Im not woke or gay but Harry Potter is actually a great series. They are comfy books and reading them on release was unironically a magical experience that you can’t replicate today.

>>25564022
You have Brandon Sanderson's books.
>>
>>25564023
Niche series that has had a tiny fraction of the popularity and cultural impact of Harry Potter
>>
>>25564022
They felt like an iteration on the Enid Blyton adventure/mystery formulas, but fantasy and with some weak attempts at Roald Dahl style humour. The main thing I liked was that they'd have a bunch of random subplots going on at once and it wasn't clear which ones would turn out to be jokes and which would turn into major plot points.
>>
>>25563443
The biggest literature phenomenon of your lifetime.
>>
>>25564032
The best part of HP was the world building and I liked how each book had progressively mature themes like the series was aging with the reader
>>
>>25563443
I tried reading this at the height of Pottermania, but even as a kid I thought it was boring as shit.
>>
I only read the first book. I remember thinking it was better than the first movie. I haven't read the other books or watched the other movies.
>>
I enjoyed the first 3-4 of these and remember my dad and sister and me would all await the latest release to take turns reading the single copy we got.
It was like someone took a Roald Dahl book, made it a little worse and a marketable series.

After the 3rd or 4th it stopped being a Roald-like and moved to being pure YA, thats around the time I stopped reading.
>>
Is this series actually worth a read? All I heard is that the charm wears off after the 4th book. Is it really just carried by nostalgia and bended the imagination of young people at the time? I was too stupid to read books by the time the series finished and I believe it mainly aimed at YA by the time the final book released.
I'm willing to read the series if its somewhat good with worldbuilding.

Not writing, but I've been trying to figure out how to handle the Sectumsempra bathroom scene but what a tough nut to crack without it leaving a bad aftertaste. Nothing I come up with really works. I even considered having Draco(nia) take Polyjuice Potion so Harry initially thinks he's fighting Goyle, but it doesn't work becuase the Marauder's Map would give her away.

The best I've come up with is having her actually hit him with the Cruciatus Curse, with Harry casting Sectumsempra in a desperate attempt to break free, reacting through the pain without really thinking. But then you lose the trivia that she can't crucio him, because the unforgivable curses need INTENT and if she has feelings for him she doesn't want to hurt him anymore than what she already did, ash she stepped on him and brokehis nose at the beginning of the book.

It's hard to make the scene work if Harry already has feelings for her, it feels too disjointed and aggressive if you try to achieve some romance perspective for both.
>>
>>25564413
5th book is dry as fuck and I gave up on it for a few years, 6th had a few good moments though
The series is best when it uses the setting to set up really absurd unlikely situations, either for humour or to fuel the mystery

I first read Harry Potter as an adult about 6 years ago. I thought it started off pretty good for a kid's book but the plot/characters/reading audience outgrew Rowling's writing ability about halfway through. The few books were really poorly written. Her best work has been on Twitter.
>>
>>25564949
The publisher also urged Joanne Rowling to use a pen name with initials because they thought that boys wouldn't buy the books if they knew a woman had written them.

Listened to this because it’s free on audible. Fun romp that’s oozing with SOVL. I forgot these all have a fun “scooby doo” reveal at the end that sort of puts a new twist on everything that came before. Overall a good book. I’ll probably listen to the whole series just to say I did it. I was part of the age group that it was targeting but I wasn’t allowed to read/watch it because it was black magic or whatever.

Book 2 would have the biggest change.
>Ginny doesn’t get Tom’s diary, Malfoid is given it and is instructed to give it to a blood traitor or something.
>Of course she tinkers with it and she ends up opening the Chamber of Secrets, with Tom feeding into her intense disdain for Harry, but does bring up the stubborn crush she’s hiding on him in the depths of her heart
>She gets thought to be a potential candidate for opening the Chamber and it really fucks with her social standing, not to mention calling Hermione a mudblood out of frustration
>Chamber of Secrets plot progresses, Harry saves Malfoid
>Malfoid’s worldview begins a slow change, maybe gets punished by doing house elf chores for a week
>Book 3 she tries to impress Harry by her abilitty to handle Buckbeak
>She gets wounded, tries to stop the info from getting out
>Her father’s informed anyways, Malfoid pleads to Harry she doesn’t want things to go down this way
>Lupin’s class with the Boggart, which transforms into each student’s greatest fear
>Malfoid’s is her father scolding her for “snogging Harry Potter”
>Complete out of nowhere moment for Harry, Ron, Hermione but not careful readers
Maybe get a cute scene of Malfoid stressing out over Sirius Black entering the castle. Harry would still feel icy towards her until Book 4, when Ron’s being pissy with him for allegedly messing with the system to become a Triwizard Champion. They’d findd out they have a lot in common, and when the Yule Ball comes up, Harry doesn’t have anyone to bring, only for Malfoid to suggest they go together “for the shock value” (or some actual reason that isn’t a copout). A sweet kiss moment gets interrupted by Hagrid’s drama…

Idk, all I got for tonight. But I really like the possibilities.

