What a horrendous choice of image
>>
>>25544039
>Why does the woman in this picture look so familiar? Because she’s meant to. Conceptual artist Christopher Williams’s work, usually produced by professional studios, often mimics 20th-century commercial, ethnographic, or architectural photographs. While deconstructing how such photographs continue to shape our present late-late-capitalist reality, the artist also deconstructs how they were made—here, by including a usually hidden Kodak tool. The photo’s subject is a model Williams chose using the criteria given in a casting call for Jacques Tati’s 1967 film Playtime. Her pose, open-mouthed smile, and towel-wrapped hair vividly recall bath soap ads of the 1960s and ’70s. In another nod to Kodak, the towel is the exact shade of the company’s signature yellow packaging. Despite, or perhaps because of, such extreme deliberation, the resulting artwork is as seductive as the advertisements that inspired it. —A.D.

>Like much of Christopher Williams’s work, Kodak Three Point Reflection Guide sends up the aesthetic conventions of photographic representation, in particular, advertising imagery. Here, Williams makes visible the typically hidden device of the Kodak color bar—the “Three Point Reflection Guide” of the title—used by photographers to measure the trueness of a color in an image. The picture was in fact taken by a professional photographer according to the instructions of the artist, who selected the model by following a casting call used by French filmmaker Jacques Tati for his 1967 film Playtime: "A girl about 20-25 years old, coy, a little awkward, but with intelligent eyes. . .most important is the reserved appearance, due to a good education." On first glance, this image appears to be a pristine, even sterile, commercial photograph, its model flashing the clean smile fetishized by contemporary advertising. However, upon closer inspection, the image gives the lie to its artificiality: the woman is slightly older than usual models, minor imperfections in her skin have not been retouched in post-production, and her bright yellow towel is a nod to Kodak’s signature color.

i think it’d be interesting for OPs to be more imaginative, rather than boring abstract paintings or (christ!) photography. would like to see an aloof, apropos of nothing pic of something unrelated, a screenshot of the french open you saved for no reason, a random pic from your camera roll, a blurry photo you took that morning.
>>
>>25544068
Some people do that. I prefer using them as an opportunity to expose people to art and artists. Even if you hate the one in OP, hey, at least you were exposed to and thought about it, and I think that's worthwhile.

Objectively correct. You're a midwit if you haven't figured this out by now. What's crazy is I'm pretty sure you can more easily make more money being a successful artist in today's world than you can a successful novelist or poet. Sell a couple paintings to some rich folks, that's a bigger paycheck than the lifetime sales of even some award-winning novels and poetry books.

which is why so many people return to shakespeare after being fed him distastefully at school?
the relationship can be with anything as long as the relationship is right. the power of judgement is more important than the knowledge, and will lead you the right way anyway, and judgement can only be formed organically. montaigne said judgement can do without knowledge: but not knowledge without judgement.

why would you? because it’s the unanimous opinion? the point about culture is it’s not a thing you like (sorry, appreciate), it’s a part of you. you have some back and forth with it. not just this is the received wisdom and i hold it thusly, but more i like (parts of) joyce but dislike burroughs and agree with picasso that all photographers want to be painters and think ennius, not virgil, is the true great roman poet.

>Here are my deeply considered thoughts on this book, which nobody is saying, and nobody could have said, because there is no one who's read this like I have, in conjunction with the thing I'm thinking about, of course.

>in about five seconds you'll namedrop and tell me you write for a few cultural crit magazines and pause, expecting me to go oh wowwwww

As I doubtless assume you do not know, I will inform you that I am a steady contributor to forums such as The Drift, and the Los Angeles Review of Books, and N+1, and the like: ...which constitute the last vanguard of the thing that we call culture, being as it is -- do tell, where are you going? >>
There's no use being sad about it
>>
>>25544173
Why should you care about art, about aesthetic expression created by those living in the same world you are? Seems self-evident to me. Particularly for people, like most on /lit/, who wish to experience the height of artistic experience, it's important to keep up with what's new and relates to our current times. One doesn't have to like it, of course, but to remain ignorant isn't worthy of a fully realized human being.

this frame of mind is more suited to (say) engineering than the arts. a bad education is worse than no education. at least with no education it’s easier to keep your integrity. what use is knowledge if there is no understanding?
montaigne again:
> Now, we are not merely to stick knowledge on to the soul: we must incorporate it into her; the soul should not be sprinkled with knowledge but steeped in it. And if knowledge does not change her and make her imperfect state better then it is preferable just to leave it alone.
>>

>That you would love
This is equivalent to "that I perceive as good". That's my point. I have no self image—I'm fat white trash that listens to Lana del Rey and Бaтюшкa, Merzbow and Bach. My favorite painters are of the Hudson School and the surrealists. Today I read some poems from John Donne, a section of Hamlet, and the latest chapter of Gifted on Royal Road. I'm 2openminded5u.

