Korea is still obsessed with academies but is also getting into real world earth settings but with cheats/systems. Japs are going for more slow stuff like Apothecary Diaries and various comfyslop. Though I don't think it will ever replace the scale of isekai. Also in general regression is slowly replacing isekai. >>25508584You must be a youngfag who doesn't remember when HP1 and Twilight came out originally. They were massive hits from the first volume. Massively popular, sold huge numbers, orders of magnitude more than anything else coming out at that time.Yes, they got somehow even more insanely popular as more books came out and word of mouth spread even further, but there was no question that Harry Potter and the [Philosopher's|Sorcerer's] Stone was a phenomenon. My parents were the super religious, anti-witchcraft types who didn't let me possess pokemon cards. THEY bought a copy of HP1 to "check it out" and see if it was kid appropriate. I found it lying around my parents' bedroom and read basically the entire thing in one sitting, right there (age 10 or 11 IIRC). After that they got off their asses and finished it and saw that I escaped demonic possession for several days just fine and decided it was no problem. There's really nothing to compare that kind of success to today.Anyway sequels do tend to do worse than the original story unless the original story was popular and you've cultivated a big AND GROWING fanbase. Unless you WANT to write the story for non-success reasons, it'd be better to move on.

>>25510296I can't stand audiobooks, the VA telling you how the character feels doesn't feel nearly as intimate as reading their thoughts yourself. >>25510343Not that anon, but I'll occasionally see sentences (usually when the author is fucking with their readers) where the amount and choice of details is off and I'll reread that shit to figure out what the author is setting up for.As an example, if a writer is describing how beautiful a character is, but isn't mentioning any curves, that can be a setup for the character being a male.

Royal Road's best rated page is broken. Why is William Oh a 4.79 score with 23000 followers but "Marvelous Mr. Penn" 4.83 with 2000 followers .... and Mr Penn is higherIt doesnt weigh actual readers enough. It's obviously broken, terrible algorithm
>>25510488William Oh is really bad so it probably has more minimum ratings
>>25510486What are you talking about, lesbo protag is fairly common but just giving way to asexual. Which makes sense as it's a wider trend including the male MCs. The main appeal of the popular subgenres aren't romance and it should stay that way so it doesn't suffer the same fate as tradpub.
>>25510486what the fuck web novels are you reading because most popular ones dont fit those molds
>>25510489Penn has more 0.5 stars percentage wise
>>25510493If it did it would have a lower rating. I'm not sure why you're conflating ratings and followers. There are games on steam that are rated overwhelmingly positive but only 2k reviews while a more popular game is only very positive despite being played by hundreds of thousands.

>>25510492Example 1 is any Seras story, 2 is writers like Ravensdagger and the Changeling/Bob author. Not that anon but it matches up somewhat.
>>25510515Not really. It's an intentional reason to have the category over just most popular. They need fresh stuff on the frontpage to keep/get readers. Changing it to be pro-big story would be silly.

Misandrist female protag, yes or no? On the one hand you can pursue all the baseless prejudices that readers love, on the other hand those prejudices will be against your reader base's sex.
>>25510721Not on Royal Road which was what the original post was about.Even in general many harems in web novels aren't even of the sex kind and just "MC gathers a lot of girls that like him but he can't pick" thing that anime usually does. Then finally the few actual sex harems which still don't constitute casual sex.
>>25510783I don't know who this would possibly appeal to except possibly trannies
>>25510785>Even in general many harems in web novels aren't even of the sex kind and just "MC gathers a lot of girls that like him but he can't pick" thing that anime usually doesThat setup is less common nowadays. At least among works actually tagged harem. Not saying polycules are all over the place, will they or won't they is the bread and butter of romance, but at the least harem endings are WAY more common than they used to be.Honestly it's gotten to the point that even those shitty harems where the MC ends up with hundreds/thousands of mostly faceless women are more common than the bait and switch harems where they either don't choose or just choose one girl. I think writers are finally figuring out that readers don't actually like to be blue-balled.

>>25510660The upside of replying is you get more comments, which means more engagement, which can bring you higher up on the lists. The downside is, even those few readers who have a brain will switch it off and ask you to personally explain every little thing, and an author should never have to explain his own work. They also think that by having you reply to them, you're now their friend, and they're helping you and the story is like your joint project, which gives them the right to dictate how it should be done and nitpick on everything. And if anything displeases them, they'll try to emotionally blackmail you into changing it, and if they don't get their way, they'll throw the biggest tantrum on the way out. If you're okay with that, go right ahead. I didn't personally think it was ever worth it.
>>25510837I wouldn't give a bad review over something like that, but I'd definitely mention it. The Spider-Man movie kiss is probably one of the worst offenders in that regard, and even then it's perfectly in character for MJ to be a two-timing whore.
What am I getting into with The Storm King? Not sure what to expect with this in terms of story arcs and cast of characters since the intro is pretty much just world building.
>>25510660Depends on how many active readers you have, things will get really awkward if it's the same two dozen readers because they will inevitably feel closer to you by realizing you are not out of their reach and get involved in the story. If you have a lot of readers you will just come off as humble by interacting with them. It's similar to streamers. Small streamers get led around by the nose trying to please their chatters, while this is reversed for famous ones.

