Read a bibliography of Tolkien once. I wish I could remember the editors name, but in it I found out that in the midst of writing it his editor objected to the size of the thing and insisted it be split in three Tolkien had a difficult time choosing where to make the ends and beginnings of a trilogy, and it really does show. The flow of the narrative does get interrupted. The titles of these parts must have also been vexing. What else would you cal part two? The Three Towers? I remember the changes to Faramir really pissed me off at the time. Never went to see the third film.

The movies feel more like a pulp adventure, while the book is much more of a slow burn that ramps up further and further as the story progresses.The changes were probably because they didn’t have the runtime to show more of the characters, or it made things too complicated to the overall narrative movie audiences were expecting.They’re both great in their own way, and I’m thankful for a good adaptation. The movie industry is a dead end now, and only well written literature can be written.