There are patterns, structures, and some glimmer of eternity within the part of our selves that perceives—and therefore creates—art. But modern and postmodern autofellation is as autistic and myopic as every other stratified moribund tradition it decries.

Fuck I wish I wasn't retarded. This post should be 1/3 the length and 10 times as meaningful.

>>
>>25544099
“look at this, good (or bad), isn’t it?’ is what a great deal of criticism comes down to. only with certain artists, it’s easier to seem to be saying more.

of course if you have no judgement, no ability to see a work as it really is, you spend your time groping for guidelines like what critics have said or might say about it, what class it seems to fall into, where it seems to be aiming, whether its style strikes you as normal or not, above all whether it can be called important or not - which is far easier to decide than whether the thing is any good or not.

>But given that anon will avoid spending time on something that haven’t proved it’s worth yet
This is the root of avoiding contemporary literature for many /lit/ anons I suspect; their greatest fear is to read a new novel, declare it either amazing or shit, only for posterity to disagree with them. It'd be like one of those critics who dismissed Joyce or Nabokov. So better to stick with the canon and its periphery, where they knew they are allowed to enjoy whatever they come across.
>>
>>25544282
At first they are like “We’re practicing gentle approach, we don’t force shit upon themselves”, and now they are like “No, we absolutely do because it’s contemporary and provides an important commentary bla-bla-bla”. I cannot keep up with them shifting the paradigm on a whim while I was asleep.

They will suck off Krasznahorkai (perhaps not so much since he got the Nobel because, after all, the point is to be into something obscure) but won't be able to tell you who Mészöly was. They'll go, "Ah, I'm reading Márai (or Nádas), you know, the superior Thomas Mann" but you will never catch them reading Németh László or Szabó Lőrinc or Weöres or Mándy Iván, etc. basically it's sorta like if non-Americans bragged about reading Raymond Carver instead of Henry James.

The best way to gain control of the most intelligent powerful species on the planet would be to completely divide them from the love within themselves. As soon as they are old enough to begin creating and understanding who they are. Force them into a system that teaches them that it is wrong to be yourself if yourself is different from what is accepted as normal. Confuse them about their own biological makeups so that they think that permanently altering their bodies is the answer to happiness. Require their daily attendance at an institution that makes them focus only on the information that is provided. Make them attend that institution from age 5 until an adult and repeatedly test them on the information so that it becomes their truth. Give them an explanation to everything so that they never have a chance to make their own assumptions of the world. Scold them and humiliate them if they suggest an opinion that opposes that of their authorities he reminding them of how cruel their ancestors were to each other in the past and broadcast how cruel they are to each other in the present. Only show them tragedies on the news so that they live in fear and think the worst of one another. Convince them that their species used to be that of an Incognizant wild animal make them think they're very existence is so incredibly random that they lack purpose and struggle to make sense of a creator. Tell them that their kind is as smart as they've ever been so that they don't question the integrity of the system that they're in. Provide them idols with artificial beauty and use them as examples of what it is to look perfect so that they are never content with their own appearance and can't help but to compare themselves amongst each other. Create addictive digital platforms that rank them by numbers so that base their self-worth off of the amount of followers that they have and are never satisfied.

here i am crying about my ex e-gf again
i was weak and checked out her facebook. She turned 25 and the wall is real. She's all bogged down, tattooed and all. Got the fake hair colour and some weird semi duck face going on. I'm fucking devastated, she was mega cute just 2 years ago. Now its all ruined and gone forever. Also, she's back from REDACTED i guess the marriage didn't work out. Now she's doing some odd jobs back home- i immediately estimated her as stupid back then, but i always thought she'd figure out a way, even just with her looks. Turns out she didn't. Also, her stupidity was kinda funny to me, i thought it was cute and that she was pretending to be stupid. Turns out she wasn't.
I dunno what to think of it all. I just wish she wasn't bogged down right now. Wish she was cute. The wall isn't even that bad (for her) physically, it's the psychological part that ruins them with bad decisions looks-wise any everything else-wise

