Modern teaching methods all suck. The way they taught in the 19th century was better.

The 19th century was the beginning of the end for education

I am studying engineering in uni and the current education system is complete slop. I feel like im learning nothing from class. We should go back to requiring working knowledge of Latin before admittance into college to filter out retarded students and incompetant professors.
>>
>>25551440
I'm not talking about professors and schools though, I'm talking pedagogy in general, and specifically pedagogy in books. Books that are meant for you to learn from suck, whether the learning is meant to happen in school or on your own.

>>25551435
how the fuck do you even apply this today as a self-taught? where do you even begin?
I looked it up, yeah sounds cool and all, but how do you unfuck decades of modern """"education"""" (aka literally government-mandated indoctrination of people into obedient docile impotent robots who don't question anything and just execute orders when told to do so)
>>

You might not know that people were already criticizing the educational institutions back in the 1850s, with the same points. A Humboldtian state sponsored institution is just not possible. Even Oxford, Cambridge & co. are there to boost the elite's CV and they have very little to do with "education" and "research".
>>
>>25551606
Dumbass, I said this thread is about teaching in a broad sense, specifically teaching through books, whether they're for use in schools or not. And you keep yapping about your fucking institutions. Look at the fucking image. Fuck off already.
>>
>>25551435
Education died when Schule began

You stupid fucks can't even differentiate between content, mode of delivery, and assessment format when criticising the system, and you think you can fix it

what made them better?

There are good and bad teachers, but the idea that the education system is fucked because you think the image of some arcane text unpacking minute grammatical forms is fucking stupid. In the 19th century education was a privilege, now it's a right. You tell me how you would pedagogically approach teaching a class of 30 kids with varied motivations and a slew of alphabet disorders with parents who never gave two knobs of goat shit about education to begin with your asinine autistic special interest instead of spouting nonsense and calling people retarded because they can't read your fucking mind.

its not enough to use putnam problems to gauge talent. you need to demand that everyone recognize Λ Ο Γ Ο Σ

>but the opposite of conservative is not radical or liberal, it is
what?

anyway
the problem with critiques such as these is that they almost never differentiate between pedagogy and politics. what little pedagogy is discussed invariably becomes a throwback to "let's just do things the Old Way and hope for the best", which ends up throwing out a lot of baby with the bathwater.
and then (the few times right wingers manage to actually pull off such an experiment) when everything goes to ratshit, you sit around wondering how it all went wrong.
(this is also happening on a wider level in other fields with the current US Government)

let me give you a curriculum design according to what I think you idiots want:
1) basic English reading, writing, arithmetic mastery for all, sufficient to get along in life
2) national and world history, ethics, and religion, always emphasising the cornerstones of Western civilisation, i.e. reason, habeas corpus, democracy, Christianity
3) basics of law and politics, enough to understand why our laws support our ethics and, crucially, what laws do NOT
4) basic reasoning, logic and critical thinking skills, basic science
5) sports, arts, literature, music
6) basic self and home maintenance skills, e.g. washing, cooking, chores, budgeting, physical fitness
7) basics of business and economics, to know how the world works (accounting should be covered under self maintenance)

advanced and vocational stages:
8) electives in further math and physics for future engineers and computer specialists
9) advanced science for future medical, laboratory, and research workers
10) advanced law, shooting, finance, agriculture, etc for lawyers, policement, soldiers, bankers, farmers, etc
11) minimum 2nd language
12) electives capped according to national requirements

as for methodology:
1) every student is pushed to excel
2) emphasis on first memorising words, facts, and formulas; then applying to realistic vocational examples
3) frequent periodic exams to assess mastery
4) no quotas of any kind, pure meritocracy in all fields

now the challenge is to fit all that into 800-1,000 hours of formal education a year for ten years

THIS is the kind of blueprint that critics of liberal education should come up with
but do you ever see them doing that? no...
>>
>>25554714
yeah congrats you’re probably the first person in history to put together a basic 20 item bullet list of important points in education.
i can see why you’d dislike the “Old Way” given your radical views of what 12 basic subjects should be taught in schools.

>>but the opposite of conservative is not radical or liberal, it is
>what?
oliver says its "permissive". classical liberalism, is a conservative position, conservatives are the real radicals, but liberals are defined by being "permissive" especially but not limited to sexually
>>25554714
>electives
well the point of quoting revilo oliver referring to paul elmer more is to condemn the concept of electives as contrary to the universitys mission of education. education is intrinsically countercultural because its purpose is to root the student in the geistesgeschichte and get him to recognize his culture isnt the only culture. neoliberals say yes of course and take pictures of themselves eating exotic foods prepared by foreign indentures
>>
>>25554725
ever seen a conservative education critic so much as put together a bullet list, let alone rough out a syllabus?
idiot

>>25554734
>picrel
thank you

>condemn the concept of electives as contrary to the universitys mission of education
why?
>education is intrinsically countercultural because its purpose is to root the student in the geistesgeschichte and get him to recognize his culture isnt the only culture
ignorance isn't the opposite of immorality, any more than that knowledge is a condemnation of the past
education is proscriptive as well as prescriptive, and in fact I mentioned that in my post
this attitude of
>never ever teach your children about knives or they will cut themselves; it is best to keep them ignorant about cutting implements
is, well, quite ignorant
>>
80% of kids in school are using AI for homework. education is never going to improve again. ever

I'm friends with some teachers who are complete midwits. Not only that, they're forced into IEPs for almost every other student who was told by Dr. Shekelstein that they need special attention because they can't focus on a single topic for more than 30 seconds. That's why the education system is fucked.
