Safe edgy Gantz for Redditors
>>25513521DCC has nothing in common with Gantz and you clearly haven't read either.
>>25513521Even when I read the title I knew it was a redditors wet dream. No, I will not look further into this matter, the book is dead to me by association.
>>25514210It feels a lot like Gantz, but indeed a lot less edgy. And also insanely much gayer.
>>25513521I'm enjoying the book. Do it through audiobook so I can listen while I drive to work or do mindless chores.I don't dive much into fiction but this is fun. It's surprisingly well constructed in terms of setup and payoff. Just when you think something was forgotten it comes right back.
>>25514210I just started listening to the audiobook and my first thought was how much it reminds me of Gantz.
>>25513521>I never considered myself a big fan of cats. But, if we're being truthful here, I liked Donut. That cat did not give two shits about anybody or anything, and I could respect that. If Donut wanted to sit on my lap while I was blasting away on PlayStation, then she sat on my damn lap. If I tried to pick her up, she hissed and scratched and jumped right back up there. And then she looked at me with a squished face that said, What're you gonna do about it?>I'd been tempted, more than once, to throttle the thing. But I'm not an asshole. Plus, I could respect the little monster's tenacity. Some of my buddies would give me crap about it, me spending all this time with a fuzzy cat that was probably worth more than I would make in a year, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed having that ball of fuzz sitting in my lap.Is there anyone who isn't a terminally online Reddit user that could possibly enjoy an entire book written in this fashion? Genuine question.
>>25516885this shit starts to make a lot more sense when you remember most people are idiots
>>25513521Speak English.
What compels someone to make a thread like this? In the old days, you would see an autistic schizo run a topic into the ground and that would be it. But not today. Today, when a schizo has worn out their welcome on a board and you think they are gone, they simply go to other boards and spam their threads there then come back to their home board and begin spamming once again. Here we see a shit book as a flimsy pretext to talk to himself about a shit manga which he has spammed endlessly for years. Why does he do this?
Why does /lit/ get so butthurt about Dinniman when there are so many worse authors out there? Compared to the shit in the "you might also like..." suggestions DCC might as well be Slaughterhouse Five.
I don't get the hate. Despite the cringey humor, it's competent genre fiction. Definitely the best in the LitRPG/Progression Fantasy/Isekai/whatever sphere, just by virtue of not being pure edgelordslop or powerfantasyslop and having consistent world logic and good escalation. It's best appreciated with contrast to other works in the subgenre, so you can realize how the author purposefully avoided the same traps and flaws.
This is the terminally online millennial male's equivalent to Harry Potter.
>I hate this book! It's so bad!>What? No, I haven't read it.>It's just bad! Because... uhhhh.... reddit?fuck the fans but you guys are retarded
>>25516774The gears behind how the dungeon works, and the background stuff of civil war, galactic politics macro and micro, bureaucracy, AI sentience, entertainment and tourism industry, classim/castism, corporatism and capitalism is genuinely great. It's really well done how he managed to weave them into the already neat approach to a LitRPG. I also really enjoy stories with creative-problem solving and lots of moving parts, moreso than the typical "OP powers of the MC melt everything".
It's just the new version of Ready Player One. Pure slop, honestly.>Look, okay, the first few books are a chore, but it REALLY gets good by book five!If a series sucks ass for the first five books, then it sucks ass as a whole. Fuck DCC, and every time someone recommends me this shit and says they think I'd like it, I get genuinely offended that they think my taste is so terrible, I'd read this trash. I'd rather read that book about farmgirls beating off minotaurs
>>25517337>>>25516774 #>The gears behind how the dungeon works, and the background stuff of civil war, galactic politics macro and micro, bureaucracy, AI sentience, entertainment and tourism industry, classim/castism, corporatism and capitalism is genuinely greatWhy do nitwit obsess over world building and lore? This is a literature board. Go to /v/ or something with the rest of the dumb normalfags.
>Muh.... TRAAAAAANIMEEEEEE!!!Fuck off to one of your containment boards or (preferably) kill yourself.
Totally not another marketer thread
>>25518167>off-topic newfag commentaryNothing about DCC is related to anime or transsexuality.
>>25518315Read the OP, dumbass. What the fuck do you think "Gantz" is? You blind fucking mouthbreather.
>>25518342>What the fuck do you think "Gantz" isEdgy garbage for 13 year olds?
