Calling it "Hell" is pretty generous. It's only temporary unless you were really evil.

Kek that's why he's Il Sommo Poeta
Seriously he is a pleasure to read, Petrarca too
>>
>>25558364
True, the only real description of hell in the bible is a "lake of fire" (lava), where God chucks people and demons inside to burn for all eternity, regardless of the severity of their sins. Pretty harsh, if you ask me.

Has anyone ITT read any more than the Inferno?
>>

To tell the truth, I never read either Dante or Ariosto.

What's funny is that IRL, Dante was completely in the wrong. He was the bad guy. If you actually read into the Guelph/ Ghibelline conflict it basically comes down to one side completely betrayed Florence, and all their values, and, in order to win the feud, called on the Emperor to come subjugate it under his boot. Dante wrote long, flowery letters to him, asking just that. Not because that's what any of them initially wanted. But because that was the only ally they could turn to in their spat.
So he was a traitorous asshole, got rightly exiled, then spent the rest of his existence fuming over it.

I'm on Paradiso

Can you enjoy this without being religious/Italian?
>>
>>25558437
Dante was loyal to the Church when push came to shove. He really was truly Catholic, he should be a saint.

Italy is a 19th/20th century construct of the North and the Stalinist Fiat Plant / PCd'I. You can enjoy it without being Italian, but you need to be religious (any mode) or irreligious. Having "no position" on religiosity means you won't enjoy it.

There's a lot of "prophecies" regarding Florence in the poem as well. All of them are either events which had already occured at the time of writing or predictions of the collapse of Florence, the city that would go on to be at the heart of the Renaissance.

He sided against the church. With the emperor, against the pope.

>>25558493
He loved Florence but sided against it and that turned into desperately wishing for its destruction
