The library I frequent has a Murakami novel named After Dark. Anyone read it? Is it good? I mean I'll probably end up reading it anyway once I finish the current novel I'm reading and the one I already set up for my next, but still, can't hurt to ask.

the reason im drinking btw:
I recently failed to achieve a significant lifelong dream, which I only got one shot at. immediately afterwards I found out my career was getting railroaded into something shitty that I did not want whatsoever and my options were to either just do it to keep my job or quit, with an extremely slim chance of getting accepted into another lifelong-dream thing that is contingent on a lot of luck and things going my way. I am pretty much emotionally crushed at this point due to the circumstances of my failure combined with getting kicked while I'm down, on top of living a life of almost total isolation and lack of intimacy or connection outside transactional workplace relationships with people who are essentially strangers. I have little hope for my life to get better and little faith in my ability to change as a person. the career thing I'm being railroaded into has a high chance of forcing me to live in the middle of fucking nowhere, further decreasing my chances of forming any significant relationships. I have also found myself caught between my religious beliefs and my sexuality and am staring down the barrel of choosing between remaining alone by choice forever or getting into a relationship I know to be contrary to nature and my morality.
at this point I am near fully convinced that I will spend my life behind a desk in a dark room somewhere wasting away.
pic unrelated but I thought it was funny

for me the issue is that I can't defeat my old self in the phenomenological here and now. meaning, I can hype myself up and think about how much I want to change and how I will act in the future, but there is no future me that I will ever actually experience - everything I will ever experience is experienced as now. and if I cannot summon the willpower to resist something, or to do something, in the subjective, experienced now, rather than pegging it to some future date that is not now, then it does not matter how hyped I get over it or how hard I try to motivate myself, because when the moment to do the thing becomes now, I find myself above a deep chasm full of reasons not to do the thing: excuses, laziness, reasons why it will go wrong or suck or cause a problem for me or others. these become overwhelming and cause hesitation, then doubt, then a retreat into the comfortable routine of the person I have always been.
when I have changed in the past it was never due to my own self determination but rather due to the circumstances of my life changing and forcing me to change along with them.
>>25554272
the lust is a symptom and not the cause. I do get horny, incredibly horny, but that is because my natural and good desire for companionship, intimacy, and eventually a family of my own has become distorted through years of isolation, and finds expression through the only available outlet I have, which is porn use. I do not believe that having a genuine relationship with someone would fix me instantly but it would anchor my natural desires in a real person rather than objects or simulacra (which are really just anchoring the desires in myself).
>>25554286
no. I don't know. yes. maybe. I think women are very cute and find them attractive but I get strange feelings for men at times that are much more intense and gripping than anything I have felt for a woman. most of my fantasies are actually not sexual at all but involve guys in some way.

I've seen this book floating around for a while now. I always thought it was some kind of science fiction equivalent to The Turner Diaries. Turns out Indigo has it???? I sniped that shit so fast dawg. Also while doing some research about the book & its author I found out that you indeed CAN buy a copy of The Turner Diaries dirrectly from its publisher -- I thought it was long out of print. I'll be ordering a copy once I have some more money. Turns out they have Serpent's Walk too but considering the fact that The Turner Diaries is $25 USD and w/ shipping, tax & exchange will come to around $50 CAD or maybe more, the opportunity buy SW by much more convenient means will make for the obvious choice y'know. I'm surpsied a woke Canadian major bookseller has chudshit but it looks like it's not available in the brick&mortar store and I'll need to pick it up in a couple weeks from my local Indigo location after it's been shipped there from the warehouse I guess.
Indigo may be really performative w/ the romantasy & chickshit slop but it really does have some really based shit if you only look hard enough. I've found so many cool books at Indigo over the years it's crazy actually. Once when I was a teenager I even found a copy of Mein Kampf, not even kidding. Not everything that's "cool" is chuddy either. Indigo is lightyears ahead of Barnes & Noble when it comes to substance.

Not that I'm against falling in love, I simply just wish to exist for a while and sort my life out before making any grand emotional commitments.

In a certain kind of way, experience only exists in retrospect and in anticipation.
Anyone who has been in a fight or crash knows this. The instant of impact is lost and forgotten, and all that remains is the memory of recovering. If the trauma is seen coming then that too will form a transformative memory.

And yes, i am traumatized.

