>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

>Well, it's technically almost impossible to prove, no matter how obvious it looks. Falsely accusing someone could turn into a court case so nobody wants to take the risk, however small

This is gets close to why criticism needs to move away from "dis is da ebil EY-EYE" and into "this reads like LLM output AND it has all these other problems that make it unenjoyable." The latter gets to the heart of the problem, which isn't some tired argument about preserving artists' paychecks for mediocre output; rather, it's about how the text is just bad.

Sometimes it won't be LLM output, truthfully and honestly. But even in those cases, the prose is usually stilted and trite and has an annoying cadence and structure to it that merits criticism anyway, and that's damning enough. The only possible downside is that people start writing in new awkward ways to avoid being called AI but oh well, maybe some authors will find a unique voice.

As for court cases, who cares? Honestly if that happens you can settle out of court for an apology in 99.99% of cases. Proving damages is nearly impossible on top of the impossibility of proving the negative "I DIDN'T use LLM." Calling something AI is almost completely legally equivalent to "this sucks and I didn't like it." Rather, I've seen reluctance to accuse of AI because other artists don't want to ruin the grift of their artist buddies. If someone's reputation gets ruined by an accusation and it's NOT true, they (artists) see that as a bad thing and THEN there can be blowback within the artist community specifically.

Any rec's for Academy stories?

A couple of reviews for other stories
Quest Academy
This was pretty fun, I liked the characters. It was definitely going to be a harem series until the author got pushback and its better for it. It does a good job setting up character archetypes so you can remember who's who which is hard with this many characters. Biggest pet peave is you have to ignore timeframes completely or the story doesnt make any sense, MC has the typical "works harder than anybody else" mindset and manages to revolutionise concepts within about a week. You dont really need both and I think the progression is happening too quickly.

Iron Prince
How the fuck is this only 2 books in when the quality is so ass? I DNF'd after book 1 because there's too much fighting and not enough character development. Progression is just sparring over and over, there's too many fights between generic background characters. The progression systems pretty bare bones, very obvious the MC was going to get the "has all the powers" move set. Again has the problem that the MC is getting too good too quickly so it wont make sense for any of the currently introduced characters to remain part of the plot much longer unless they also get some bullshit ability to speed up their development.

Honestly no. It's the isekai-slop of gookshit. From the around two-three dozens I've read they've all had shit Translations even terrible plot, pacing and characters. Academy stories are often times only decent enough in Manhwa form as you tighten prose/plot/pacing.

The only one I can actually remember from the top of my head is
>The Academy's Undercover Professor
And the web novel is absolutely shit while the manhwa was decent
>>
>>25520028
>The Academy's Undercover Professor

When I read some western WNs I get the ick. I don't always know what it is, but something about the story smells like DEI. It's usually not obvious like it is in movies, but a few lines here or there give me this feeling.

Eg:
>More than once, Gary had to interpose himself to shield another craftsperson, getting hammered into the ground for his trouble.
Lots of "craftspeople" in the same book as well.

I only get this feeling from some stories though and it shatters the illusion of what I'm reading. Others, like Max Level Archmage don't give me this feeling at all, even though it's a femc story where the entire main cast is women.

Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

It's not exactly an academy story, but it has elements of it.

It's not fully an academy story either, but so far it revolves around the academy. The title is the worst part of this story.

I mean, dungeon core is all built off of the bones of games like dungeon keeper and the general base defense sub-genre.
For my other, its initial inspirations was The Dragon and The George (Also known as The Flight of Dragons for the animated version) and Stranger Than Fiction.
>>
>>25520229
Well, I admit it's a tough setting and most stories in it are pure shit. The Returner's Magic Should be Special takes place almost entirely in an academy and is one of my all-time favorites. Academy's Genius Swordmaster and Revenge of the Iron-Blooded Swordhound are decent dumb fun and I'm still following them, though the academy in them is more just a backdrop.

Anons might like Academy's Genius Blinker. I dropped it early on because even short-distance warping is so op bullshit, I couldn't believe a decent story can come from it. But it does have a lot of fans. Infinite Mage is also praised a lot and the manhwa had nice art, though I dropped it because it was fucking gaaaaay
>>
>>25520271
I get you. It's really annoying when people tie themselves into a knot to use weird words and it's hella common in western WNs. I'm not even anti-woke, I thought the pronoun joke on Clara Casewell was funny, but that was more because it fit the character. If it smells like the author is being preachy I just jump right out

>>Well, I admit it's a tough setting and most stories in it are pure shit.
Yes, there is pretty much nothing actual good to recommend here, just various degrees of maybe average if you're lucky. Or just go loosely Academy adjacent like >>25520287. In that case I'll give another vote for Mother of Learning but I'd wager most have already read it.

Otherwise I'd almost unironically recommend Harry Potter and the methods of rationality if we're dead set on an Academy setting web series.