>>25516885Somehow, this awful prose becomes tolerable when the guy who does the audiobook reads it. I guess it's in the delivery. When I read this in my head, all I can hear is the voice of a lisping manchild.
>>25517237>by virtue of not being pure edgelordslopare you fucking joking right now. all of dinniman's shit is weapons-grade edgeslop. it's one of the edgiest litrpgs I've read. I can't even think of one that's worse off the top of my head. maybe one of those chinese ones I don't read. reverend insanity or something? but I haven't read that one.
>>25515397It really is. At core, it's a Marxist book, with "Carl" ("Karl") leading the oppressed proletariat in a revolution against the oligarchy.Seriously, that's the schtick. Also see Dinniman's comments about "Operation Bounce House", which he has outright stated is "inspired" by le Drumpf admonsteristration's deportations of "undocumented migrants" aka illegal alien locust swarmers.>>25517237>Definitely the best in the LitRPG/Progression Fantasy/Isekai/whatever sphereNot even close. All of these are far better:The Perfect Run by Maxime J DurandBeware of Chicken by "Casualfarmer"Daniel Black series by E. William BrownI'd even say that the first two books of Super Sales on Super Heroes by William D. Arand were much better as pure litRPG (although he seems to have some sort of authorial ADHD where he can't just keep a plot going in one direction without throwing a whole herd of stupid "plot twist! they all got forced to switch to a new universe!" thing happening in every other fucking book). These are just a few I thought of offhand, if I dug through my collection I'd probably list even more that are far better than DCC. And I mostly don't even read those genres.
>>25518627i feel like its the same with joe abercombie. Pacey really sells the stories
>>25518706>At core, it's a Marxist bookshut up shut up shut up shut up shut up shut the fuck upThe Iron Heel by Jack London is a "Marxist novel". Mother by Maxim Gorky is a "Marxist novel." Dungeon Crawler Carl is fucking manchild genre slop that could only possibly be published or widely read in a debased hyper-consumerist culture. Stop affixing political labels you don't understand to everything you don't like you blabbering subhuman.
>>25518631It most definitely is not 'edgyslop'. You either haven't read much or have a very tame idea of edgy.>>25518706>Not even close. Arand were much better as pure litRPGCan you elaborate why?I am asking genuinely, I am interested in your opinion.>At core, it's a Marxist bookIt's more of a consequence of the situation following the natural path of the story and themes. I wouldn't consider Marxist specific or intentionally though.
it's far too humorous for my tastes. i like my slop to at least take itself and its characters seriously, which is why I liked Primal Hunter, but not this.
Does there really need to be a thread about DCC in the catalog at all times? There isn't anything left here to say about it. Find some other book to obsess over.
>>25517280>I hate shit it stinks! I know what it looks and smells like from a distance!>have you tried le shit? Maybe you will like the taste lots of people eat le shit! Do you think you are better then le them!?
>>25519300>You either haven't read much or have a very tame idea of edgy.the first scene of the book has most of humanity get killed while a woman's head is severed in front of the protagonist, and then he goes into a dungeon where he has to choke crying fat women to death while the NPCs also cry about how they're slaves as he kills them, he grinds one up them up into a smoothie and drinks it, retirees are murdered en mass while pissing and shitting themselves in public, an omniscient, gay, and otherwise sexually degenerate sadistic faux-AI berates and ridicules everyone through the whole thing, a non-AI announcer regularly mocks them while telling them to "kill! kill! kill!" each other, and so on in that vein throughout the whole seriesif you don't think that shit is edgy then YOU have a very skewed perception of what edgy means. list three examples of more edgy litRPGs
>>25519737You don't understand what edgy is. You have, like suspected, a tame idea of what it is.Edgy or rather how I first referred to it: edgelordslop. Is excessive and unnecessary death and violence presented as substance (and as "cool"), and the celebration of it. Especially in regards to the main character's delight in it as opposed to others' horror. It's, as people say: aurafarming and hype; but as a 13 year old emo might think. It is not death or violence merely existing. What is present in DCC is the setting itself, and it is presented as horror and inhumanity, as well as humor. It doesn't indulge, it portrays. You wouldn't consider a book about war be edgy because it shows plentiful death and injuries.
Reading through a lot of this it seems like a lot of people are huffing their own farts but sticking their head right up into the source.
