The alphabet is easy enough to learn (get ready to try to differentiate between four "z" letters -- always makes spelling fun), but the fact that they leave out most vowel sounds in writing means that encountering new words is like a bit of a guessing game -- you have to try to assume which vowels are there. It's like writing in shorthand. And when you learn a new word, there's really no frame of reference for it -- you have to invent ways to remember what, say, "khaham" means, relative to "khoobam" or "khabidam" or any of the other million "kh-" words. I've heard people say that you could easily learn French, Italian, and Spanish in the same time it would take you to learn Farsi or Arabic, and I believe them. That said, I was able to read and write (though, not well) within a few weeks, and I was able to form basic sentences in about the same time. The tenses are straightforward enough. The standard sentence syntax is a little funky, but once you get it, you've got it. Give it a shot. Movaffaq bashid.