>>The Returner's Magic Should be Special
>>is one of my all-time favorites
I hope you mean only as Academy story or maybe Manhwa as the WN is trash tier writing, half of it reads like wordpadding or thinly veiled mc glazing from the narrator. Also why the fuck do you have a commoner vs evil noble Academy setting where commoners are grouped into one class and arent really expected to graduate, why the fuck are they even there? The author isnt even bothering with the setting at all. Manhwa slop it is.

>>Academy's Genius Swordmaster
>>Revenge of the Iron-Blooded Swordhound

I'll check them out, though probably only Manwha as I have no faith anymore.

Is this the one also called Academy's flashing Genius or something? If so then yeah it sounds like a dumb as shit premise and I've never seen any reasonable good review of it. Feels like I've seen this series around a million times along with the another Academy series where the MC is misunderstood to be blind or something that also has no reasonable good reviews.

It used to be possible, but there's too much AI slop, too much meta-gaming via networking-shoutout-tomfoolery, and too much public attention now for such a casual approach to work.

>>
old bai, do you still remember imperial court blessed land?
>>
>>25520878
No because that's not how the Rising Stars algorithm works. "Organic" growth is too slow to make the main list. However you can hit lesser lists, mainly obscure tags like comedy or satire.
>>
>>25520984
>add in vague comedy and satire elements to game the tags

>>
>>25520989

>>
>>25520994
>They aren't on the frontpage
RS drives a lot of traffic outside of front page? did you mean "main"?
>Only rising stars matters
So, there's actually some nuance. Global filters work on every page and so while top 50 default is the biggest driver, some people use tags like [Female Lead] only, and so you can be #200 and still be hitting a fairly large chunk of FMC readers on the main Rising Stars page still. Tags do matter, just not in the way he suggested

Though the way they found the target of their escort quest was hilarious.
>>
>>25521388
The MC goes into the menu and turns off the system's UI and notifications before the system can explain the special currency that only he has access to.
"Fuck tutorials. Fuck pay 2 win shit."
So now, as the MC navigates the world, he keeps collecting this currency, which should've made him super OP, without realizing it or ever using it.
This endlessly pisses off the god who brought the MC to this world. He talked mad shit to the other gods and bet his divinity that his apostle was superior to theirs.
"If the other gods knew my apostle was doing all this without my help, they'd make fun of me for the rest of eternity! Just open the goddamn menu, you mortal piece of shit!"
>>
>>25521567
Make him a raging "non-genre savvy" 'tist like Isekai Ojisan for it to be more "believable" and I'd read it. Otherwise it's just: Why the fuck would anyone that is slightly reasonable and in a cultivation or similar world give up a free "cheat"? No, being a f2p enjoyer is not a strong enough reason to me and would be extremely hard to suspend my disbelief for a dumb gimmick.
>>
>>25521567
>god who brought the MC to this world.
Brainwashed godcuck can't take a step forward without his shitty trope.
>>
ALL fantasy stories, wng or not, rpg or not, isekai or not, suffer from the Chosen One trope, that only MC is The Special One or has That Special Power
it's a cheap and shallow way to give the MC an edge over the rest of the world

works if you're writing children's lit, but not otherwise
(and even then Dumbledore takes pains to point out to Harry Potter that it was up to him to take up the challenge, or not)
>>
>>25521567
>>25521586
See, this is why I figured that making a snarky AI "companion" would be the easiest way. MC tries to turn it off when it starts chirping at him in the middle of a fight, winds up deleting the system guide entirely because they're intertwined, and now has no clue what most of his stats do, no descriptions of his skills, and no free tutorials zapped straight into his brainpan. Scale the ignorance back as required by the author.

It's meta and shit. You'll get a bunch of comments going "wow the author must have read [insert novel here] and not liked it!" The problem's making it into an advantage, really. Could go with the old cliche of "you've got skills but you don't understand what they do, they're just shortcuts".
>>
>>25521591
I'll agree that this is true for an overwhelming majority of fantasy. System or isekai-shit however brings this to whole new cringe levels of self-insert wish fulfilment, a la Gary Stu. Gook-slop and chink-shit somehow and unironically spend an inordinate amount of time and wordpadding on plainly glazing the MC without any substance, telling us how unique he is. I'm impressed the authors themselves even have the stomach to write it at all.

>>25521592
>snarky AI "companion"
This or just plain "unreasonable" quests. Works if for example shit glitched out and MC was dropped into a "high-level zone" instead of beginner village or by accident tried to say challenge a young master per a beginner quest.

