If Saruman of Many Colors actually obtained the one ring, would he have been able to master control of it and defeat Sauron, or was this simply an insane fantasy that Sauron was manipulating?
>>25547717Sauron and Saruman are of equivalent spiritual strength. They're both Maia. There's no reason to think Saruman couldn't master the Ring if he got it. Gandalf fears the Ring precisely because he knows he's strong enough to put it to use, rather than be mastered by it like a Man or a Hobbit would be. And if Gandalf's able to use it, surely Saruman is.
He'd have been mastered by it, in the end. It'd just look like he would have mastered it but he would be doing Sauron's will all unknowing. And eventually been functionally identical to Sauron, broken to his will.I can't remember but I'm pretty sure Sauron gave him a proper smack via the Palantir, and that was with one bound into Wizard form and the other a ringless wraith. We don't know how pre-Corruption Sauron stood compared to Saruman but Mairon was supposed to be something special, so eh.
It's a "stare into the abyss and it stares back into you" situation.
