am I supposed to read him in middle english?
>>25512911Yes obviously. Chaucer is among the easiest authors to read in Middle English and with footnotes he's a breeze.
>>25512925Chaucer's from the 1380's... I had to read him in middle english and it only started getting easy after the second or third or fourth tale. Chaucer's line (Miller's Tale, ~line 3806): "This Nicholas anon let fleen a fart / As gret as it had been a thonder dint." This after Absolon comes back for a kiss. Great stuff.
>>25512941Does it really mean fart?
>>25512941Does it really mean anon?
>>25512925What's a good edition?
>>25512975I haven't read it yet, but I got this Penguin Classics edition and it looks good. Original text with footnotes to translate harder words and lots of endnotes for historical context / references to other works
>>25512941Wow. Nicholas's fart was so loud he dented thunder.
>>25512965Anon means immediately.
>>25513284>anonymous>immediately mooseHmmm. Why are we moose again?
>>25512991That's how I read medieval Spanish.
>>25512941it's a bit like reading the work of the pervy sage. the type of ribaldry they explored then is as now. rabelais was even more creative with all of that. of course a genius.i understand its relevance but really wish it hadn't been this which was to bear the weight of eng lit on its back.
Personally, I couldn't, I needed to tap out early. There was enough there to know you were reading English but between the spelling and antiquated terminology it felt like reading the writings of someone borderline illiterate coming from modern English.I'm going to go the sissy route of reading a modernized English edition then going back to Middle English once I have a grasp as to what each passage is supposed to be saying more or less.
>>25513649>the drunken miller tells a bawdy tale of cuckoldrywhat were you expecting? have you forgotten the rest of the pilgrims?
>>25512953yes, in that story someone gets cucked and tricked into kissing the woman's arse, then she farts in his face, then when he realises what's happened he comes back and asks for a second kiss, this time the man sticks his arse out of the window, and instead of kissing it he shoves a red hot poker in his ass.
The story where the guys fuck the miller's wife and daughter was better
>>25513839the one where he has to find a way to split a fart equally between the noses of twelve monks, I also liked
It doesn't take long to figure out the language, and after that, it's basically like 1000 pages of Scottish Twitter.
>>25514492You FUCKEN want been glassed cun?
>>25513828Damn Wish it was me kissing woman's arse, hmm imagine the smell
>>25513797Which modern edition will you choose?
>>25513828corrr. CORRRR.
>>25512991Can you post the ISBN? Googling "Canterbury Tales Penguin Classics" just shows the one in the OP, which is translated.
>>25512975the correct answer is the riverside chaucer
>>25513828>shoves a red hot poker in his ass.He just slams his buttocks and with the metal part of a plough, not a poker. Chaucer is sometimes vulgar but he's not so vulgar as to have a character sodomised with a metal object.
>>25515172Why? I don't like how anons never explain their recommendations. Makes you wonder if they've even read them.
