Do anyone struggle with this book. I can't get over the ick that it's a woman writing all this. None of these are the thoughts or writing of a woman. It is just a woman trying to sound like a smart man. It reeks of insincerity.
>>25511670Actual retard take. Middlemarch is written by a woman who studied and translated Spinoza for fun and kept abreast of developments in German Idealism. You're a pseud and a phoby in comparison to the massive talent you're calling insincere.
>>25511670I'm currently the most blackpilled about women I've ever been due to the child murderer likely going unpunished and millions of women celebrating it as some sort of feminist victory. So believe me when I say that I have absolutely no desire to simp for any woman author right now. That said, George Eliot was based as fuck and one of the greatest writers in the English language.
>>25511670ESL here. I just tried it because of this post. Man the sentences are really long.
I don't read books by women so I don't have this problem
>>25511703>>25511685This is what I'm talking about. Literary white knighting is a thing. Pretending to like it because you think you are supposed to. The tell is calling it the 'GOAT' book, you didn't come up with that on your own. Your feminist instructor told you this and you repeated it.
>>25511769It is a paradox almost because if they wrote in their own female language it would be entirely different. Talking about trivialities, men, cooking, and shit-talking all the other women authors. Women authors are just copying men none of the thoughts they are writing down are their own.
>>25511738The sentences are long but they lack in soul.
>>25511825Which book do you think is full of soul, anon?
>is named George>writes like a man>looks like a manDo they think we're retarded?
>>25511934That would explain so much about why it doesn't sound like a girl wrote it.
>>25511945>Being this sexist to someone 250 years laterCHUDs are now going back in time to hate on historic figures.
Burn this website, burn the whole interwebz, destroy it all, let's go back to the cave. Please.
>>25511934yes they do and yes you (not you specifically) are
>>25511670I did not finish your post, you sound too much like a boy trying to sound like a smart man.
>>25511821Pray tell, which author was George Eliot copying when she wrote Middlemarch? In its genre of the character driven aristocratic family drama, Middlemarch has exactly one equal in the literary world, Anna Karenina, which was written 4 years after Middlemarch. Her main inspiration was the King James Bible and Shakespeare, but as far as the novel format goes, there wasn't any clear inspiration, let alone someone she copied when she wrote her Masterpiece. Ironically, Henry James would later write his novel Portrait of a Lady, which although being a decent book in its own right, actually is a very clear and inferior copy of Middlemarch.
>>25511670>Do anyone struggleYES SAAR WOMON ARE VERY DUMMB
>>25511670,ummm...george eliot is a guy
>>25511972>>25512000>>25512007>>25512159>men swarming to defend le fair maidenNo male author would ever get this kind of feverish defense over a shitpost. But when it is a woman, the lizard brain rushes to defend. You can tell that these responses are loaded because it always repeats the same cult like thinking "greatest novel in the english language" they heard from their feminist instructor and just repeat like parrots. No one has anything original to add other than superlatives.
>>25512892JK Rowling does. She makes both sides angry. This one makes both retards and grad students seethe over sunk cost.
>>25512923My point is that it's only women authors. No one gives a shit if you said Shakespeare or Dickens sucks. But if you say Middlemarch sucks you get white knights coming out in a swarm. This is not a reasonable defense of the literary canon. Especially when the only defense is "but it's the greatest! I read that on wikipedia."
>>25512927THIS NOVEL IS A CONSPIRACY AGAINST THE WHITE MAN
>>25512932It's not a conspiracy when the evidence is in front of you right in this thread. Look how absurd this thread is:Mediocre grad students rush to a woman authors defense, treating them like instagram ecelebs. White knights swarm you. You can't say anything true without triggering a military defense force to defend the queen bee. No author gets this reaction unless they're a woman.
>>25512942Try to say this about Cervantes, or Dickens, most will even agree with you. Say it about Eliot, the Bronte Sisters or Jane Austin, and the LGBT defense force will swoop in to defend the queen bee.