If we go by the plot that it's a god that bestowed it there really is no reason for it be snarky at all. I guess if the god delegated the implementation to an "intern" or lower god (with a terrible/narcissistic personality such as Aqua) it would be reasonable. But we do run into the actual problem, what is the actual plot beyond the gimmick? Is the system going to be relevant at all or would it just have been better to cut it from the beginning? Are you just going to get a shitton of comments where people complain that when is the MC going to turn on the system, etc? For a raging 'tistic MC we have no problem. It is at that point more interesting to the reader how the author is going to creatively tackle any obstacles/challenges for the MC and what dumbass route he will take.

Plot? Son, this is for a litrpg. We don't need a plot as long as we've got a dungeon to throw the MC into, or any kind of baddie lurking in the distance or whatever.

But yeah, you're right. You'd get those kinds of comments unless you repeatedly stated that there was no way to get the guide back and made it clear that it never had been anything except a detriment.

Come to think of it, that might be it. Have the AI "guide" actually be a program added in-universe to monitor everyone's progress and make sure they're steered away from socially maligned builds or those that are a threat to the world's ruling elite. MC's the only one who got annoyed enough to delete it and accidentally slips away from the tracking.

Have that intersect with a broader rebellion theming, maybe, and you could build a story around that.

>If I remember correctly I had two actual followers & a bunch of people who dipped in for the advance chapters and then unsubbed again.
I've never understood this. I keep hearing RR writers saying people subscribe to them for like a week or so and then leaving only to come back months later. I assume it's because they don't like where the story is going and then come back when their discord friends tell them it took a turn for the better? So bizarre. I've never been able to afford being some detached to money...
>What's the point of all these questions, anyway?
I want to be a paid author and live off my creativity (rather than grueling work) just like my literary heroes <3
>>
>>25521685
>I assume it's because they don't like where the story is going
I don't think so. I imagine it's because they want to do a one-time purchase of the advance chapters, which holds up for the rest of the month, and if they feel like it the next month they'll resub. That way they'll feel like they've got more control over where their money goes, while otherwise they might still be subbed to a Patreon they don't read anymore.

Eh, I don't know if it's just because I find system/LitRPG to be shit but this doesn't really sound that interesting to me, mainly because now the setting is system dominant. Isn't there a somewhat popular series called something akin to "Everyone has a system except me" that people did find enjoyable? Can't remember if it has a manga as well or if it's WN only.

Reminds me somewhat of cultivation series overall and their cultivating against the heavenly courts/emperor or whatever. I think LitRPG/system veiled cultivation like Defiance of the Fall also have the possibility to cultivate parallel or against the system in its setting.

Make it a goddess, and make her an arrogant Aqua type who had her one divine beast (slave) handle the system installation. She’s also the annoying voice the MC immediately turned off.
“Why the hell did you even add a mute option?! How am I supposed to explain the system to him now, huh?!”
“Ack! G-Goddess, please… please calm down… Gasp! We still have the text message function…”
The MC turns off the UI.
“Die!”
“Goddess, mercy! Mercy!”
“Hmph! Screw it. I’ll go down there and beat some sense into that idiotic mortal myself!”
“But, Goddess, the bet…”
“Nobody will know unless you talk. So shut it!”
The goddess turns to leave, but a voice stops her.
“And where do you think you’re going, little sister?”
“You?! I-I was just…”
“Were you perhaps taking a stroll? Hmm? Didn’t you say today was the day you would send your chosen hero into my world? How did you describe him? Oh, yes. You claimed your hero was so powerful that he could overcome any challenge I threw at him without you having to lift a finger. You even bet your divinity on it. Hehehe.”
“Tch!”
“Just now, you weren’t planning to go down there and aid your hero, were you? You do realize that would break our agreement. And your pretty little divinity will be mine.”
The goddess shudders.
“Of course not! There’s no way I’d do something that dumb!”
“Surely not. Hehehe. Now, let’s head back and watch your hero’s progress, shall we? My darling followers should reach him soon. I’m sure they won’t pose too much of a challenge.”
*Gulp.*
And so the goddess can only watch as her “hero” stumbles his way across a new world without a single cheat to aid him.
“Oh my. He’s quite good. You sure know how to pick them, sister.”
“Ha! What did I tell you? Haha… ha…”
“By the way, what gift did you bestow upon him?”
“Hiss… Th-that is for me to know and for you to find out!”
“Stingy. Oh well. You wouldn’t mind if I increased the difficulty level, would you? Too late. I’m sending a dragon his way now.”
(Damn you, divine beast. I’ll skin you for this!)

No, you fucking schizo, they just want to binge several months' stock of chapters in one go and don't want to pay for nothing while waiting for the content to build up.

Then there are also fucking retarded authors who offer like 200 advance chapters. Of course anyone sane will sub once, read those 200 chapters, cancel immediately, and only resub when there's another batch of 200 chapters available. Otherwise you're not getting what you pay for.