>>25513521I hate how "safe edgy" is a millennial designation. even if I was part of the same gen, I was never "safe". That's why no one wanted to be around me back then.
>>25519749so you've redefined edgy to mean something other than what everyone in the world except yourself understands it to mean in order to """win""" the argument through being as obstinate and uncommunicative as possible. at least you're keeping the spirit of 4chan alive, I guessand yeah, DCC absolutely indulges and revels in the totally-not-edgy but in fact completely unnecessary and gratuitous sadism, gore, emotional abuse, and violence. dinniman even dedicates entire chapters just to unnecessarily psychologically torturing his characters (in absolute timewasting chapters that could be edited out of the book with no effect on the rest of the story, he obviously does this purely for love of the game), which incidentally he also does in his other books, where the violence and torture is also completely unnecessary to the story being told and is just gratuitous and there for its own sake.in conclusion, you are just fucking stupid
>>25519827And here I thought the contrasts of the cruelty the characters experience in the dungeon against the outside universe that considers it a game was kind of the central points in all of this.
>>25516955because there's genuinely so little worse out there than Dinniman. it makes Ready Player One look like fucking Shakespeare
Am I the only anon here who read them all and thinks they're...fine? Didn't go in expecting Dostoevsky from a book series about a guy with a talking cat playing games for aliens. I thought I'd really hate them since I'm over fucking isekai but ended up enjoying them.
>>25517237>it's competent genre fictionTHE FUCK IT IS.Since spite is a great motivator, I have just finished dragging myself through all eight books, because I wanted to be able to point out to the fucking retards who swear by this series exactly where and how DCC is shit. Writing-wise, plot-wise, character-wise, any single part of it is a fuming pile of crap.No joke, DCC literally makes me doubt my fellow man and depresses me to no end. Sure there's much more important and worse things happening every waking day, but for me it is a devastating look into the abyss of how uncurious and self-congratulatory people can be and that literally makes me feel sad.
>>25520014i always respect haters who consume the media they hate so they can hate better. godspeed anon
>>25520014What parts did you hate the least?
>>25519808It has nothing to do with Gantz either. OP is a typical newfag throwing around buzzwords and terms he doesn't understand.
>>25520014>I read the books>unable to describe anything from the booksGo back to /v/, lil' tyke.
>>25520072FUCK OFF CUNT>The writing is shitLet's start with the narrator. Dinniman chose Carl's POV, which fine, I guess. And then he wants to have his cake and eat it too. Apart from when he has no idea how to touch a plot point from Carl's perspective, in which case he randomly shifts to other characters' third-person narration (but fine I guess), he then fucks up the whole point of a first-person POV. The readers are Carl, they know what he knows and they follow whatever shit is happening. Carl is literally the entire point of reference that the readers have to relate to the in-universe world. So - first book, so it's not like he's used the dungeon's mechanics and feelings - when Carl says "I felt my strength increase by 50%", WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT EVEN SUPPOSED TO MEAN, DINNIMAN? What is the feeling of your strength instantly increase by 50%? What is that even conveying to me, the reader, about the world, except "eh EH vIdeOgaME fUn". Tell me you felt a tingle and you saw the number go up, so I'm conveyed the means to interpret what's happening. The way he wrote it down means SHIT.Also, every single plan and plot is written like: "And then I planned the thing" [no explanation, and then many chapters later] "And then I did the thing I planned", and characters CONSTANTLY say shit like "That thing we discussed", "That item I gave you" and so on. Which has NO PURPOSE except manufacturing suspance. Which again is bullshit given the POV. The reader is in Carl's head, so the entire point is knowing what he knows and discovering shit along with him. You want to surprise the reader? The n surprise Carl. You want Carl to plan shit without the reader knowing? Then don't put the POV in his head and then have EVERYBODY behave misteriously towards close friends with whom they are planning life-or-death situationts, just to force a shitty sense of suspance.
