His Dying Earth books probably come closest if you want to look into that, but it focuses more on clever shitheads outwitting each other in outlandish circumstances than it does on traditional S&S subject matter. Demon Princes is pulp crime noir in a Star Trek-like setting, it's very good for what it is but it's not S&S at all and I suspect that other anon recommended it to you because he wasn't paying close attention to the thread topic.
You could try the Death's Gate cycle. I remember loving that.

The publishing industry (or reader's tastes depending on how you look at it) shifted to mass-market paperbacks and then to Fat Tomes forming Epic Trilogies which killed the magazine-driven short-story market. S&S carked with it.