This Russian friend I know shared a story by a Russian writer called Konstantin Krylov. Anyway at one point the narrator of this story (who you are not meant to agree with) goes on at length over the superiority of C-section babies over normally birthed ones, calling the ones normally birthed retards and subhuman.

Later on there's a bit about evil rapeporn and drugs, which I didn't have trouble understanding. But the thing about superior C-section births and subhuman labour partums absolutely me. So I ask my friend, and he says:
>Im surprised you mentioned that and not the rape porn bit
>I feel like the C-Section thing is pretty on the nose
What the fuck do you mean it's on the nose, Ivan? Do Russians just think differently from other people?

I'm 35 years old and I've never worked a day in my life. The ride is gonna end soon and I have no plan for the future, nor any prospects.

At least it was fun.
>>
Just woke up from a dream where a girl called me handsome and flirted with me. It was a nice feeling. Honestly, I probably would've had a really good and easy life if I were raised correctly. White, blue-eyes, average height, self-aware, artistic talent, 120-130 IQ, often called handsome by people when I used to go outside. Good sense of humor. Even my dick is 6".
Nowadays, I'm pushing 30, rotting alone in my room, no degree, NEET for years, can hardly work on anything at all. Crippled by insomnia, no friends, distant from family, all I enjoy is learning.
To tell the truth, it's a good thing I've ended up like this. People with abilities generally don't end up for a prolonged period of time at the bottom of society. That I have gone on for many years like this, but that I am still 100% sober and not on medication of any kind is probably a statistical anomaly. I don't have suicidal thoughts, I don't have meltdowns, I don't self-harm. I don't go to therapy. I just run through potential solutions like they're going out of style, and all of them have failed me.
Perhaps through sheer luck I'll find something everyone else has missed.

"After all, the difference between good mornings, good evenings, and good nights carries a meaning of its own.
Good morning is shared between lovers as they curl towards one another and kiss upon waking in the same bed. Good evening is spoken when they meet again at their romantic tryst, after having spent the day apart. But good night is exchanged for an entirely different reason, one that is painfully absent of the others. When your lover says good night to you, it means they are closing the door between you for the night, leaving you on the other side to sleep alone."

Look, if you vote Republican because of social issues, curbing immigration, and keeping America white, I respect that. If you vote Republican because you don't think the federal government should, in essence, take money from one group of people to redistribute it to another (whether in the form of food assistance, free healthcare, housing assistance, free college, whatever), that the government should just pretty much leave people alone as much as possible and let the economy and lives run by survival of the fittest, then okay, I don't agree, but I respect it. But if you do want the government to help people, to intervene and provide support and assistance, then yeah, that's the Democrats, not the Republicans.
>>
>>25555729
Honestly anon the Democrat cultivation of anti-American attitudes and factions within the US over the past 60 years undid all their attempted good governance. You cannot deride your nation and its founders as being evil and then lead them. It ends in disaster and annihilation.

Compare the US to Turkey. Turkish leadership might have been materially less competent than the American leadership, but the Turkish government has cultivated stanch patriotism and nationalism. Turkey and the Turkish people will exist in 200 years, which is more than can be said for the Europeans, Canadians, white Americans, etc.

>I don't really need
Oh god, don't tell me you're one of those "I don't have kids so why should I pay for public education" types?

In any case, look up any study, Republicans are far worse for the economy and the deficit than Democrats. Yes, in policy, the Democrats want to raise spending, but they also want to raise taxes, particularly on the rich, to pay for it. Republicans cut taxes for the rich and corporations without caring about the consequences, and get us into pointless wars, both of which balloon the deficit, and for what?

>>25555750
see: >>25555750

I'm not unsympathetic to what you're saying, but look at it this way: Democrats actually ask "what programs can be create to support those in need?" whereas Republicans give you false platitudes and pure pandering to patriotism.
>hmm, the Democrat is better in almost everyway, but the Republican took a picture in front of an American flag... I guess I'll vote the R!

But again, because I try to always be charitable, I do actually understand what you're getting at, but still, I'd choose the party that benefits the country materially and tangibly over the one that shows lip service to some murky, vague, intangible ideals a bit more often. Plus, when you look at how administrations actually treat the constitution and rule of law, it's no contest, Democrats are far better.