>>25520072FUCK OFF CUNT>The writing is shitAlso, the book is full of "When-I-grow-up-I-want-to-be-a-real-writer" shit. For example, Dinniman CONSTANTLY uses WHAT a character is to avoid repeating the character's name in his narration (because pronouns are hard, I guess). Stuff like> "Donut said [whatever], then the cat jumped off the table"which is entirely amateurish, completely unnatural, and if we want to get into it (we want), we're back to the POV issue because Carl - in the way his character is presented - would never refer to Donut as "the cat". A third-person narration would be fine, it's a cat, so let's call it that. But when you put the narration in the character brain, you have to filter it through the character's trait. Which Dinniman is not capable to do.On a similar note, he (again, like in babby's-first-writing-exercise) CONSTANTLY finds roundabout ways to repeat shit with different terms, so in the span of ten lines, the same characters "get near a table", "approach the bench" and "surround the desk", which again is amateurish as fuck and absolutely unnatural.>The characters are shitHe can't keep them straight, and their characterization and actions swing wildly depending on whatever he needs them to be doing: they're just absurdly badass without a worry in the world until the moment arrives to manufacture drama and depth, they have a sad woobie moment so Dinniman can just dump two pages of rough-but-inspiring purple prose, then they're back to joking and hamming it up. Pick a fucking lane you dipshit.>The plot is shitNothing specifically bad with the premise. But since he's not capable of delivering it through the means that he has chosen for doing it, he piles half a dozen or more exposition-devices on top of each other: Mordecai, the System AI, the Cookbook, every lawyer and liason, their only purpose is to loredump pages and pages of things that Carl "needs to know" and Dinniman doesn't know how to make him learn otherwise
>>25520072FUCK OFF CUNT>The fans are shitLowest common denominator retards who can only enjoy shit through the bottom-feeding ability of "being-in-on-the-joke", thus being part of the "community in the know" thus buying an identity through a convenient purchase on audibles. It's fucking Funko Pops. Because the only reason they can postpone facing the complete emptiness and arrested development of every part of their being is being able to catch "Anyway this is Wonderwall" and make a guffaw sound in the loneliness of their pop-culture-poster-laden-twin-sized-bed-rented-bedroom. And yet they can't grasp or accept how uncurious and absolutely vile the whole thing is, so they bend themselves backwards to prop up this fuming pile of shit as "anti-capitalist" and "inspiring" and "revolutionary". No, you dumb fucking pieces of shit, literally every hero story is about the downtrodden against the powerful big bad, this time is a corporation. DCC is not more anti-capitalist than, say, Vin Diesel's Bloodshot where the baddie is a guy wanting to make more money. Or I dunno, Die Hard since Hans Gruber wants to steal money. Carl is a milquetoast hero protagonist against all odds, there's been thousands of him and there will be thousands of him after DCC. Stop pretending the slop on which you prop up your personhood is in any way meaningful, you self-congratulating assholes. And they love the lore dumps, because they have no capacity to imagine, to assume, to figure out, they need everything pre-mulched for them and they pretend (or believe) that that is depth.>The writer is shitHe made bank, good for him. But the fact that the made it, he struck gold, he won the lottery, and he didn't stop an instant to re-evaluate his work and try to make it better, but thought "I got money, so what I do must be good" and doubled down on everything that makes the books bad (more lore-dumps, more half-assed characters, more convoluted over-plots, more lolrandum), it makes me despise him to no end
Oh sorry, I didn't want to actually discuss the books. I just wanted you to tell me I'm heckin based for consuming slop all day and shitting up your board. This isn't going the way I intended so I'm going to slide half the catalogue with shitty threads now. My time is valuable so I can't commit to literature, but I spend 20 hours a day here making the board unusable for everyone.
>>25519991Nah I'm enjoying it too. Doing audiobook tho. This type of fiction is good for audiobooks. Really helps with chores and long drives.Anyway I think people here seem to just be wet blankets. Squares. It's entertainment. It doesn't have to be deep and thought provoking. Doesn't have to have some underlying message or some deep subtextual commentary on things. It just has to be competently constructed and conveyed as the entertainment it is. And so far it seems to be.Some people are just so desperate to appear smart and deep and somehow better than others in some weird way that doesn't matter. That's what I think a lot of these complaints are.
