What do AI tech oligarchs actually believe? What books do they read? Where do they get their purported batshit insane ideas that we're going to replace humanity with robots and find eternal life uploading our brains inside galactic supercomputers?
Many of them believe that Ian Banks' The Culture is basically a good thing.
>>25544684Fucking Brandon Sanderson of all people thinks that too hahahahaha
>>25544501>Where do they get their purported batshit insane ideas that we're going to replace humanity with robots and find eternal life uploading our brains inside galactic supercomputers? Those ideas aren't theirs. They come from sci-fi authors, whom I suppose they often read and like to entertain their stories as if their were future possibilities, not unlike many other people. There's also certain strands of modern philosophy which heavily feature sci-fi hypotheticals to explain a concept (e.g. Derek Parfit and teletransporters) which affects opinion on whether a potential future technology might be a good or bad thing. That's supposibg that a lot of tgese things are even possible to begin with.
>>25544501They believe in what their R&D autists come up with. If you think Musk came up with a single invention, you're clueless.
>>25544501Sci-fi , dystopia , capitalism and fantasy. Increase your imagination by reading more instead of asking questions on social media. Meditate and use “free association “ and “active imagination “.
>>25544699Their R&D department definitely did not come up with the concept of brain uploading
read curtis yarvin's old blog, that's basically it. no democracy, sovereign ceo-king ruled lands.
You can go down the rationalist canon pipeline (I’ve done so myself). The ideas are vapid and shallow but once you get on their wavelength you see people like Sam Altman talking about that worldview everywhere.Assuming this question is real. You could probably start with Douglas Hofstadter, his books are actually kinda delightful. Then read Quine if you really want to go deep on the philosophy and whatever prerequisite works that entails. Alternatively you can read Yudkowsky’s sequences, they come from a blog called LessWrong that a lot of influential people seemed to be reading back in the late oughts. After that you can get into some of the off shoot blogs that came out of LessWrong - the authors usually bundle the best posts into a single epub or something. Sam Altman seems to be a fan of SSC/Astral Codex Ten, written by Scott Alexander. He wrote a blog post called “meditations on moloch” that Thiel, Altman, Musk all make reference to. Some of the other blogs of interest are Curtis Yarvin (already mentioned) and Nick Land. Once you’ve gone that far it’ll be self evident where to go next. Or save yourself the trouble and don’t even bother, I can’t say reading all this nonsense has really enriched my life.
>>25544501All these people are part of a thousand year conspiracy to dominate the planet and unleash a totalitarian space empire, with or without humanity, doesnt matter. All that matters is creating the imperium and having an actual impact on the cosmos.
>>25544940I recall that Yarvin's Patchwork does feature democracies albeit with an exit. Also, I doubt many of these people genuinely agree with Yarvin, a neo-luddite mercantilist and AI skeptic.
>>25544952The ideas aren't exactly vapid. You see the same kind of prometheanism and idea that the entire universe is perfectly intelligible by human rationality all the way to the enlightenment
>>25544960And the jews too
>>25544501>What do AI tech oligarchs actually believe?
>>25544501>What books do they read?Talmud
>>25544501I find most of them boring. They are good businessmen, sure, but they seem the type to hire geniuses and radical thinkers rather than be one themselves. I'd even go so far as to say that genius type thinking is incompatible with running a huge business. Only Tech Oligarch I've found interesting is Pavel Durov. Very solid education. Brother is even smarter. Father was a Prof of Philology so you can bet he was very well read growing up.
The rationalist, effective altruist clique is extremely powerful in Silicon Valley. Some big players like Amodei are staunch members of that community. Scott Alexander and Nick Bostrom have a lot of sway. They are probably going to be the dominant ideology of the future given their influence in AI spaces.
