Now the dust has settled, how you really feel about it?
>>
>>25557353
Sherlock Holmes but with magic and kids
>>
>>25557353
I read them at 8-9 years old. Was cool for the time being, now I don't feel like reading it another time.
>>
>>25557353
I happened to experience the books for the first time in my thirties(I have watched the first movies when I was young), and honestly as for Big Book of Millennials it felt underwhelming. I expected the language to be much more witty and flowery, and overall I expected it to be less fairytale whimsy and more dark academia. Although I see people praising them specifically for language, so maybe it’s me problem.
>>
They came out when i was a kid and i got bored and gave up by the 4th

I preferred His Dark Materials
>>
>>25557353
drop it before book 5 at the latest then jack off to hermione fanfiction
>>
It’s funny how Hermione has no girl friends
The closest is Ginny
The rest of her relationships with other girls is always bad. Lavender, Parvati, Luna even Rita and Trelawney
>>
>>25557396
Why couldn't Rowling write female friendships?
>>
>>25557370
>Although I see people praising them specifically for language
I've literally never seen anyone praise Rowling's writing for its vocabulary or prose and I've been reading these books since 2000. The anon that compared them to Sherlock Holmes is right. They are engaging and suspenseful little adventurous mysteries. They are also super successful because she writes boys super well, never once did any of the men feel feminine. A lot of women don't write boys well.
>I expected the language to be much more witty and flowery, and overall I expected it to be less fairytale whimsy and more dark academia.
Many people make this mistake. The books are children's book. Rowling's writing is purposely simple, but still written well enough that anyone who is a young, or weak, reader or writer will benefit from enjoying the books.

>>25557408
Hermione is Rowling's self insert. Having no female friends is kind of typical for girls who are more concerned with "facts and logic". Hermione's emotional intelligence does improve as she ages. In the earlier books she's described as a bossy know it all but it starts to drop off once Harry gains a bit more footing with his magic (he's still a shit wizard) but he does keep managing to escape deadly combat and other situations.
I actually think Rowling still does struggle with female companionship and acceptance, hence the feminism.

>I've literally never seen anyone praise Rowling's writing for its vocabulary or prose and I've been reading these books since 2000
It was somewhere on Reddit, I don’t think I can find exact quote, but it was to the effect of I liked that her style is simple and to the point, not overly ornate. Some people value that apparently ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>he's still a shit wizard
Made me kek here

>Made me kek here
There's a ton of fan fiction where people simply write Harry as a decent student that likes learning, who also develops into a competent duelist. But I think the way Rowling wrote it is still better, more realistic for how a child would behave in Harry's situation. The fan fiction is very good power fantasy junk food though.
>>
>>25557478
I’ve read some Dramione fanfics if that counts, the best quality were dead doves and DMATMOOBIL which I haven’t finished because they wrote Hermione unbearably overachieving, like say what you will but my self esteem is nowhere that strong to deal with that.

Sirius and Remus should have been canon

were any of you part of harry potter fan forums like the leaky cauldron or immeritus, or any of the dozen or more sites that used to exist?

>Harry Potter is a shit wizard.
>Wins the Tri-Wizard Tournament as an underaged participant and later becomes on Auror.

You are a fool, sir.
>>
>>25557518
Harry won because Cedric, the other Hogwarts' champion, died lmao. iirc he only got to become an auror through luck. Snape finally got the defense against the dark arts teaching position so he was able to use his shitty OWL level test results to get into the NEWT potions class with Slughorn. Remember when the sorting hat tried to put him into Slytherin? That's what it meant when it said he'd be great. Harry just gets by on his fame, people being willing to help him at all costs, luck, and having actual resources. He breaks the rules and McGonagall, a notoriously strict witch, doesn't punish him but rewards him with breaking school tradition to let him play Quidditch a year earlier. Dude was filthy rich, related to pure blood families, owned a house at age 14, has two magical elves as servants, his wand just happens to share a core with Voldemort's. He barely pays any attention in school, constantly breaks whatever rules he wants, gets a magic magic map, and invisibility cloak, a goddamn phoenix (the same one that help created his wand) gives him a magical sword, he bangs his best friend's sister. He's just constantly batting at a hundred.
>>
>>25557512
I remember the leaky cauldron.
>>
>>25557551
>Harry won because Cedric, the other Hogwarts' champion died lmao?
What? They both technically won at the same time, and then Harry single-handedly (sort-of) fended off Voldemort, the most powerful wizard ever, in a spooky-ass graveyard full of Death Eaters. Yeah, he broke the rules or whatever, but if he didn't shit would've gone completely wrong. He's basically like Trump, a true hero and lion. 10 points from Gryffindor for you, dickhead.
>>
>>25557556
yes that's called a tie or a draw
that's not a win it's half points
he literally got the win on default because the other kid got murdered
the sorting hat will not be putting you in Ravenclaw