>>25520038Some parts of it are fun, some "Oh shit can't believe that worked" moments are fun, some character moments are okay, if a bit overdone. There's SOMETHING in there, it's just that everything is submerged in so much shit that it doesn't really come through. You know what it feels like?Your average thursday-night-D&D-game. The plot is confusing and half-assed, you're missing basically all the clues, which are bullshit clues anyway because the DM is not a mistery writer, but it's okay and you're doing it for fun and company. And everybody tries to talk like they talk in the movies, but nobody really can and everybody is cringy, but again that's okay you're just having fun. And apart from that, you're really shooting the shit so you mostly have fun by fucking shit up, you're not really following any narrative progression or character arc, and when you do it is derivative and overdone as shir but again, none of you is a writer so that's okay. And the lore is meandering and non-sensical because it is assembled from a hundred things the DM has read and smushed together, you can clearly see that the BBEG is X-Men's Apocalypse and that one water genie they talkes to is Ursula, but again who cares. And since everythins is kind of a mess, the only way to make sense of it and point your party to the next killing spree is more-or-less-overt loredumpint NPC. And you all have inside jokes and scream WAAAAAATSUUUUUUUP when you meet the king, that'hilarious. Anybody with a modicum of ttrpg experience can relate to that. But guess what, that works exactly because it's people around a table. You port it in book form? It becomes unreadable shit.
>>25520291>Really helps with chores and long drivesHow in the world is this discussion worthy
>>25520310Hate is worth discussing.Being able to unravel your hate and argue about what makes it so, makes loving things much more meaningful
These books are perfectly adequate if you don't pay attention to them. I listen to them while I wash my penis so I don't have to think about how boring I am. This will soon change, however, as I am installing a TV on my shower wall, so I never have to seperated from Rick and Morty again. I will never leave though, as ressentiment demands that I take you all down a peg. Every source of light must be completely extinguished.
>>25520277>He can't keep them straight, and their characterization and actions swing wildly depending on whatever he needs them to be doing: they're just absurdly badass without a worry in the world until the moment arrives to manufacture drama and depth, they have a sad woobie moment so Dinniman can just dump two pages of rough-but-inspiring purple prose, then they're back to joking and hamming it up. Pick a fucking lane you dipshit. This might just be you only having interacted with autistic people. Most people are not consistent and these people are in what's basically a war zone.Carl comments on how being in the dungeon is affecting him and how he sees it in other characters and how he notices when Donut is putting on a front. The breakdown moments are not character inconsistency it's people going through some rough shit.Real life examples are soldiers. That one guy in the squad that's cracking jokes while bullets are flying and artillery is raining down...a real tough dude that's unbothered by it all right? Well that same guy when he gets home is going to get tazed by some cops outside of an Applebee's because a loud noise made him lose his shit and now he's crying and pissing himself. Pretty damn inconsistent of that character they had while in a war zone eh?
>>25520310Oh do you just sit statically staring off into space when you use an audiobook?
>>25520382I don't use audio books at all. I also frequently dodge my responsibilities to pursue my interests. I'll toss it all in to keep the fire burning. My penis remains unwashed.
I have nothing of value to add but Signet's character turns me on, and not just because she's a horrifying fish woman.
>>25520358Real life doesn't make narrative sense, it's just a series of scattered moments tied by the continuative flow of a person's existence. I don't care that it's rEAliStiC (which is not), as a book it's just random shit happening. Let's just have Carl have a stroke and die, then. Since it can happen in real life, that makes it good storytelling. Maybe if it was some highly experimental piece of writing it would make sense in context, but it's not. These bitches do Christmas parties and karaoke nights and then switch on the drama for one scene, because DEEP, and switch it off again because following up on that would be challenging and inconvenient to write.See Katia: >"Oh no, she's spiraling into dungeon drug addiction!">"NVM, we'll buff the withdrawal out of her, then we'll have a scene in which she's BIG SAD again because she couldn't adopt a wittle baby with brain cancer, then we'll be done with that too
>>25520267>the concept of shifting POVs is objectively wrong!>the concept of storytelling is objectively wrong! One must explain things directly, practically, realistically, and in chronological order!>>25520277>the concept of prose is objectively wrong!>characters must be rigid and one-dimensional and not differ from their first appearance!>worldbuilding is wrong!Exposition and explanation is the only real criticism, and he does overdo it.>>25520282>fans are!!!Irrelevant to the book, you fucking imbecile.>I don't understand themes, ideology, and subtext!!!!! You have a poor grasp on English as well. You are a speed-reader. You possess an IQ of sub-100. You fail to understand even the fundamentals of writing and storytelling in general. You do not possess 'logic', you possess underdeveloped emotional regulation, and lacking mental facilities. You haven't come up with a single coherent reasonable point or critique.I can't believe people are getting *filtered* by Dungeon Crawler Carl out of all things. This is insane. It's not even a difficult book or a particularly great one. But I guess there is no task too daunting for the expertly stupid.