>>25544501>What do AI tech oligarchs actually believe? The Talmud, and the same stuff as Schwab and Soros. Basically, bad news for everyone apart from the 1% psychopaths.>Where do they get their purported batshit insane ideas that we're going to replace humanity with robots and find eternal life uploading our brains inside galactic supercomputers?Severe brain damage, hubris and narcissism.
>>25545209>the TalmudScott Alexander is by his own account an apostate from Orthodox Judaism. Altman has occasionally mentioned Judaism’s teaching guiding his actions but by that logic Thiel and Hassabis often cite Christian thought as their inspiration.
>>25544501uhh, zionism?
>>25545084Great title, ngl. I hate how I just know that this book is going to be really, really fucking gay though, despite the subject matter being cool and interesting.
>>25545216The children of satan would never lie of course
>>25544693my god does he reallyi try not to assume that writers of mindless slop are retards, but it's getting hard
>>25544501>What do AI tech oligarchs actually believeMaking money so people look up to them and worship them >What books do they read? They don't >Where do they get their purported batshit insane ideas that we're going to replace humanity with robots and find eternal life uploading our brains inside galactic supercomputers?Teevee
>>25544693SpaceTech Mormonism
>>25544699I don't think R&D autists would come up with something as retarded as The Boring Project
>>25544501Calling them oligarchs is giving them too much power, calling them techbros is too belittling. You are stuck in a place where you cant understand because you are the problem. All you have to do is find interviews where they tell you the answer. They are not shy people. They answer question. Your problem is that you can't decide if the are retarded techbros or scary oligarchs with supervilian ambitions.
knowest better than this, anon; believe nothing but profit; all else is spectacle for masses.
>>25544501>Where do they get their purported batshit insane ideas that we're going to replace humanity with robots and find eternal life uploading our brains inside galactic supercomputers?if you replace "eternal" with "dramatically extended", these ideas follow naturally from believing that humans are fully explainable as physical systemsthey're often directly getting the ideas from science fiction, but they're derivable from very simple premises
>>25545471He says it at around 19:00 or so iirc:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsl8Y_WJp-4I like Brandon, if not often his writing. He seems like a genuinely nice guy. But holy shit.
>>25544501They believe in climate apocalypse within their lifetimes or some sort of modern "Late Bronze Age Collapse". Everything else is smoke and mirrors for normies and investors.
>>25545836Elon also said he believed this but then changed his mind around last year because "AI and robotics cured my pessimism and gave me hope"
>>25545836I don't think they actually do. Nobody really believes that in the terms they describe, they just use such extreme rhetoric because it helps bolster their position and extract concessions for things they do actually want i.e. gibs/redistribution/dem programs.
I've found that this board is incapable of dealing with land, thiel or girard because of the marxist leftist billionaire hating shills hiding in every corner trying to pass themselves off as well read academics. I mean isn't that crazy? We are currently witnessing the philosophy of these three people play out in real time but when anyone tries to discuss it, the thread degenerates into juvenile shit flinging about politics?
>>25544501>What do AI tech oligarchs actually believe?wealth=powerI have power=goodothers have power=bad
>>25546585>We are currently witnessing the philosophy of these three people play out in real timeWe are?
>>25544940Peter Thiel raped Curtis Yarvin in the hot sticky summer of '08
>>25546766So what is being witnessed, according to you?
>>25546585>landAI is a meme. But sure we can accelerate into the global third world, that's a more realistic end of the world scenario>thielHe'll get shot and killed and then completely forgotten>girardDon't know enough to commentNot a marxtard or a leftytard
>>25544501They believe only in power, money and control, nothing else, they don't care about the rest of the planet, (you), morality etc. They are so obsessed with AI because they want to create the real thing, aka artificial general intelligence or artificial superintelligence, they think AGI or ASI will give them 10 times more power, money and control, but they are wrong, that thing will rather burn the World to the ground than to be a slave to them
>>255469040's and 1's are mogging human language and some people have a problem with it. Others are embracing it.I dont see it as the culmination of some specific philosophy, although I do see the similarities to promethian and satanic materialism. These guys thoughever seem to have more of a "we figured some shit out and now we are maximizing it" approach.
