About to read my first page of The Blade Itself in 2 days.
I'm 9 chapters into Fellowship, and while it really is as amazing as the reputation suggests, I really didn't like this one bit where Frodo and the fellas get captured by Barrow-wights, and they're absolutely FUCKED. But then they just sing out to Tom who magically appears and saves them.It annoyed me because it felt like the hobbits didn't learn shit, that they just got bailed out instead of having to use their wits and actually improve and change.
>>25512271You should screenshot that one page once you're done reading it and post it here, along with your thoughts. I expect at least 4 paragraphs. It has to be lengthier than the page itself. Look guys. I'm so close to tired of the fantasy I'm reading that I've almost been contemplating A Song of Ice and Fire despite it not being finished. At this point, if a single book could even convince me to read more than 2 books, I'd prefer that, than having to look for the next book as my faith in this genre only dwindles. I don't want to read stuff like Dune, PKD, and Book of the New Sun yet, because they have such grand reputations that it leaves you thinking "If I finish the best, whats left?" I'm not ready for the Gravity Rainbows and Infinite Jests and the meanderings I can predict in those, if I can barely stand to read Glokta torturing some retard with zero personality for the 3rd time as he comments "Ah hes realized the predicament hes found himself in" and gives him the exact answer he wants. Whats interesting about that? Its not even a commentary on the retardedness of torture which is academically substantiated by virtually every piece of evidence. Theres no crisis that we as a reader have any reason to personally be invested in that could even make the stupid prospect of torture as a means to an end interesting, were following a character who just follows orders and wallows in their misery every page before they torture, and then theres Logen. Don't get me wrong, I like Logen, but how much can "I dont like to kill...I dont like all this war...but I have to do it anyway to survive" be repeated every chapter before I'm supposed to pretend that the character is interesting just because its subverting the expectations of a barbarian warrior who kills and is proud of his tribe or whatever (Already experienced this with Cnauir anyway and he was far more interesting even though he was equally repetitive) as Logen fucks around LITERALLY ADMITTING TO HIMSELF THAT HES JUST FOLLOWING BAYAZ FOR NO APPARENT REASON THAT HE KNOWS OF. So Im following a repetitive surface level character whos feelings were touched upon like 5 chapters ago (his own chapters, not even counting the others) and I dont even know where hes headed, thematically, or narratively. And everytime his chapter ends, I have to expect another chapter of Jezal going "damn this training sucks, but I gotta do it. But actually I dont want to do it even though i gotta do it, but actually I have to do it now since I was made fun of by a girl I like for wanting to quit". What the fuck? who cares? I dont care. Why does this book treat characters like im supposed to fucking care about them when I have zero reason to.

>>25511288my local library had sanderson's mistborn series cataloged as sci fi

wtf is blud yapping about
>>25512435Saving is good to a point, but just read the good stuff while you can. If they turn out to be as good as you heard, see what influenced them because you can always go deeper. With PKD and Wolfe, they have so many books that it will take you a long time to get through all you want to read anyway. And you'll likely enjoy them more if you space them out.
>>25512464 (me)I do get it though, I've had a nice old copy of ulysses on my shelf for 7 years now, and I only this year decided to read dubliners and work through Joyce's publication order
>>25512435>>25512464The biggest issue I see with this approach is that you will absorb many elements of the classic works through the lesser, often derivative works; reinterpretations, satire, tropes, archetypes, reused concepts, narrative/character arcs, etc. Some of this you have undoubtedly absorbed through other mediums, but some I'm certain you have not. Starting by reading a pile of derivative slop is not just postponing the classics (to the point that you seem near to giving up the genre without having read them?), it's coming at the expense of your enjoyment of the classics when you do finally read them. Is it really worth "saving" a 10/10 book, so that when you finally do read it, through jaded eyes that have seen it all before, it's now only a 8/10?
>>25512461Have you read much Egan? That may be his most difficult books. His books in recent years have really gone for the idea over everything else.
>>25512477Well when it comes to Dune, I'm saving it for before the movie comes out because Its been a long time since I've been able to experience a book and contrast it with its adaptations fresh in memory. As for PKD, Its really just because I'm putting off short books till I experience a series worth reading. I forgot the reason I decided on this so I can't explain that right now. Its probably againg just wanting to save the better books for another time.As for Book of the New Sun? Its a combination of intimidation, wanting to save better books, and also the fact that after Dune, I won't have many options for series' I can trust somewhat to be good.Would you consider ASOIAF a classic the way its talked about? I'm not asking for literary fiction or whatever gimmick term is used. Just decently well written stuff that doesn't waste your time pretending you should care about characters and themes it hasnt done the work to build up a foundation for.

>>25512282Bombadil is cool because he's a total rebuke to the D&D-influenced autism that is ruining fantasy. He adds a kind of realism because he doesn't fit into any kind of category or even have much of a purpose in the story. He just does his own thing, this kind of force of nature or folk tale come to life who is stronger than evil but also just wants to chill in the forest. That's what I like about Tolkien is that he doesn't explain every single aspect of his world in Lord of the Rings or Beorn. There are random bits of history and folklore that just get mentioned or characters like Bombadil or Beorn who don't fit into any kind of specific slot. It makes the world feel bigger and more real when there's some mystery to it.
>>25512614I read one critique of the Simarillion is that it diminishes a lot of that mystery is a draw of Tolkien's Middle-Earth. I haven't read anything other than the Hobbit and LotR yet and I'm no lore-fiend like some people are, so I'm not sure if I should read it or not.

