped Grendel before he started munching on his pal, though.>Grendel eats a guy: I sleep>Grendel puts his hand on me: REAL SHIT?!
>>25507190I think that makes it more real, eating a guy is pretty intimidating, I wouldn't want to interrupt him either.
>>25507184How can you say a Christian work by an individual author put to text is primordial but works born of communal performances by bards are not? It's absurd. Beowulf itself is a perversion of the primeval, depicting it as some untamed immoral evil. Nature itself is a hostile force in Beowulf. This is because the pagan gods are absent and cannot be bargained with. It is good vs evil rather than order vs chaos. It almost feels like a severe regression over a more nuanced and mature understanding.
>>25507227You write like a fag.
>>25507162Are you American by chance?
>>25507277>Heh midwit, you talk like a fag and your shits all retardedAlright.
>>25506924>>25507101Post wrists
>>25507227>Nature itself is a hostile force in Beowulf.Go to Africa, the lion will still eat you limb by limb regardless of how many times you quote the bible to him, as your flesh is torn off your skeleton the lion's unthinking eyes will be the last thing you see, as you beg the lord to save you instead of listening when he showed you the lion is a beast of lower morals.

Beowulf must have been about 16 when he fought Grendel and his mother. What the hell are you doing with your life, anon? Yes, I'm talking to (You).
>>25507526Interesting
>>25507101Both the poem and movie are great; you have hardly even a surface-level understanding of either and an arrogance to go along with it. If Beowulf can be reduced to a "comic book" then the Bible can be reduced to a jewish fairytale and the Odyssey a tale of a complicated man.
>>25506924>>25507101Why are you comparing it to 2 of the greatest epic poems ever written though instead to other similar legends in greek mythology? There are plenty of greek myths about a hero slaying a monster who unquestionably deserves to die too. Like the legend of Perseus slaying Medusa or Theseus slaying the Minotaur or the trials of Hercules. Does no legend have any value to you if it doesn't compare in scope and philosophical complexity to the Iliad and the Odyssey? The fact that this simplistic foundational story has survived in nearly identical form across so many cultures all the way to our modern times is incredibly fascinating to me. What you're doing is like judging the pyramid as a too symplistic architectural shape and comparing it unfavorably to some elaborate gothic cathetral.
>>25506847Meh
>>25506924This is really myopic. Beowulf was probably more about the death of paganism in europe than it was about grendel or superheroes.
>>25506847Pretty cool story, feels like it gets some historical events more correct than ones related to Boðvar Bjarki, like Beowulf being based on a Geatish warrior instead of a Norwegian
>>25508487I read a booklet by Tom Shippey arguing Beowulf is highly historical, with a lot of corroboration in archaeology and other written sources. First of all, the poem was probably composed in the first half of the 8th Century, because of the remarkable fact that Beowulf is the only written source that matches the spelling of scholars' reconstruction of the original name of the Merovingian dynasty, so it was probably written before that dynasty ended in 751. And there are records of names in Northeast England that match Geatish kings, implying that the Geats were among the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes that migrated to Britain. So Beowulf may be described as historical fiction, with the fictional characters of Beowulf, Grendel, etc. inserted to a historical period alongside the audience's own actual ancestors. The non-fantastical political situations described in the poem are most likely real. The disappointing thing, though, is that the ruins of Heorot have not been unearthed in the place it should be, although plenty of other mead halls of the same period have been found.
>>25507562I was 30 when I killed a lich
>>25507607Kek the movie is fucking terrible is a humilation ritual for fans of the poem.
>>25508598t. christcuck. go worship dead kikes faggot
>>25506847Dolphin road
>>25506847Been wanting to read Heaney's version.
>>25508504Heorot has to be one of the 3 excavated halls in Lejre, Zealand, but we'll never really know for sure
>>25508598>humilation ritualActually it's more like a secular religion
I translated the first half of beowulf in college and I found that the language is absolutely amazing but the story is pretty lacking. If you can't read old english you are missing out on 75% of what makes beowulf great. Thankfully it's very easy to understand if you're fluent in english and have a cursory understanding of another indo european language, especially german
When picrel came out, i thought it was a weird take on Beowulf initially.
There's a continuity error with a sword changing between iron and steel.0/10, completely unreadable
>>25506847I found Song of Roland to be far better than Beowulf
Bro fought a fire-breathing dragon while covered in gold armor. He was too dumb to live.

>>25510460Tell me more. I'd like to check with my copy. Make sure it isn't a translation issue.
>>25510650>Doomslayer>slayerkys, nuDoom tranny.
>>25507607>and the Odyssey a tale of a complicated manEmily Wilson already did.

>>25508607>christian poemCope. Also what's based about making the epic hero a liar and pathetic scumbag?
>>25510473If I'm not mistaken, the dragon wasn't fire breathing and spat venom instead.