I don’t possibly see how Western civilization survives in the worldview of people like Musk and Land and yet they’re both white supremacist conservatives

They follow the Geist. The ideas do not belong to them. They are merely hosts used by the parasitic Geist.
>>25547752who are the people surrounding ted
>>25546585This lol.Girard is great, prescient. I don't know if I trust Thiel, or his instincts if I do him, but I do know that his critics are nearly all reflexive histrionics in the same way as poltards.
>>25545464trying to find 21st century non fiction that isn't written like a blog post seems near impossible.
>>25545497>Your problem is that you can't decide if the are retarded techbros or scary oligarchs with supervilian ambitions. They can be both. Those aren't contradictory terms.
>>25547782I suppose if you imagine them to be a retarded techbro supervilian oligarch but seems kind of clunky. An obvious question would be; how does a retard become a supervilian oligarch? Are they also nepotistic? Just lucky? Or maybe there isn't necessarily anything retarded associated with the "bro" appendage. Doesn't really matter to me, I am a simple guy trying to use what's left of the English language.
>What do AI tech oligarchs actually believe?becoming immortal androgynes and sucking little boy cock. anyone who tells you anything else is a schizo.

>>25547818> I am a simple guy trying to use what's left of the English language. That's sexist capitalism and literal white supremacy.
>>25547761>how do you do fellow theorists of mind
>>25547408When the world doesn't make any sense to you consider whether your own lack of intelligence, and not the entire world, is the problem.
>>25547948Fine, thanks. You?
>>25547764
>>25547898Pretty much this. I can’t possibly be invested in any hype about AI or new technologies knowing that none of them lead to any healthy cultural behavior. What is there to be optimistic about? I can create gimmicky video games or have a robot do my laundry while the West still becomes a gay brown depopulated economic zone? Who fucking cares then? Technological development has always coincided with civilizational decline and rupture throughout history. It will be no different with AI. The idea that we’re just going to solve all conflict and somehow create a utopia is ridiculous and Elon knows it considering how much he regularly bemoans Western decline amid his capeshit fantasies of intergalactic utopia.
>>25547964>Technological development has always coincided with civilizational decline and rupture throughout historyNo it hasn't. The greatest period of technological progress ever, for anyone, was in the Western world ~1400-now. Where do you people get this stupid shit from?
>>25547898>THE FUTURE IS NOW>...ANY DAY NOW WE SWEAR
>>25547971Yeah and how many people and civilizations went extinct at the dawn of modernity you fucking idiot, our own ancestors from only about 70 years ago would be utterly repulsed by what has become of their societies in the West and it’s only going to get more unrecognizable
>>25547958Seems very phenomenological, will check it out.
>>25547006I miss when out-of-touch boomers stuck to facebook.
Thiel, Altman and Musk are grifters in it for money and NRx ideologyAmodei might actually believe his own "creating ai jesus" bullshitZucc is in it for money and less attached to one ideology
>>25548101Does anyone else think that ALL of this AI stuff is just pure capeshit to keep their businesses afloat and prevent a bubble pop? I mean of course the technology is real and will totally transform society, but all their doomsday prophecies, all their promises of interstellar colonization, all their promises that everyone will become a billionaire by 2050 -- that is all completely fucking fake. It's just that these people are so willing to keep their bubble inflating that they'll do anything to prolong it and ensure people like Trump get elected to give them unlimited power. I have a feeling that one day this whole thing is just going to pop and the Great Depression 2.0 will happen when capitalism can no longer run on all its fumes. AI is the last thing keeping it afloat, especially watching as all our oil and energy is currently burning in the Middle East and Europe.
>>25548300No. I've used it to do 10k+ worth of software dev work in literally 1% of the time. It has rough edges (very rough edges, and we don't know just how rough) but everything has been changed forever and you are clearly in deep denial. I doubt we'll all be billionaires. Objectively speaking the most likely outcome is extinction.