Cant we fight anti-patria ideas with simple reverance to history and ancestors? One shall not feel comfortable with slandering one's country. Isn't (almost) that what they have in places like Japan?
>the founders were evil
they were the founders, therefore they weren't evil. Actually, they were awesome and wholesome. Why? Because they were the founders.
>>
>>25555759
You’re not getting it. America can recover from misallocated funds, it can fix systemic problems…anything material. We could in the long run even rebuild our manufacturing.

What cannot be so easily fixed is the erosion of asabiyyah. Everytime a liberal attacks the idea of American patriotism, everytime a leftist (or white nationalist for that matter) cultivates ethnic factionalism, they weaken the centripetal forces keeping the US together. The Democrat party has fostered this current to the point that the long term survival of the US is in jeopardy. Are the Republicans incompetent? Certainly. But they get credit for at least agreeing with the foundational tenet that the American nation and American people are what they support.
>>
>>25555773
That's silly. I can criticize America for the various horrifying things it did in Vietnam, which were honestly just war crimes, or the systematic butchery of the native population of the continent, but I can also appreciate that it's a pretty badass country sometimes, with a lot to offer people.

>Being a founder of something means you're not evil.

So, basically, Jim Jones is not an evil man for being the founder of a cult?
>>
>>25555773
Yes, this is what culturally successful countries like Turkey do. You lionize the founders, you make them into mythic figures. Is the history at times messy? Sure. They are still your founders and you support them. It’s not a right wing attitude either. Look at China, they adore Mao despite all his failures. Meanwhile the USSR which went back and criticized Stalin began to crumble from that moment.

Compare your critique of the colonization of North America to the reaction the average Turk would have to the Armenian genocide. The Turk knows it happened. They also know that criticism of the Turkish actions of that time is the first step on the road to self-annihilation, like the Western countries have done. So you deny it and push back.

No they fucking don't. Were watching these cowards do fuck all while an orange pedophile enriches himself and his family after cutting taxes on the rich snd start a retarded war of choice after running on the opposite. Shut the fuck up.

>They also know that criticism of the Turkish actions of that time is the first step on the road to self-annihilation.

"Everything we've ever done is justified."

That is Nazi logic. Truly insane.

Has Germany collapsed because it accepted responsibility for the Holocaust? Obviously not, but I guess you can just say it will eventually, some day, somehow, for that exact reason.
>>
>>25555794
germany is collapsing because china is making better cars than them for cheaper and they have no tech industry
>>
>>25555796
Cool, so, by your logic, Germany shouldn't accept some fault in their economic system, because that would lead to self-annihilation.
>>
>>25555794
>Has Germany collapsed because it accepted responsibility for the Holocaust?
Obviously. The German guilt over the Holocaust has led them to shy away from remilitarization, has led them to rejecting patriotism and pride in German culture, and so on. Perhaps one can say Germany deserves such a fate for committing the Holocaust, which, sure, but we cannot pretend this is a good fate for the German people.

You might raise the point that these countries owe something to the people that they wronged. I actually agree with that, and am not opposed to things like reparations for slavery or going above and beyond in regards to preventing anti-semitism or promoting native land rights or whatnot. But the narrative at play cannot be based on guilt or “we’re sorry.” The narrative needs to integrate the sides of the historic conflict into the whole of the country.
>>
>>25555809
Yeah, I somewhat sympathize with that. Germany commited the worst of humanity, ever. By far. Aaaaaaaaaaggghhh. Fuck those guys.
But really, Germany has long accepted responsibility for the Holocaust, and still the remains the most influential nation in the European Union. Many Germans do have pride in their country. Deep pride, and a lot of that pride is derived from the fact that they're capable of understanding when they've done wrong.
I agree that the Holocaust kind of crippled their psychology with a subtle neurosis, but dude, there is no culture on the planet without some kind of weird, existential flaw.

>there is no culture on the planet without some kind of weird, existential flaw.
Not really. I’ve used the example of Turks ITT, but Arabs, (most) Israelis and Pakistanis also are completely immune to the self-hating/guilt complex which is the West’s bane. The Middle East in general is a place the West could learn from in terms of how to become a confident and strong culture.

