I've realized that most of my reading has been spent on fiction or history works. What books would you recommend if I actually want to learn practical things and develop useful skills?

It entirely depends on what you're interested in. There are practical how-to books on just about anything you can imagine and they're pretty easy to find. If you want to develop practical skills that will help you get ahead in life, by far the most useful are strategic thinking and language skills, and those are learned by... reading history and fiction.
