> always think of how boring the normal people are
> try to get along with some interesting, artsy people
> they end up acting irrational, harassing me and driving literally nuts

I kid you not, I’m literally having Richard experience right now

For some reason the people who jump off the deep end into arts stuff are always deeply mentally ill.

It's the ENFPs. SpongeBob on steroids.

It depends on what you mean by artsy? Most "artsy" people are just normies playing dress-up, who will get offended if you fail to repeat their platitudes; but crazy people, whether they're artsy or not, do tend to be my crowd. In social relationships I enjoy intensity and honesty, because I am both an intense and an honest person.
You know when you've found your crowd when you are able to express yourself and your beliefs without being repentent for them, whether the person agrees/understands or not. Life is too short to be hanging around people who are narrowminded and refuse to accept you for who you are, for better or for worse.

So you're saying I would relate to and enjoy this book?

Don't spoil it I'm reading this soon. I know it's three decades old.

It’s a really good book, one of the few I actually genuinely like. It’s hyped absolutely for a reason.

Anyone got more recs for quality thrillers like this? Besides this, I’ve loved
The Magus
The Shards
The School of Night
The Talented Mr Ripley

There’s a giant gap between these thrillers and the rest. Writing, characters, having more to think about than plot twists. Any more to add here?

>The Talented Mr Ripley
This one is so so good! I like how the fact that Tom was scarred for life by his aunt is reinforced with everything he does and says. Although I honestly hoped he’s going to be apprehended at the end, book Dickie was not that bad of a guy and really deserved better.

I completely agree. Fascinating character. I’m realizing I like these characters/narrators who have something off about them. Know of other books like that?
>>

I recall reading “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” around that time (and this one also considered “dark academia” book), which I liked even though it was confusing, I still don’t get what was miss Brodie’s deal honestly.
Also - I’m gonna recommend some slop now, proceed with caution - I really like Chief Inspector Morse as a character. I deeply regret watching shows before reading because as immersive these books are, reading a detective when you somewhat remember the final reveal is not quite it, however it may work for a show.

I literally am still pining after having the Richard-experience, the same way a gamer be wanting a BPD Goth to rape and bankrupt them.

You mean you are going to be bullshitting me by feigning an interest?

No. I'd feign to bullshit, rather.