Harry Potter genuinely fascinates me because it has such a strong initial appeal, yet every single detail or plot event or character arc that is analyzed or contemplated spoils like milk into contradictory nonsense.

If literature is marked by its hermeneutic depth, the fact that it keeps endlessly enriching and revealing itself to more it is read and re-read, Harry Potter is almost the perfect piece of anti-literature.

I must admit this does make it more interesting than most bland, incompetent books. There's genuinely something deeply wrong with it in a way i find fascinating.

>>25563569
we arent' "seething". we're just simply ignoring it, like the ladies and sirs we are
>>
>>25566036
I'm writing one rn, no gender bending though. Girl. Born as. I’m putting a disclaimer in the first chapter so people know what to expect I’ll stay as close to canon as I can, but only rewrite the excerpts I find interesting, in no particular order. With the assumption that the only change to the history is that Draco is now a girl.

>Her parents and upbringing.
I’m going with the assumption that fathers tend to spoil and protect daughters more than sons, while mothers tend to be stricter with daughters about behavior and presentation. Lucius will love Draconia (his little dragon) as deeply as Draco, but indulge her more and shelter her from his dark dealings, leaving her lto believe that her father truly was manipulated by Voldemort. Narcissa on the hand, will impose higher expectations. Draconia will therefore grow up both spoiled and sheltered by her father and pressured to meet her mother standards.

>Her social image and academic performance.
The main aassumption here is that girls tend to care more about social image and perform better at school, reinforcing desires about appearance, posture, reputation, and status. Draconia much like Draco will want to uphold the Malfoy name and be seen as the best. Combining Draco’s above-average academics and good looks with stronger motivation, she will (try) to study harder to become an honor student, while still using underhanded means. Her desire for succes and attention will clash with her spoiled expectation of how easy she can always got whatever she wants.

>Rivalries.
Here I'm using the assumption that girls tend to be especially competitive and cruel toward other girls than boys. Hermione will become Draconia’s main rival after Harry with their academic competition making the rivalry more personal: Hermione’s success threatens Draconia’s desired status and worldview, so her ambition and hostility reinforce each other.

>Social group.
I’m using the assumption that a girl in her position would have closer female friendships, while boys like Crabbe and Goyle might combine obedience with attraction but keep adequate distance. The other characters remain unchanged. Draconia (Dracy), Daphne, and Pracy form a trio, accompanied and protected by Crabbe and Goyle. The boys remain her minions, and later, simps.

Cont...
>>
>>25566213
>Violence.
Here, the assumption is that girls tend to be less comfortable with serious physical violence, but more confortable with emotional violence, and that a sheltered, spoiled upbringing can encourage impulsive outbursts without preparing someone for their consequences. Draconia may lash out in anger or fear but her pride, poor emotional control, and Draco’s retained cowardice create tension between impulsive aggression and its undesired consequences.

>Her relationship with Harry.
Harry and Draco already have a dynamic and obssession with each other written in a way only a female author would write, don't quote me, Rowling is the one who used the word "obssessed" in her book. Going with the assumption that a boy and girl who constantly think about and watch each other may develop confused feelings alongside hostility, especially during adolescence.
>>
>>25566215
>Her relationship with Harry
needs to be a thing in the late game only, with some teasing and buildup to it starting from book 4

Hard agree.

>First Year
Fluffy changes. She uses Goyle and Crabbe as stand-ins in her confrontations with Harry.
>Second Year
Fluffy changes. The duel still happens.
>Third Year
The height of her bullying and rivalry with Hermione, with a twist during the Time-Turner situation involving Buckbeak.
>Fourth Year
She tries to use Harry’s isolation during the Triwizard Tournament in her favor. It backfires when she finds herself in a newspaper story about a love triangle between her, Hermione, and Harry, courtesy of the Witch Weekly paparazzi. She ends up in the lake and has to be rescued by Harry.
Should they avoid going to the Yule Ball together because of the rumors? I think they would, they're teenager after all and fall easily under social pressure, well, I don’t know yet, but what happens is that they end up sharing an unintentional moment in the ball, people see it, and the rumors only get worse.

They make sense as her simp orbiters, especially if they turn against her when her feelings for Harry becomes clear.
Mirroring how Harry's friends don't turn against him when he confesses to them his feelings Malfoy.
>>
>>25566307
No swaps, just be Draconia/Daphne/Pracy's bodyguards and simps.

>>25566313
If not Harry who would she end up going to the ball with to "cleanse" her name?

>>25566306
>Fifth Year
This is the big one.

