I never read philosophy until I was 30+Thinking "ill just come up with my own philosophy as I go".But I got into it as a research project for a new book I'm writing, and its so interesting.Some things like Plato's concept of death, were things I had considered on my own and never formalized. Others, like Heidegger's being-in-the-world were very new to me and interesting.Even if you don't believe a word of it, the theories are fun to entertain. Anaximander's cosmology is cool, I don't care if its "wrong".And in a way too you can think of it like painting. When you have limitations or a framework or theme, the painting itself becomes much easier to start work on. In the same way, reading philosophy gives you some general frameworks for you to base your own ideas off of. I've come up with all kinds of theories bouncing off of the various philosophers that I've studied so far.
