She never gave serious consideration towards what she wanted from life and followed the template provided for her, which was to be married and have children, and found that she hated it once she was trapped in it (probably largely due to the fact that her and Stoner were a terrible match. Stoner was far too passive and detached for a depressive like her.) Once she realized that there was no way out for her, she started acting out vindictively as a way get some sort of satisfaction, knowing Stoner would never divorce her.She was selfish and naive, sure, but it makes complete sense that someone with her lack of emotional tools would act like that.

She does choose to spend months with her mother after the death of her father which is ultimately what causes her to decide to ruin Stoner's life. It's not just her parents that caused her dissatisfaction.