Are there any universities that study science fiction as a unit? Or do I have to go into pop culture “studies”?
Sup guys. I'm looking for a sci-fi novel. It had war between Earth empire and some alien lizards that had a little more advanced tech, but not too much. Like lizard ships could accelerate at 8g when human ships only did 5g and could shoot a bit further. Or lizard fighters fighting equally well in planet air and empty space unlike human crafts. It made humans, after losing all initial skirmishes, plan every battle in a way that advantage would disappear, lure aliens in closer combat. Hiding superfast small ships behind the moon and sending them on suicide attacks with no return plans or putting cruisers on radioactive asteroids where crew slowly died waiting to ambush passing alien carrier. But each trick only worked once because aliens were not retarded.Anybody knows what the title is?

Every time I read a page, I think about how much better this could be done, if just the littlest extra attention was paid to the dynamics of war, social structures and characters having reasons for doing stuff (the simple way to put it because the complicated way is too long to list out and I dont have a shorthand word for what I mean other than "substance" or "weight")The problem here, is that I'm like 90% sure that ASOIAF is actually about as bad, based on what I know of what it gets wrong about medieval society. The only question left for ASOIAF is whether its characters meet the standard im looking for.All of this are plans for after the Engineer Trilogy of course.
>>25514375>what it gets wrong about medieval society. It can't get it wrong if it isn't trying to be true. It can only be different from how it went on Earth. There's no essential progression of events and societal structures. Fantasy worlds are not Earth. It's a ridiculous comparison.
I'm going to go into the deep end. Sci-fi erotica has to be good.
>>25514374Alas, the enmity of the disaffected misanthrope.
>>25514392>has to be good.Be sure to follow-up on this thought.
First possible red flag to note if I ignore Ferro. This one is more explicit. Its actually a fairly bad, uninformed cliche to think that Barbarians wouldn't understand or be surprised by civilization. In actual history the nomads, mongol, turk, gaul types usually had civilization akin delicacies, and in the case of the xiongu. They frequently raided ancient china, and so to get them to stop without risking war, china would trade with them and offer stuff like silks and other civilized luxuries, not to mention that they would also sometimes marry with Han Chinese, and historically nearly ever single nomad tribe outside china would eventually find some way to assimilate into china, obviously not the entire nomadic society, but it happened enough that no nomad should be unfamilar with civilization. As for the western nomads, im less familar, but I also know that they would do trade and stuff with the roman empire and such. Usually the distinction of "barbarian" vs "citizen" was a relative one, they werent so disconnected from the idea of civilization, they just lived differently, and had different religions (sometimes theyd even share the same ones as the civilized). The reason this matters, is that whenever you flatten the complexity of real life, thats a red flag, of how much you understand about human kind historically to depict them, but also how much youre willing to engage in even fabricated complexities, if your foundational understanding isnt complex.Granted. This is one character with this perspective and doesn't speak for all barbarians in the story, it could be possible that he is just uniquely insulated from this stuff. Its just something to keep in mind. Its stuff like this too that makes me skeptical of ASOIAF because Im aware that the Dothraki are a notoriously similarly innacurate depiction of steppe/nomadic/mongollike societies.
>>25514389>It's a ridiculous comparison. You're just retarded and thats okay. You will never have the capacity to be aware of your retardation. Don't speak to me anymore.

it's so crazy to me how GOOD a huge amount of 40s-50s-60s pulp science fiction is, and how the campy cover art always makes it just look like goofy spacemen in buttpants with rayguns surrounded by gorn captains, and that's the only part that made it into the televization of sci fi. >>25511434You’re welcome, man. It’s nothing like I’ve ever read. I recommend starting with Captain Bluebear and then going from there. There’s a huge tone shift from Bluebear to the rest of the books but it’s very good.>>25512054Mmm that’s debatable. The first book of the Zamonia series is a bit more kid-friendly, albeit a bit “dense” in terms of some concepts (although as a kid you might just look at the surface level and not think too deeply on the details). However, Rumo is pretty violent and dark (dismemberment, cannibalism, torture and drinking are pretty common occurrences), as well as City of Dreaming Books. At the very least it’s YA but definitely not like the typical slop.
>>25515202I'll admit I only read bluebear, which felt like an entire series of children's books (though very good, elevated ones, like a German Tiffany Aching Discworld series). >>25515126>Yev doesn't read much selfpub, unless it's explicitly recommended to him by someone.I looked over what I've read. It's more accurate to say that I don't finish much selfpub, let alone webfiction (except as light novels). I've looked at a lot though, especially when I was doing /wng/ for some months. I've also tried looking at the SPFBO and SPSFC books a good bit. There was also the time I went through the selfpub charts in the mega and had fun posting about that. Aside from that, there's a lot that I've looked at that I haven't ever mentioned. However, it's also true that I don't read them much, especially by how it's usually understood here. As for explicit recommendations that I've read, there only seems to be a single one, which started as webfiction. That was because of a competition though. The rest are either group reads, impersonal suggestions, author requests, or those that I chose myself. I've turned down multiple author requests, though the only one not related to here was a random guy on Goodreads messaging as many as he could. There was also once some random person on Goodreads asked me to read their work-in-progress explicitly Sanderson derived short fiction. I didn't. All the author requests I didn't turn down went badly for all involved. On a different note, I've only requested a singlpe self-published book on NetGalley. I won't do that again. Almost everything else has been from a major publisher.