>>25512944What is this autism>this great thing isn't great because it's a woman>yes it's great>reee you're only defending it because it's by a woman, it's a conspiracy
>>25512948Because I am smarter than you and actually understand invisible social dynamics and how that can play out over centuries. You have to be blind to take any woman author seriously today because of how absurdly stacked it is in their favor. This novel would not fare in the top 200 let alone the GOAT were it written by a male. She played idpol back then by naming herself George and is playing idpol today by being a woman all along. It's shameless.
>>25512952>Because I am smarter than youNo.>You have to be blind to take any woman author seriously today because of how absurdly stacked it is in their favor. That works for reddit upvotes and giving validation to tiktok ecelebs, but not spending 100s of hours reading a woman author.
>>25512957I am just smarter than you about social dynamics. Yes the average redditor who goes around parroting that "Middlemarch is the greatest english novel ever written", a line that is conveniently parroted in every wikipedia and grad school class, that they're repeating like a cult. They are in fact reading the novel the entire time hugging themselves going "I am reading a woman author, I'm so special, milady, I'm here for you." All you have to do is read the responses ITT to see it in action.
>>25512960Nothing that you have said is smart. There's no redditors reading this book. They are playing the latest Mario or reading YA booktube slop.
>>25512964There are tons of reddit threads about it and every single one says the same thing. It's a cult.
>>25512990>IT'S A CONSPIRACY THEORY THAT PEOPLE LIKE THIS OBJECTIVELY GREAT BOOK. THEY'RE ALL ONLY PRETENDING TO LIKE IT. Why is the concept of quality so baffling to midwits.
This anon>>25512960is correct but as usual people get all tribal and exaggerate the other side's position. There *is* a cult around Middlemarch. It *is* overpraised. This doesn't mean it's not a good novel. Good books can be overpraised, just as bad books can be over-criticized.I think the overpraising is mostly for the reason he says. You really think all the people who maintain it's the Greatest Novel In English™ are qualified to judge? No. But does that mean their opinions have no merit at all? Also no. Their opinions are a mixture of appreciating the book, appreciating it but not appreciating (often not even knowing) all the other stuff that might compare, and knowing that's what they ought to think.Middlemarch is probably almost as good a book as you can write if you have no poetry in you. (I imagine most intelligent critics would say that Tolstoy is better but that's a high bar.)Eliot is an intelligent and perceptive and hard-working person but she can only talk; she can't sing. That's why Wuthering Heights (to pick one example) is better than Middlemarch. It doesn't do what Middlemarch does, just better. It does what Middlemarch doesn't do at all. It has another whole dimension.
>>25511670It’s written by “George”, just accept it.
>>25511670>the ickYou sound like a woman who bullies naturally cute tomboys and calls them “pick-me”.
>>25511814You have been mind raped to speak this way. Your thoughts are not your own, and you don’t even realize it. I just hope that you’re young.
>>25511814im reading adam bede it's good and the descriptions are lush i havent detected phoniness she covers some pretty recognizable woman-types in it
>>25511670>Do anyone struggle with this bookI'm not ESL, so no.
Struggle is the point
>>25513184There is a cult around almost every well beloved classic where you could make the exact same "overpraised" argument though. Middlemarch doesn't even score particularly high on most top 100 lists. It's usually found below the top 20, so if anything, I'd say it's actually kind of underrated by most critics.
>>25513566Hmm, I guess it depends what list you're looking at. It's been #1 in several I've noticed. i think it's a safe bet for a podium finish in any contemporary UK bien-pensant poll (BBC, Guardian, etc) of the type the other anon was getting so hot and bothered about.
>>25511950He's gonna take you back to the pastTo seethe at people who are already dead
>>25512892I will always white knight classic literature from retards like you. You are unable to read a book because of the identity of it's author, because of that you are basically a woman to me.