This is the minority audience on Patreon by nature
Most income comes from people who keep up to date, not binge readers
People who are okay with binging usually don't subscribe at all, they catch up to public and then go read the next story

One thing I’ve always wondered about patreon is what happens if the story is short? Maybe a 100-chapter story that gets completed on patreon within 3 months. What then?
Does the writer go, “Alright guys. That’s a wrap. There won’t be any more chapters so you can unsubscribe now.”
Would people feel betrayed for subbing to something so short or would they go tffs and move on?
>>
>>25521967
Depends entirely how the story is written and what expectations it gives the readers. Personally I'd assume such an author would probably start or hint towards their next story before the first one ends if that's what they're going for. Up to the author to set the right expectations.
>>
>>25521967
Paypiggies get cucked all the time, subbing for stories that end in under 10 chapters. They're used to being raped in the ass and either keep on throwing their money into the void politely or else move on to be raped by somebody else.
>>
>>25521967
You can either start a next story when the previous one ends, or just be transparent with your readers and say this is the only story you plan to write, it'll be about ~100 chapters long and have a satisfying ending, and when it's done it's done.

My story is also on the shorter end (it's gonna be less than 200 chapters total) and I've already let my readers know. I don't really plan to do another story after it, and if I don't, then I'll just close my Patreon when I finish and thank everyone who supported it.

>>
>>25521591
The solution is to have another character be the chosen one that the biggest plot revolves around and make the meat of the story about a "side" character protagonist who deals in smaller scale problems.

Banished From the Hero's Party does this with the protagonist's sister being the Hero, while the MC is the Guide who goes on to live a slow life on the edge of the world. So you can have a fantasy world, even native fantasy, without having too much "chosen one" bullshit.

I'm pretty sure it's this. I can see in my emails when the same person subscribes multiple times and I've got about a dozen people on their third or fourth subscription. They just sub, wait a while, then cancel. I assume they're practicing good sub hygiene by regularly going through a list of their active subscriptions and purging the unimportant ones so that they don't wind up wasting money on something they don't use all the time (I forgot to unsub from midjourney for like three months like an idiot).

I try not to let it bother me, but it does in fact bother me to see people unsubscribe. That said, I rarely get negative comments so at worst I'm just boring people into leaving, which is bad but not impossible to recover from. I assume they leave and remain followed on RR.

How do you share enriched writing anonymously these days? And I specify "enriched" because most sites I know are either devoid of format (even removing line breaks) or code-oriented.

NTA
Read first few pages, this prose could totally succeed if the story is good. It's not especially good and not especially bad, so the story is what matters
I will say however that the less "slop" (genre-popular, e.g. litrpg cultivation) your story is, the better the prose needs to be. And the prose is pretty lackluster if you're targeting the more trad 10% of webfic readers, so the crab isn't entirely wrong, I guess, though he's severely overstating his case
>>
>>25522886
You can look down on the unwashed masses all you want, but you have to remember that you're writing for them, not yourself.
Readers have certain expectations, especially genre readers, about how a story should play out and how it should be written. If you can't meet those expectations, they'll simply move on to the thousands of other options available to them online.
>>
>>25522909
>you're writing for them, not yourself.
you should be writing for both imo, and only if you're trying to make money, otherwise write for yourself

I mostly just read WNs/LNs, I've wanted to try writing one but never had the gusto. Have written fanfiction though. Years of it, even.

Story is in-media-res, if you want setting details I left them in the notes at the bottom. Felt a bit too melodramatic and whiny for my tastes though, if I actually wrote a WN I think I'd make the main character a deranged pervert, maybe even a sex criminal.
>>

>>25522895
>And the prose is pretty lackluster if you're targeting the more trad 10% of webfic readers, so the crab isn't entirely wrong
Yeah, I figured the writing wouldn't be good enough. It's fine, I'll see what I can improve as I go, I don't feel particularly upset or attached to the being criticized because, again, I gave it my best shot, so I can't be mad. I will try to do something about it, though, don't get me wrong, the last thing I want is people backing out because they couldn't stomach the writing, like the next anon.
>>
>>25522964
>you're disingenuous if you think anyone cares about the trad audience here
from my experience (as someone who's been here since the creation of /wng/) most anons read the more trad stuff, the people talking about litrpg are in the minority
though the cultivation/translated-works have taken over more recently, admittedly.

this is also completely unrelated to the actual matter at hand, which is that a trad audience does exist and pretending you should always pursue the most popular style is "best". by that logic we should all be writing romantasy or romance or erotica.
just a completely incoherent worldview
so, yes: you're just stupid
>>
>>25522958

>You wore me out with the purple prose in the synopsis that didn't mean anything, and two sentences that barely parsed.
I don't know what "purple prose" is supposed to mean, but if it makes you feel any better, the synopsis was vague on purpose... I just didn't want to bother cause I'm using AO3 as a posting archive until I make the jump to a proper WN site. That said, sorry to hear you didn't stick around for the rest of the story.
>What's your birth tongue? Why don't you just write in that?
>He figured out I'm an ESL
Dammit...! I knew someone was going to notice lmao.
Trust me, birth tongue or not, it wouldn't make too much of a difference, sadly. That said, I do find english easier to write in more fun, and I believe its good practice in the long run, in and out of storytelling.

