I've been to book clubs set up by strangers and it isn't very fun and I didnt meet anyone. I tried to start some when I was in college and failed miserably. The best route is just having one with a small circle of literary friends and occasionally inviting a new person one of you knows.

I was in the Jeselnik book club earlier this year, but he recommended two woke books in a row, one of them being the worst novella I've ever read, and I decided I was better off picking my own books.

The idea SOUNDS good, in the sense that you have people to talk with about books you read, but the trouble is the books that the club wants to read are probably not going to be the books you want to read. I gave up reading assignments when I graduated college. Reading that I do not want to do for its own sake is a chore, and I don't need more chores in my life.
