I think the issue with many self insert characters is that they have zero flaws. they are not really "self insert" as they are more idealized version of the author without any of their faults. It's all about understanding what words mean naturally. You just need to read a lot.
"self insert" is not a very literary thing except in stuff like YA or fan fiction; definitely get closer to these >>25517306 >>25517314 (i'd also add pessoa for an interesting way of playing with self, no pun intended)