>>25510783Protag sounds pretty awful. But I got a deuteragonist like that. Everything that goes wrong in her life is men's fault and she really doesn't like them (she doesn't like women either). Technically, she's kind of right, but not because they're men but because they're the ones in power. Women in power do the exact same things to her, but she pretends not to notice that. She especially hates women who don't hate men. She's also kind of low-key being kept as a slave by the MC, but she asked for it and pretends like she's fine with it. I try to make her sympathetic and she's my favourite character, even though she's a total psycho. She thinks and acts like she's the real protagonist, which makes her more fun than the other characters, who all are very aware that they're not the main character. At the end of the story she betrays the MC and tries to break herself free from the slavery but fails (it's some magic bond shit). Protag is gonna overcome the betrayal and find her collapsed after having destroyed his laboratory in her attempt. Then he's going to forgive her because he sympathizes with her. I'm not sure if she will then kill herself out of spite or not, from finding the situation unbearable. It's the logical conclusion to her narrative, but she's also too funny to kill off.Anyway. I think crazy characters can be really good supporting characters. But I think the only time they work as protagonists is if the story is a comedy. Or maybe a tragedy.
I've been thinking about writing more short stories as practice. Are these websites designed specifically for serials, or is it viable to write unconnected short stories?
>>25511104there's no audience for short stories whatsoever
>>25511104>Are these websites designed specifically for serialsYes>viable to write unconnected short storiesNo not unconnectedThere's some anthologies with shared worlds on Scribblehub but that's a different thing.
>>25511104>or is it viable to write unconnected short stories?(Usually themed) Anthologies are popular on AO3 and Wattpad. Short stories are popular on AO3. Longer short stories (like getting closer to novelette) are popular on Wattpad. They aren't really common on other sites I've seen. Also by popular I mean a lot of people write them, not necessarily read them.If you're just writing for practice, your work wouldn't be out of place on either of those sites and you might find an audience.
>>25511249>Also by popular I mean a lot of people write them, not necessarily read them.Congrats! You win the threadly retard of the day award, which is quite difficult in /wng/, you must be very proud

>>25510721Not bisexual harems (unfortunately).
>>25511486A Wish to Grab Happiness features a bisexual harem if you're willing to count a trans man. Honestly I'm surprised you don't really see that that often. Trans women in harems are way more common (albeit still rare).Or did you mean harems where the harem members are bisexual? Cause those are common as fuck. Always funny when one of the harem members pulls the old uno reverse card when the MC is worried about the practical and ethical concerns of a harem and reveals herself as a bisexual who plans to be the real harem lead.>implying the other girls aren't bi>implying I haven't been seducing them alongside you>implying I wasn't using you as harem bait>implying it's going to be your harem

>>25511502I mean a male MC who fucks women and men. Unfortunately even eroge don't have bisexual MCs that often, you either get all in barafag stuff (rarely), stuff aimed at foids, or shotafag/trapfag stuff. No audience for man who fucks men and women, only an audience for a woman who fucks men and women.Society.

>>25511507Not an author but from what I gathered, most authors (and those generally who advocate for smut) tend to evade this question...but if you continue pressing them you get some garbage answers like it's natural, human nature etc
>>25511507Why do you care what the average royal road reader wants? There are plenty of subgenres that do well, including romance, smut, harem, etc
>>25511630It gets a lot of patrons. Paywalled smut is a huge moneymaker
>>25511630>garbage answers like it's natural, human natureSee, for sex and such I quite agree, but what pissess me off is when authors use this excuse to justify shit relationships or one-night stands with absolutely 0 impact that came out of nowhere. "Oh yeah, now X is dating Y, craaazy right?" and you read the story and there was absolutely NOTHING hinting at that at any point. When questioned about it, author is usually like "Well people just hook up, it's normal". and then 2 chapters later the relationship ends and we're meant to believe any of the characters is torn up about it.This criticism is aimed especially, though not exclusively, at Pirateaba.
>>25511653Aren't they one of those unironic irl asexuals.
>>25511638source: you made it up
>>25511654I don't think they've ever spoken about it, I think they just said they don't have a lot of experience—but I have to believe it's the case. Still, being asexual doesn't stop other authors from writing good relationships, and not being asexual doesn't stop others from being shit at it either, so not much of an excuse.
>>25510957RR midlister here, wasn't going to respond but for you I will.Personally I keep distance between myself and my commenters. I don't talk about my personal life, and I tend not to reply to comments except very rarely. I want people to read the story and think about it, not turn their brains off and ask me to spoil things I'm planning to reveal dozens of chapters down the line in hype moments. Plus, I think commenters like theorycrafting and arguing amongst themselves, and if I just give them the answer, they can't do that.I'm much more communicative on Patreon, with paying subscribers. As another anon said I don't want any parasocial relationships, partly because I just don't have the emotional energy to maintain internet friendships, and partly because I'm not going to compromise my artistic vision just because someone's a yapper, and I KNOW they're going to get butthurt about where I take things (having hateable characters, killing off beloved characters, etc), and I'd rather they feel I'm psychologically above them, the oracle on the mountain handing down the story, rather than the bard on the street corner they can shout at and tell me they're not going to tip me anymore (as if they were going to anyway).I hope you're taking /wng/ with a huge grain of salt. There are a lot of trolls here.
>>25511686Not the guy you responded to, but it's spooky how literally 1:1 this view is to mine. Honestly, not wanting to deal with the tedium and annoyance of a username, particularly one with some repute, is probably why I hang around here in the first place. Talking to readers is exhausting.
>>25511686This is what I consider to be a perfect approach. When writing fanfics I always reply with a "thank you" or something like that, or answer questions (as long as they're not plot related), but when it comes to RR I feel it's better to stay aloof. Fanfiction is a community outside of your control, but you must be in control of your own communities.
Holy runon sentence, my apologies for that. Also I block people who are clearly just hating the story. Immediately, without mercy.