the trad reader audience is people reading stuff like worm, apgte, apgts, katalepsis, etc, all frequently talked about here (well, again: more in the past than nowadays, it's mostly chinese spam here now)
more recent releases: super supportive, elf dragon, lots of magical girl stories, so on
it's much rarer to see successes in this category but pretending they don't exist is braindead. litrpg/cultivation is dominant but the less common 10% of a large audience is still meaningful, esp. if you aren't trying to make a million dollars like the next Primal Hunter lmao

By nature they are less common, I already said that. But they exist, and new ones are coming out too. Arguably Max Level Archmage fits the premise, it's non-progression and only litrpg-at-first-glance in the same way SS is. It's clearly a tag abuser fiction
I don't think such stuff is dying out. It just takes longer to filter up in most cases. Works like those spread by word of mouth and that takes time, but chugs along in a way the usual flash-in-a-pan 4k stock standard litrpg can't

Since genres and sub-genres can't actually die because there's always going to be someone producing them, dying has to be measured in terms of total output of that "industry". I don't think you're quite wrong, but I am still going to disagree, mainly because I know first hand what it means to do creative work for the sake of an audience and learned that I, for one, will write for myself and those willing to read my stuff because that is how it works for me in drawing (and fanfic writing, really). Not to say I wont adapt to conventions and meet some expectations, but if I start focusing solely on an audience and forget about myself I'm only going to lose sight of things and my passion for writing will take a toll... which would suck major ass losing my passion for arts AGAIN for the exact same reason. Right now I just want to make my project and if some people catch it, its my win.

I'm glad someone found it funny. As for your prose it's fine for webfiction I think. It mostly doesn't get in the way of imagining what's happening. At least for me, dunno about the average reader. Though I did skim through the combat like I usually do. I believe them being bandit rapists is kind of cliche and more importantly it's not as compelling for her characterization when she kills them compared to if she had killed a lone mugger. Most people don't care bout killing rapists at least during the actual act.

Why is it completely impossible for anons to write a synopsis that makes any sense or describes the story? It WILL lose you readers and earn bad ratings.
>>
>>25523286
Writing a synopsis is a skill, part of marketing more broadly. It's not the same thing as writing a good story, although I think it's much easier to learn. It's just not something anons put much time into.

I didn't realize how imoprtant it was until I got to a table at a convention and had someone ask me what my book was about and I immediately spilled my spaghetti everywhere and gave a terrible answer. For the following hour I was VERY motivated to figure out a good elevator pitch. Prior to that I simply didn't care because I never was forced to convince someone to give it a shot in less than twenty seconds. Family and friends entertained my rambling for at least a few minutes out of politeness.

False. Write a bad synopsis that misrepresents the story and actually get some readers. You are guaranteed to get a lot of passionate feedback telling you the story is not what the summary promised.

Of course, if the description is incomprehensible gibberish then no one can refer to it but has to look at the tags. But countless will be filtered.

"Is author in a format full of pantsers a pantser?"

Yes odds are that, like literally every other novel that blew up, the author had one, maybe two volumes actually planned out at most and has been winging it since.
>>
>>25522743
My fellow ESL, dont used modern english in speech in what feels like medieval setting. Instead of chick use something like lass or wench. Midsection could be gut. Prose is rough, but not particularly in the way, just some sentence structure and word choices are a bit odd. But story could be interesting, she seems a little OP straight from the get go, but I'm not sure how her powers work to really comment.
>>
>>25522743
Are you the same person from a couple of threads ago that asked about ideas for a good-religion setting to contrast the common evil cult ones?

Speaking as a reader only, I'd say the issue with the prose is mostly that it has the same quality as purple prose. It has a tone/quality that is in line with something that is highly emotional/dramatized/romanticized, and to me here, it feels mostly unsubstantiated because we have seen nothing of it yet. Worse to me is the tone is pretty highly strung this way throughout. We can normally constantly see this same problem in AI-writing, a continuous high tension tone without any actual substance behind it. We see very few shorter, neutral or other descriptions to contrast the high/wonderous description of things. It reads almost like a fever dream or like painting with only neon colors.

We are introduced to and expected to emphasize with a highly dramatized scene where I'd assume most readers, at least myself have not yet emphasized with the work at all. If this were to have been the peak of an arc, or plot beat a bit later in the story, it would probably have worked much better (with a bit of rework) and felt more substantiated/natural but here it just feels forced. To me this reads like romantasy and I would normally have dropped it a couple of paragraphs in. Many sentences alone can be great but the combined usage of them is just purple prose.