>>25545399
nta but i believe an old english playwright had a line about better to have loved and lost.
>>
>>25545169
>I just wish she picked me back then.
One question: do you specifically want her to be with you ever since you’ve last seen her, so that she’s probably prevented from downfall (or not - you could’ve eventually become that ex that sent her spiraling in lieu of her ex husband, just saying), or you feel personally hurt she’s chosen other guy? Second sounds easier to come to terms with.
>>
>>25545414
i dont care bro.
i dont care what the old english playwright said. some of us are too sensitive so regular callousness needed to survive a dealing with a modern woman is too much to ask. It's like to be successful with women these days you gotta try and fail and try until you don't feel anything towards a new woman. If you don't feel anything then they like you. You can also survive breakups easily. So those types don't even love. And are successful with women, that's nuff said.
I don't even want to build up that tolerance cause it feels like something unholy and wrong.
Also, that line implies someone lived his whole life not loving ( a woman). But there are lots of things to love in this world, art, nature, first and foremost God. God's love you cannot lose, so it's superior to loving a woman. The only life that's wasted is a life in which you do not love anything.
>>
damn, new Lambchop album is pretty dissapointing
>>
>>25545429
i dont even understand the first option. It's not a "downfall" or whatever. Every woman ages, she's fine, probably. I dont want her to be with me ever since i've last seen her, i barely think about her, only on rare occassions where its more intense so i need to vent. If I went to meet her i'd drop my spaghetti anyways.
I know why she chose the other guy. Money. And convenience. And other unrelated things like culture interests, she's very interested in that guy's nation's culture. There's nothing to come to terms with, it's a reality of life, women are gonna women and you either adapt or you gain wizard powers
>>
>>25544036
"I want to debate controversial topics!", I say, unaware that all I'm going to do is slapfight with some professional mass debater who has spent the last fifteen years screaming at people over this and will simply talk past you while throwing an ocean of garbage.
Alas, unfortunately in civilized society those topics are illegal to talk about.
>>
>>25545443
>i dont even understand the first option
Mind you, you are talking to an aspiring writer with English as target language.

My point is, you are probably not missing her as a person in your life. Maybe you just hurt she’s chosen some other guy over you. What I’m trying to say is that maybe she’d never been a right person for you, even in her “cute” phase - why bother now then. She was not right for you then, she’s not right for you now, what does it matter how her life turned.
>>
>>25545435
not afraid to dump your purse out on 4chan, eh?
& i was being tongue in cheek it’s a very famous quote from shakespeare. goes without saying i think your thinkpiece on people who are lucky in love (& love in general) is off the mark but that’s to be expected. there’s a brief and informative bit in the rubaiyat that claims that a man in the arms of a woman is as close to god as he is ever likely to be this side of the grave.

That scene in Mailer's novel An American Dream when the main character cums inside the foxy blonde love interest and says, "Shit, so that's what it's all about."

https://www.apexbookcompany.com/blogs/apex-magazine/the-bathhouse-for-long-life I think this story is the embodiment of what I hate about a lot of contemporary writing: it's captain planet but in a literary setting.

1. It's dialectic idea driven. That's fancy speak for instead of writing an essay about the experience (like say https://aeon.co/essays/italianness-is-a-state-of-travelling-in-both-directions, which I liked) it's so simple minded about what it wants to do. Men are invaders, violating woman's autonomy, while women aren't. I thought it was weird that it opened with magic abortion and contraption, but now I realized it: the point was to remove men from the equation with contraption, and stop their mistake from abortion.

2. No wrinkles. Let's go back 1. about the contraption and abortion. Why is it we don't see anyone who was pregnant from the magic also going back for an abortion? It is such a weird thing to point out, but it's symbolic of the issue: people don't change their mind, don't have contradictions, don't even have moral failings. The spider mom killed a pregnant woman, by mistake yes but still, and the story gives not a single shit about exploring it. There's no
>what was her family life?
>did she had dependents?
>what role did she had to her community?
>Did she had a lover? The story hates men, so let's say she was a lesbian. You may have killed someone's life, you thought about the cruelty of kids bullying each other few paragraphs down, but this point is just "lol shit happen."
I am not even saying the story should focus in on it. I am just saying something to the effect of "man, spider mom was a cunt for killing my actual mom. Like X, but come on."
She kills someone else, because they refused to be said no due to an abortion. Another woman. AH, but they're with the Radiant empire, aka the man empire, so it's fine! You can't just kick them out. Nah bro, just shoot them.