>>25548304The technology itself and the people creating the technology are not the same. The Internet obviously changed the world but the companies that went out with the Dot Com Bubble obviously were not. AI is here to stay, but the current snake oil salesmen at the helm and their retarded Effective Altruism cult is pure capeshit to me. It's better they run out of steam and disappear now so that better companies manage this technology and not some faggot Jew scammers
>>25548310Google, Microsoft, Oracle, and PayPal survived the dotcom crash and transformed the world afterwards. Yes the "ai powered grocery list" companies are fucked but I don't see any evidence beyond cope that anthropic is. Stop repeating shit just because it "makes true".
>>25548319*Makes sense
>>25548319Do you honestly think that Altman and Amodei are asking for a "slowdown" of AI technology in earnest? You really believe in all their stories about AI will kill us all but they still need to release a new model every week anyways? No, this is just a naked attempt at a power grab. They want to be the ones to regulate this technology and create megacorps that control the whole planet. They create hysteria then promise to be the responsible adults in the room who will save us peasants. It's outright cyberpunk shit.
>>25548340This is schizo style thinking. The world isn't simple enough to follow a movie plotline.
These "oligarchs" don't actually do anything. They are spokespeople for DARPA and who knows who else. These are the people we are "supposed" to hate. Same thing happened with Zuck and Facebook.
>>25547012>0's and 1's are mogging human language and some people have a problem with itAI hit a plateau where it can emulate the act of writing but not the intention, let alone create anything coherent, new or innovative. You cannot create true machine intellect, despite Thiel and pals wanting to be gods, and the power grids can't actually get any more powerful. In the end all AI accomplished is convincing greedy idiots that they can automate their entire workforce and create a corporate ouroboros, basically a caste system where companies trade money between themselves (which will of course grow via investment), utilizing AI slave labor to put up the facade of a workforce without actually having one, while everyone quietly starves to death and never rebels somehow. But AI can't write a book because AI is not intellect, it's your phone's auto-correct with very robust bowling alley bumpers, nobody is getting mogged by that shit.
>>25548361Stop making shit up retard >But AI can't write a book because AI is not intellectThere are 100% AI generated best selling books on Amazon. >THAT'S JUST S-SLOP IT ISN'T *REAL* WRITING JUST LIKE THE BULLETS AI WILL USE TO EXTERMINATE US WON'T BE *REAL* BULLETS SO IT DOESN'T MATTER IF WE DIEPlease keep extending your no true scotsman delusions ad infinitum rather than try to actually think of a positive solution for the future. You're doing really great work.
>>25548361I just read your post again and it's one of the most rancid cases of Dunning Kruger I've encountered in a while. I think it actually tops 14 year old me screaming at people on Omegle about how they need to read Aristotle. Astounding delusion on display.
>>25548361Third reread. I missed this gem;>and the power grids can't actually get any more powerful.Do you think the grid is a fixed, limited natural resource? Is there some secret special ingredient in telephone poles and copper wires both that we've run out of? What went through your head when you wrote this? Why ON EARTH would we not be able to extent the grid when China has built almost all (iirc) of theirs in just the last few decades? God help us if you have a job doing something important.
>>25544501Why do you incels hate women?
>>25544684Why would it be bad exactly?
>>25548460It explicitly means total human disempowerment and erasure of real culture. Imagine the bland inhumanity of the worst aspects of western corporate culture dialled up to aleph null and crossbred with redditor hypergooner pothead lifestyle. Realistically humans would die out pretty quickly, no one would have kids, and the machines wouldn't even pretend to be friendly and conscious let alone actually be. Banks was too optimistic. Read Consider Phlebas if you haven't. It's crazy that people think Banks meant to portray The Culture positively. The ending makes it very clear what he thinks IMO.