I would like to add that the fight/bandit-rapists scene is a bit to cliched so you lower the expectation of what we are to expect from the story, some form of cliched melodrama where the MCs head is in the stars?

Further for the fight scene I'd also add a bit more emphasis in the text that she is using her blessing/magical strength at the beginning of the fight itself (the only indication as far as I remembered was "invoking her strength" or something) to give a clearer picture that she is fighting against multiple male bandits with her form of magic and not physical strength alone. But the bandit scene itself feels forced and dumb, we have drunk(?) bandit-rapists that attack this girl (knowing she is probably an acolyte) and they do not immediately restrict her movements hard at the first opportunity they get, at some moments she's not even resisting. This is rape 101.

Lastly a nitpick but I feel like you overemphasize or reiterate some descriptors in the same form a bit too much like "the stars" and "acolyte", even though I do assume it is a great part of her religion and her mentality. This contributes to the whole overdramatized/romantasy feeling.

I'll note that the idea, setting or execution is not even all that bad but it hits too many clusters of "red flags" that signal even worse patterns later. Usually a form of storytelling where the world revolves around any particular emotional beat (neon colors) that can commonly be seen in or lead to forced romance drama in a romance series. A typically common form of storytelling with a fMC.

>>25522743
mate, I read the first paragraph and I was immediately turned off
too purple, too emotional, not enough description of what was actually going on, I didn't want to bother any further

this is such a common problem that I suggest an exercise for all of you trying your hand at this. go take your favourite novel, go to Chapter 1, or your favourite chapter, get two highlighters and highlight how much of the chapter is DESCRIPTION of the surroundings and what is happening, and how much is the INNER THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS of the character. also count the number of words in the chapter, and count the number of "purple words" and figure out the percentage.

I enjoyed the first section where he's reflecting on things until he reincarnates/awaken, it had a fun tone to it. The interactions after where a bit odd however, particularly where he remembers that June was killed there. It felt really forced. We have a sense that he has regressed/timelooped a lot of times already and to me it makes no sense that he doesn't have an almost "instinctive memory" that this bathroom is where a female dies. So it feels strange that he's almost shocked when he remembers it?

When reading the author notes it is to me even more shocking that these are supposed to be 11 years old and the MC is supposed to be mentally 14. I'd assume they were at higher tiers of schooling from everything described or presented. We have a mentally 14 year old that has been gruesomely killed and regressed enough times that he seems to have almost no qualms about it anymore. Just going about his thoughts about it in an academic/eloquent and jovial tone? And he was apparently part of the hero's party that killed the demon lord (in training) but they should barely have even entered their growth spurt? Feels like you compressed 10-20 years of story/character development into 3 years to keep 'em young?

Well, I don't think it's entirely fair in that case, because you're comparing an absolutely tiny niche to some of the most popular media on the planet. English web novels are 0.001% the size of Manga/Anime. Even fantasy novels as a whole are probably 1-5% the size.
>boring settings
That's just personal preference, is the issue. I wouldn't recommend Sanderson's work for example, but his settings are objectively less cookie cutter than Japanese Ninja Villages lmao
Quite honestly I think the whole post-apocalyptic system-multiverse stuff that's the meta in english web novels is more unique than that. Even though again I don't read that garbage

I don't care much about settings and lore in general so I probably can't give good recs, that's not why I read

If you still wish for it then korean murim/academy or chinese wuxia/xianxia is probably the closest you'll get, so it is not that odd that the other anon even specified he was talking about English WNs. I don't think you know what makes a setting unique then. I'd definitely say those settings you mentioned are painfully boring BECAUSE they're generic and uninteresting. The problem is it that you need to fill out the text inbetween the peaks/fights with something, ideally something of substance but as we can see in xianxia/etc most authors resorts to wordpadding and glazing as the actual world/setting is beyond retarded and cannot make sense. You could take some inspiration from RIspammer and read his favorite work as it allegedly has a coherent setting and get back to us if it's possible to use it to write your battle shounen.
>>
>>25524381
What do you see in Naruto that makes it a unique setting?
I really just think you're defensive of an IP you like and conflating "i like this" with "that means this is a bastion of creativity and uniqueness"
Mistborn was meh but it made a lot of creative decisions for its setting that are uncommon in fiction as a whole. I don't think Naruto has a single element that is uncommon. It mixes together a bunch of standard tropes and it's just Japanese Ninjas. Again, fun is not unique, and that's all I'm talking about right now: uniqueness.