3. It ironically enough is very, very shallow. This story is claimed to be about abortion. But in what way? The legalistic practice? What is this story genuinely trying to say? Why this story? Because right now it's basically small, pre-indstural female societies get corrupted by male conquerors and their woman collaborators, with the springs of abortion/contraption being a method of the Kingdom of Woman to be independent.
>this woman has three daughters but no sons? Horrible!
>spider spirit minding her business but she keeps getting attacked -> Kingdom of Woman minding their own business but got conquered
>woman being second class citizens in this world
>"drunk men laughing about all the pleasures they would solicit from their wives": it's shameful to talk about your sex experience sure, but this story deliberately pointed it out as a sign of cruelty of the world when at best it's objectifying consensual sex.

It's just like, a whole lot of nothing. There's not even an abortion discussion: it's more an abortion plot device.

he talks about it the way ppl who do combat sports think about competitions, like whatever happens in the fight that night is written as history forever, and the experience of training camp, fight night build up, after the fight, the celebration or coping, and in the end u just remember the experience not that much of whether u won or lost, way better to compete and lose than just linger around gyms and never step in the ring or on the mat.

I bitched about another book that looks similar, but I concede that it was a lot smarter in setup. It had a lot more characters, with actual personality, faults, virtues. They get on each other's nerves. They assume the worst. They even have changing relationships.
Look at this story: all the relationships are pretty much static. This story is just about righting a single injustice. Even Isongo, who was the main character's lover, has zero development: it's all just backstory, ex-lovers and all of that. And ex-lovers because again, evil empire, she became a woman collaborator.
It's just, for lack of a better term I am not sure why the author wrote this, beyond a feminist power fantasy. That's a weird thing to say, but I can't help but keep comparing it mentally to that trope in some animes where the main character is already super powered, is perfect, has a harem/friends, and is just awesome wiht no issues.
Even little things, like how YOU SHOULD FEEL REGRET KILLING PREGNANT WOMAN, Isongo either helping or hurting the main character on her quest, or someone of the Kingdom of Woman having a son, or getting an abortion when she's pregnant with a girl/from the spring. Just something in this world to push back. To make the main character reexamine their life.
But then, that's missing the point. These stories are for the author and their intended audience. People who have been marginalized so much, that they need media that exemplifies them. It's like the Bible or religious text from oppressed groups: here is our guy, doing this cool thing, while the powers that be are dipshit retards. It's not about right or wrong, or even a story. It's about validation, about belonging. It's saying "no, if I want to be independent from men's society, that is fine thing to do. There is zero issues with it." But unlike nazi fiction, I don't expect to read this power fantasy-esqe fiction in my so called high-brow literature. And I'm left with a case of what's the fucking point? The editor said this had good world building and wants to see a sequel on it: on what grounds?
>There's a kingdom of women: they got their ass kicked by men because men had metallurgy
>they can use magic to make woman pregnant and abortion
>woman from the empire of men has silver inlays on them because they been made human cattle
>immortal spider demon (they mention that fucking adjective so many time. Immortal. Yet she's gone. So is she dead or what? Doesn't seem very immortal)
Besides generic Chinese that's pretty much it.

And oh god, damn. I hate how much backstory, that does nothing but make the spider mom look quirky while again, she is killing a pregnant woman. You noticed I didn't mention the adventurers trying to plunder her cave? Because I can see there's a case to be made for killing them in self defense.
>oh anon! He is a bitch, here's my

The overall effect all of this creates is just a story that wastes my time. If the story was flipped, I would still hate it, because it attacks a fundamental belief I have about human experience. That life has clear moral clarity that if not be resolved, than at least spotted.
Meanwhile, stuff like slavery, which IS wrong and evil (and for our discussion, American slavery) was a messy, multi-generational process of healing. Just because the emancipation proclamation was said did not mean the underlying problem was solved.
But these stories, for lack of a better term, would. Like I get the impression that these stories would write the reconstruction post-slavery experience of African Americans to be this idealized power flip, with absolutely zero issues. That before, there was clear good and evil, and it's the same but flipped power dynamics. And it feels lazy.

