I downloaded a bunch of free ebooks from a dodgy looking website (https://dokumen.pub/) and now I have trouble sleeping at night, worried that my computer may be compromised with malware, viruses, pegasus etcetera

What do? Sell it and buy a new one? Or would a reinstall of my OS (fedora) be sufficient?

I regret it so much, free stuff is not worth it.

It's probably compromised. Like where do you think those bot traffic comes from? Piraters like you. Somehow everyone has been gaslighted that there are "good" and "safe" websites to pirate things.

5 or 6 different skill issues in one post, well done

Yeah, seriously. I run Fedora, but I can dual-boot into MS Windows, and can run Defender on downloaded files. But I'll tell you... in all the years I've been downloading stuff, I've only gotten one virus detection, and it was an e-book in .chm format. Next to it in the open directory was a .pdf of the same file that scanned clean. That's it. And I've downloaded a fuckton of e-books, movies, MP3s, etc. etc. Your fears are overblown.

I stole an ebook once and the poop fairy immediately made me shit my pants

I recognized the .chm file format. It's Microsoft's "compiled HTML" format. Not sure what your point is.

I bought a bunch of expensive books from Amazon. We are not the same.

Of course. There's always a catch, isn't there? Always some little 'gotcha' behind free stuff. After all, they wouldn't give it away for free unless there was something in it for them. The terrifying truth about malware is that you'll never know with some of the more sophisticated viruses and worms they are putting out, they can't be detected by man or machine, but they will silently extract your data and keystrokes nontheless, and by the time the critical moments have arrived, you can do nothing. And they won't stop at just your PC, they can even burrow their way from your PC to any network you connect to such as your home network or workplace network, and perform their sick little tricks over the network topology. It would be best to buy all new equipment and be more careful in the future. God be with you.

Copyright isn't the Lord's law, it's man's law. The term of protection was originally 17 years from the date of first publication, but thanks to Disney's well-funded lawyers, it's now the life of the author plus 70 years. This is blatant regulatory capture, and I will not respect such obvious corruption.