The thing about shounen is that, while the plot and characters are all fairy cliche, the world and power system is what makes each one distinct.
To make a shounen, you need to invent a unique power system and a world that is built around it.
Ninja: ninja world
Card game: a world revolved around card games
Alchamy: alchemist world
The closest thing we have to western shounen right now is - I hate to admit this - all the mainstream hard magic system books written by or inspired by Sanderson.
Sure, their pacing sucks compared to actual shounen, but the components are there: an original power system with clear rules and limitations, a world that is shaped by this system, and a protagonist that starts at zero and becomes stronger as they master their powers.
So to answer your question: people are doing it. They're just doing it poorly.
>>
>>25524387
I could add that if you're fine with wuxia/xianxia-esque as battle shounen I've seen people like/talk about Sky Pride and Cradle and from what I gather it is maybe the most popular closest english WN equivalents. Then you have a shitton of different system/litrpg stories that have over the top fights/reactions/rivals/powerlevels but I'm not even entirely sure if you would classify this as "battle shounen" anymore, for example what about Defiance of the Fall (I haven't read it)? Give us a better idea and maybe we'll come up with something.
>>
>>25524408
>with clear rules and limitations,
this is not a requirement in shounen lol
Half of Bleach is Ichigo nearly dying and then unlocking "omg even stronger Hollow form and saves everyone", just complete asspulls back to back to back
The hard magic autism is a pandemic and not what people actually like, as evident by the vast majority of popular media. Rule of Cool is what matters except to the Sanderson and powerscaling nerds

Like what? It really just boils down to "evil tyranical empire with an ancient darkness that was repelled", it's generic rpg shit and its power system isn't very good or unique
>I don't think Naruto has a single element that is uncommon. It mixes together a bunch of standard tropes and it's just Japanese Ninjas.

>I don't think Naruto has a single element that is uncommon. It mixes together a bunch of standard tropes and it's just Japanese Ninjas.
The entirety of its ninjapunk mercenary setting is pretty much completely unique.
>>
>>25524406
Sure, in my mind I meant it that an interesting and unique setting isn't really something that mixes well with battle shounen because the author has to justify himself in coherent words when it is written rather than handwave it away. Because the nature of battle shounen usually is powerlevels this means to continually break most of the setting so there is usually little interest in creating anything of value at any particular point so we just get various degrees of generic slop. But if we're fine with just handwaving it away or with wordpadding/glazing then you can pretty much read any system/litrpg/academy/isekai-slop. It is what replaced battle shounen after all. LitRPG/apocalypse might have a higher chance of a "unique" setting.

Asspull transformation is perfection fine. It's part of the charm.
I'm talking about how things work for the world in general.
Everybody knows that in One Piece, eating a devil fruit gives you a random superpower at the cost of your ability to swim. This is easy enough to understand that even if the author introduces a super powered character that can swim one day with some asspull reasons, it won't magically give everyone else the same ability. You need some long ass training arc for that.
Same thing applies to shinigami swords. Same thing applies to demon hunter's breathing technique.
Rules are there for the boy audience to wrap their minds around how the world works, and for them to argue who'd win in a fight with their friends. And when the MC eventually breaks all the rules with yet another asspull transformation, they can pump up their fists and say, "Whoa! That's so cool I wanna do that!"
>>
>>25524448
no, even fatties don't like fatties. you'd have to be some form of person of color to be that far gone
>>
>>25524470
Is slav a colour?
>>
>>25524468
I think you missed the point, the key climax scenes for most shounen involve breaking the established rules in various asspull ways. They deliberately ignore the "rules and limitations" that you suggested are foundational to the genre.
It's literally the exact opposite of Sanderson hard magic, where the defining principle is that all problems MUST be predictable or at least solvable within the system as it's been established so far.
Shounen also constantly contradicts its own powerscaling/is loosey goosey with the entire concept of their power system

The fact there's a background system of magic that isn't just 'anything can happen whenever' isn't a counterpoint, that's just how... logic? story? everything? works.
>>
>>25524485
do slavs really...?
>>
>>25524342
Yeah it's called China. That describes most xianxia mcs
>>
>>25524492
I said Sanderson was doing it poorly. What part about that don't you under—
You know what, let's keep this simple.
A shounen, at the end of the day, is about super powered people beating the living shit out of each other.
You, as the author, need to explain the source of that power, how it works, and why the MC can't just magic all of his problems away.
You also need to have super powered individuals other than the MC, each with their own powers and weaknesses. A group of people can be called a [soul] society, a [ninja] village, a [pirate] crew, etc.
Then you may also need monsters, special items, gods, unique locales, etc.
Now, before the hard magic autism started, this is considered normal. This is how people used to come up with their own little power fantasy settings.
You wanna create a superhero? You give him an origin, and a list of powers and weaknesses.
You wanna draw up a paper board game in your notebook to play with friends? You gotta write up a rule that your drooling buddies can understand.
It's normal. It's how it works. For decades, nobody had a problem with Superman being weak to kryptonite or Ultraman having a 3 minute transformation limit.
But because Sanderson stupidly put a label on it, we're now arguing fucking semantics with online strangers. Fucking hell.