403 Forbidden
‘403 Forbidden’
It was at the house on 403 Forbidden I first encountered a permanent and unforgettable crushing loneliness, nodding off towards dull unfinished walls which I had not yet understood as a youth. Seeking refresh I turned internally, your dirty clicks not providing any clearance. I began to imagine you, and the things you would say to me, and I took to writing you, and writing me. And furnishing those walls with us. I saw us in a vertical tapestry, you seeing me in rose and I seeing you as blue, we take to French Impression, your oil in my watercolor magic synthesis. I came to warm morning dawns, wondering if that home had been furnished again and I might see you. I turned the corner and saw something ugly, nothing refreshed, your flesh no use to me. I fear you serve better as a dream than as… this.

First person means self. I’ve been lonely for a long time yet I see brightness in my future. I dream of better days and my dreams become reality. I saw a woman the other day, I think she noticed me. I hope I muster up the courage, and hope it is not too wrong to make her mine.

Second person means love. You want to know the most beautiful second-person POV words in the English language? ‘Thank You’. Second person means to speak to someone directly, don’t you think so? You’ve always been a friend and my close advocate and I wouldn’t have written this without you. Thank you for everything.

Third person means watching, they say it’s not so bad, in hushed corners out of sight, speaking to no one. They can quite beautifully love from afar but often seek love-language. Deep scientists report strange activity from these subjects. They haven’t talked to that woman in a while. What are they doing? Experts puzzle.

You can't just try to perform a scientific experiment to discover a dragon, because that requires intent, and they operate a principle similar o wu wei, pure, natural, intentionless action.

-Ick, does not actually read Confucius. Did read the Tao Te Ching once. Barnes & Noble, special edition. Very pretty cover, kind of expensive.

Solo mira a tu alrededor, amigo mío. Pero no está tan mal. No bueno. Y así te dejo, yo, hombre muerto en el armario. Fuiste genial en la vida y te doy las gracias a todos.

I just think this notion of attacking or defending the idea of American patriotism (which I personally agree is important, don't get me wrong) is ephemeral. How is it gonna help people eat? Is it gonna provide citizens with healthcare? What about social security when citizens are retirement age? Don't get me started on foreign affairs and geopolitics.

I just see it as the things Democrats provide plus the level of incompetence of the Republicans outweighs any singular concern such as that, especially something so... intangible. Like I said, I like President Trump on immigration, but does it outweigh everything else? No. At this point, the Republicans are the un-American ones, pilfering the country, diminishing our stature on the world stage, and letting our lower-and-former-middle-class to languish.

Maybe if you're pretty well off to where Democrats provide you nothing personally, you have no sympathy or care for your fellow citizens' wellbeing, and you don't care about the ripple effects (eg public transportation allows poor workers to get to their jobs that we need in society, schools make people productive, you obviously want to live in a society where you don't encounter starving, unhealthy people everywhere you look, etc.), then okay, but man, is it really worth it? I don't see it unless you really, really hate poor people not even just minorities, because a lot of white people are suffering under Republicans too

You just aren’t getting it. The USSR did not collapse because of material issues, it collapsed because of the erosion of unity and belief, what Xi calls “historical nihilism.” The problem America faces is that a wide swath of American society is totally engrossed in this historical nihilism. The liberal/left half of the country is fostering this attitude (in academia, in media, etc.) and this will have disastrous impacts on the future of the nation. Material issues can be fixed. When a critical mass of Americans abandon the American mythos/narrative, it’s over. There’s no coming back from that.
>>
>>25556235
You make it sound like the Democratic party is like Mao with his Cultural Revolution. Can you provide some tangible examples beyond the removal of some confederate statues and lip service and pandering like President Trump taking a picture holding the bible upside down?

>The USSR did not collapse because of material issues,
???

pretty sure it economically collapsed

>The problem America faces is that a wide swath of American society is totally engrossed in this historical nihilism. The liberal/left half of the country is fostering this attitude (in academia, in media, etc.) and this will have disastrous impacts on the future of the nation.
Postmodernist and poststructualist philosophy and critical theory aren't so much normative positions but descriptive ones, anon, and this includes people on the Right as well. And again, given how this administration is treating the rule of law, I'd say the Democrats are looking way more patriotic and American at the moment. But all of this is nullified because some Republicans think the Confederacy was, like, so based?

Again, I'm not totally unsympathetic to what you're saying, but you're totally exaggerating its reality and influence. Democrats are still Americans. They aren't the ones cozying up to Russia and Putin and North Korea.