Rowling is kind of a crap writer but her vision is so powerful her technical abilities become irrelevant. It also fascinated me how the real central themes of the series are actually profoundly trad & profoundly archetypal & concerned with the sustaining of coherent civilization, & without awareness of her external social positions one would never guess that Rowling is & almost always has been a raging radfem giga libshit; its like the story was so symbollically potent that its movement through her forced her to temporarily set aside her retarded political views in order to allow it to manifest. Also the movies are shit

These thai covers are lovely.

I thought they were great until book 4, which lost all the whimsiness that made it so good.

I like the Japanese bunkoban split releases, all the covers look like LN volumes.

That’s the thing that I see all the time about the books - you can never tell if JKR consciously planted that detail (likely not) or it just happened to fit in accidentally.
>>
>>25557562
Ok, so he was fucking tied fucking first, based on the fact he gave the Cedric to opportunity to join him instead of leaving him to lose.
Wow.
And the Sorting Hat DID put me in Ravenclaw. That's exactly what the test in Legacy proved.
Fuck you.
>>
>>25557565
>It also fascinated me how the real central themes of the series are actually profoundly trad & profoundly archetypal
You are just seeing what you want it to be, and you're not presenting a good faith argument. The books are anti-elite boarding school, Hogwarts nearly gets shut down few times because they do such a shit job of protecting the students. Harry and his supporters defeat the wizard nationalists and blood purists because they want a more egalitarian, free, less prejudice, and fair wizarding society. Not sure how you managed to spin the story into right-wing trad fantasy in you head.
>>
>>25557580
I'm like 100% sure she planned it. I think it could be argued that had he been in Slytherin the final fight against Voldemort could have been even easier. And the story would not be nearly as interesting. It would just be even more people using their privilege to help a lazy Harry at all costs.
>>25557581
LOL
>>
We, the well read people
Agree Harry should have ended up with Hermione, right?
>>
>>25557591
>The books are anti-elite boarding school, Hogwarts nearly gets shut down few times because they do such a shit job of protecting the students.
I don’t agree at all. I feel like overall danger of wizarding world is a running gag throughout the series - which I actually enjoy very much. I don’t think they would ever treat the danger that students are facing seriously, it’s more like upping the stakes before the happy resolution.
>>
>>25557608
Nah. They don't have any chemistry in the books. The few times when it's just Hermione and Harry hanging out, because Ron is angry or hospitalized, the barely talk and don't do anything besides homework. Even in the finale when they are camping together they don't talk or get along until Ron returns.
>>
>>25557608
I for one do not care who ends up with whom. Really, it feels annoying and cliche that final wrap up merely revolves around who married whom.
>>
>>25557618
The whole ending of Azkaban is Harry and Hermione together and they really work. That’s just one example
Also, Hermione leaves arguments with Ron crying at least twice
They are not compatible
>>
>>25557591
>The books are anti-elite boarding school
Please. Half the popularity of the series is due to Hogwarts being an extremely appealing setting which all Potter fans grew up wanting to attend.
>>
>>25557644
Yes but literally no one attending a boarding school because they thought it would be like Hogwarts. By all accounts real life boarding schools are kind of miserable, I rarely see anyone that has attended one speaking positively about their experience.
>>
>>25557629
I'm not in favor of Ron and Hermione. I'm just pointing out that Harry and Hermione is cope.
>>
>>25557655
Maybe they are, but that doesn't change the fact that Harry Potter made the boarding school Hogwarts seem like the coolest thing to millions of kids. No ten year old who read the series came out of it thinking worse of boarding schools than they did before they picked up the books.
>>
>>25557665
No people just specifically liked Hogwarts and wanted to attend only Hogwarts. Ten year old me knew that real life school would only be worse if I had to be stuck living there. And as far as I knew, no real life boarding schools were in castles, so that made them even more unappealing.
>>
>>25557685
You're either fooling yourself or you had no friends if you believe kids didn't romanticize boarding schools due to Hogwarts.
>>
>>25557696
The reason most kids don't want to be shipped off to boarding schools is because they have friends who are their neighbors and classmates.
>>
>>25557717
You're speaking in platitudes because you lack the real world contact with Potter fans back then.