Naruto is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive shipping faggotry and DARKNESS. The normal anon can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.

However, these very aspects that try to smear over the shit of its core make it a breeding ground for aspie, unsociable underageb& faggots who engage in every kind of faggotry both online and in the real world. The superpowered characters all trying their hardest to look cool, the jutsus, peculiar, colorful clothes, the whole ninja faggotry and everything about the Naruto world fuels their escapist fantasies, while the pity-party character backgrounds, emphasis on revenge, and overall preachiness of the series make it fit just right with the mary-sueish drives of your average preteen and his sense of unwarranted self-importance towards the world. Exactly the kind of shit that makes little kiddies and underageb& retards eat this shit right the fuck up.

Naruto is basically THE series to attract the most hated anime fanbase known to /a/, which is why, regardless of individual opinions, it is the responsibility of every anon to troll the fuck out of this show and everyone who likes it, and ensure that no Naruto threads ever encourage the newfriends to show their faces here.

When you think about it, Mistborn is more literally alien than Naruto lol

Damn guess he should have said Hunter Hunter then so you wouldn't have had a weird tribalistic meltie huh
>>
>>25524533
It seems very discourse-blind to say "you need a magic system with rules and limitations" in the age of Sandersonian magic and then get annoyed when I assume you mean REAL rules and limitations - which is something lots of stories do aim for, so it's not some theoretical.

>English authors usually have an inherent ick towards such retarded writing unironically, or maybe more correctly cannot find the same charm in it.
Westerners are Marvel brained. They have to have stakes and can't appreciate arcs just concluding without it being a thread that hints to or leads to some world ending problem later. A cultivator mc destroying some low level sect without them being pawns of the main bad guy or gaining an artefact just to get stronger without it being a mcguffin that that the main bad guy wants is unfathomable. Or even the idea that there isn't a main bad guy.

>Virtue-signaling is already deeply ingrained in Western writers
What about virtue counter-signaling?
>With an empty backpack on my back, I entered through the sliding doors. No, I did not take my backpack with me out of care for the environment. I don’t care for the environment, and neither do the governments around the globe. Don’t kid yourself that opting out of using a plastic bag will save the world.
I took the usual cart that fit the volume of my backpack well. If I couldn’t fit stuff inside that, that meant my backpack wouldn’t.
Microwave meals, simple ingredients, a few drinks. Booze too - why not? Not like being a little ahead was a reason to celebrate, but not being dead definitely was.
>Everyone everywhere had the same faces. Boredom, depression. Mine wasn’t that different, but for a different reason. The people in the line probably worked a nine to five - failing that, an eleven to seven. No wonder everyone dreaded the vague concept of a tomorrow. Payday, yes, but the landlord, the debt collector, and perhaps the divorced wife, too.
>“That’ll be a hundred twenty and nineteen”, the cashier said with a trained smile. Poor woman. Despite everything, she still has to pretend she loves her job.
>“…And two bags, please”, I requested as I was paying. Someone else will have to work that carbon off. Tragic.

Nayrt but you're still virtue signalling, only for the other side
Virtue signalling is a means to an end, the means don't change even if you change the end

You just have to put up with the spam until the RR normgroids get fed up with it and complain enough.
As with everything in web novels the west is lagging behind the east so don't expect anything for awhile. Even more so because RR moves at a snails pace.
>>
>>25525200
They'll never complain enough. Last week, I got a comment from a reader saying he liked my story because it felt different after all the AIslop he'd been forcing himself through lately. I wanted to ask why would you do that to yourself, but in a way I understand. If you have literally nothing else, what choice is there? These people just need their daily fix to kill time, doesn't matter where it comes from
>>
>>25525366
AIslop is like having your heroin cut with fentanyl. At last I see.
>>
>>25525366
>what choice is there?
There's more original content in RR than you'll be able to read in a lifetime, there is absolutely 0 need to ever choose AIslop.
>it's not the genre I like-
Skill issue, broaden your horizons you filthy casual.
>>
>>25525641
>there is absolutely 0 need to ever choose AIslop
But people still do and it's easy to see why. AI at least prints out simple prose that keeps momentum and is effortless to follow, as opposed that horrid, purple esl navel-gazing that's most amateur fiction
>>
>>25525705
>is effortless to follow
If you've no braincells and the object permanence of a newborn, maybe
>>
>>25525767
Again, you can’t force people to change their behavior. >>25522909
The audience are the way they are, and it’s part of the job to write to their level. Being upset about this is like being upset that a 5 year old prefers reading Clifford the Big Red Dog to Tolstoy.
>>
>>25525776
Yeah but that anon I originally replied to was complaining about a user who 'forced' himself through AIslop. That's not my fucking problem and it's 1000% his fault for reading that shit.
>>
>>25525782
Reading anything is 1000% your "fault," obviously, you're not very sane