I'm a pro-choice libtard, sue me. So why does this story upsets me? Because it is the equivalent in idea complexity as 4chan posts. It talks about the buzzwords, one level idea reflection, without a compelling plot, so-so characterization and I guess fine language, mixed with backstory that interrupts. It's the failure mode of "I wanted to write an essay but it's just saying X is good or X is bad, so instead I'll smuggle that into a story!".

Let me conclude with this thought experiment: how would I write this to be to my liking?
>more ambiguity on whether nation of men is good or bad, with a theme of self-determination vs safety or male comfort or just something. I genuinely can't think of a good reason besides them being stronger for any women in the story to have a man.
>we open with fields of abortion. Why is it that abortion or contraption have zero exploration? The WORLD BUILDING RESTRICTION ON USING THEM has more words than people wondering if they should have an abortion or not.
>we need to see the spectrum of women. Not just two, I want to see which ones embraced, shun, escape, or even succeed in this new world order.
>cut backstory because at best it's just reinforcement of mother/daughter theme to hide the fact that the plot is very slim. If we are going to keep it, we need an actual arc: start at spider mom killing the pregnant woman, feeling regret, raising the protagonist to make it up, and then end on with the protagonist saying she loved her spider-mom anyways.
>one plot complication/issue, to not make it so obvious.
>pressure for the protagonist to join the empire of man. Not even a good or real one, something like wealth -> safety -> spirits/friends. Now there's stakes at play that shift.

Do you just not value human life at all? I struggle to understand pro abortionism as anything but either cynical nihilism ("kill the poor") or feministic narcissism (if you're getting mad that I didn't mention women who are trapped and have their lives "ruined" by pregnancy please understand that that's narcissism on par with incels demanding sex slaves). You can find any infinite number of ways to present an adult being as "not really alive" the same way you can with a fetus or whatever. Read "Being No One".

I've finally understood prosefags. I've only ever read one book at a time then given it a few days before reading another to reset my palette, but recently I've started David Copperfield and A Game Of Thrones at the same time and the difference is staggering.
Jumping between genre fiction and more "complex" works never really overlapped with me, I can read them both fine in a vacuum but having a direct comparison while both works are fresh in my mind is genuinely ruining AGOT. GRRM's writing is borderline special needs compared to Dickens. You can have all the history and backstory in the world but with Dicken's writing you can glean all of that simply from how a character reacts to a situation or their dialect, it makes them feel significantly more alive despite getting less information on them. In AGOT you have some shit like
>The wolf looked up at [character]. The wolf had gold eyes. The eyes gleamed like golden coins.
and it's so fucking insipid it's almost insulting. It's so juvenile in its delivery it honestly makes it hard to even picture whatever scene he's trying to convey despite being so blunt. Dicken's simply explains the scent from a larder and it paints a much, much more vivid picture.
Also, which is sort of unrelated, I really hate how you hit a point in AGOT where you read the chapter header and can instantly tell "Oh dammit, this is going to be a shit-boring chapter" because he feels the need to explore literally every named character's perspective on the current situation. I'm a sucker for court politics, sue me, but I don't give a modicum of a fuck about a prepubescent child's opinion on the matter. Just give me backroom meetings and hooded whispers in a smoky pub discussed by adults directly involved.

The problem is that life is so incredibly nuanced and has so many idiots, that I do not want to imposed upon society nor the families with the burden of parenthood when they are clearly ill-equipped to do so. As life as nuanced, I know I will never have an abortion: because I see myself as equipped for parenthood.
But some teenagers fucking just because, and they were too stupid to use condoms or birth control? That will cripple their lives moving forward, when fundamentally, you can have children again later. Abortions genuinely are sad, I hate them on a moral basis: but as a societal correctional tool, it's an effective deterrent because it allows for parenthood to be post-poned for later.
>but what about sluts?
Again, if they're so stupid that they somehow got pregnant, then they aren't equipped for it. Besides I already have a kid in the way, so I am doing my part.

But even this stance I feel doesn't have it's adequate research, consideration or whatever, it's just something off-the-cuff. Bringing it back to my post, even here there's nuance, a separation of choice (can they) morality (should they) and reflection on who goes through with it (would they). It is not just black and white "abortion good! pro-life evil! Kill Trump!" meaningless drivel like I see in mags. Because life is difficult and messy, and there isn't a unifying way besides first realizing it is.