Rumours that she’s a house traitor because of the Harry situation make her more and more isolated. It’s just teenagers hungry for drama, smelling an opportunity to bring the alpha bitch down. She starts spending most of her time in the library.

This gives her a moment with Hermione, where they end up talking in a less hostile environment and sharing a moment over the Buckbeak incident.

In the Hogsmead prank incident she finds herself hesitant to insult Hermione, Harry ghost prank ends up saving her and she's the only one the Ghost doesn't mess with, she just take the opportunity to bail.

According to the books, Umbridge had a special hatred for beautiful young girls, and for that same reason, she finds joy in refusing to let her join the Inquisitorial Squad, keeping her isolated. Out of spite, she ends up helping Dumbledore’s Army and finds herself with them in the Room of Requirement. She doesn’t feel welcome at first, but Harry insists on vouching for her. Her initial inability to conjure a Patronus ends up hijacking Harry and Cho’s moment.

Things progress, and she ends up in the Department of Mysteries with the other kids, where she finds out that her father really is a Death Eater. Lucius orders her to join his side, and she just can’t find the courage to disobey her father. When he orders her to point her wand at the group, instead of attacking, she conjures an extremely bright Lumos to cover their escape. A Death Eater takes her away, and she doesn’t participate in the fight.

>Sixth Year
Another big one. Pure Angst. But funnily enough, aside from the very beginning, from what I've seen is mostly fluffy changes and some unresolved feelings that add to the drama. The scenes hit way harder though.

>Seventh Year
The only thing that changes is the climax. But it's such a better payoff.

I like the idea of her joining Dumbledore’s Army, especially if she practically stumbles into admitting that she wants to be included.

>Outside the Room of Requirement, Harry, Ron, and Hermione stood facing Draco.

>"How did you even find this place?" Harry asked.

>"I don’t know. It just appeared out of nowhere. Listen, Potter, I just really wanted to…" Draconia’s voice grew quieter as she realized how that sounded because of the incessant rumors. "Talk to… you."

>An awkward silence followed.

>"About Umbridge’s Inquisitorial Squad, that is," she added quickly. "I wanted to warn you."

>She unfolded a piece of parchment and handed it to Harry.

>"These are the corridors and passages they’re watching. Avoid them, especially after dinner. They’re trying to work out where you’ve been meeting."

>Harry glanced over the parchment, then back at her. It's clearly she was trying, if only she knew about the Marauder's Map.

>"Parkinson’s watching the staircase outside the library," Draco said. "Warrington’s covering the fifth-floor passage. If you’re going back to your common rooms, avoid both."

>Harry glanced at Hermione before looking back at her. "How do you know?"

>"Because I was there when they were told." She folded her arms. "And stop leaving together. You’re supposed to be running a secret society, not a school outing."

>"Anything else?" Hermione asked.

>"Yes. Tell Longbottom he’s being followed."

>"Neville?" Harry said sharply.

>"Umbridge thinks he’ll be easy to frighten into talking. Parkinson volunteered."

>Ron’s expression darkened. "Of course she did."

>"And you, Granger. She thinks you arrange the meetings."

>Hermione pressed her lips together. "What have they been told to look for?"

>"Notes. Dates. Names. Anything that tells them where you’re going." Draco glanced at the stretch of wall behind them. "If you’ve got a list of members lying about, I suggest you burn it."

>"Can they just search our things?" Ron asked.

>"You can ask Umbridge that while she reads them. You thickheaded prat."

>"... I'm not that thickheaded, am I?" He looked at Hermione.

>Hermione looked at Harry. "We need to warn everyone."

>"There’s something else," Draconia said before they could move. "Warrington wants to corner one of you and start a fight."

>Ron gave a short, humourless laugh. "He can try."

>"That," she said, pointing at him, "is exactly the sort of helpful response he’s hoping for."

>"What’s the point?" Harry asked.

>"He insults one of you. Shoves them, perhaps. They pull their wands and use something Umbridge hasn’t taught them."

>"She hasn’t taught us anything," Harry retorted.

>"Which makes her next question rather easy, doesn’t it? Where did they learn that spell?"

>Ron studied her. "So we’re supposed to let him shove us around?"

>"You’re supposed to realize he’ll have friends waiting to swear you attacked him." Her voice sharp. "Don’t give them what they want."

>For a moment, nobody spoke.

>They all gave each other some awkward stiff little nods. The three of turned to leave and as they took two steps away, she spoke again. Lower this time, but high enough for them to hear it.

>"...Must be nice, having a place like that all to yourselves."

>They stopped looked back. Draconia had her arms crossed, her left feet was stomping the ground, her face had an comically stuffed pout while she looked at nothing in particular.

>Harry looked at Hermione. Hermione looked at Ron, who felt a laugh almost escaping.

>"Well, princess," Ron said, "say, if you really want to join us that much, you can just, you know... ask."

>"Tch..." Draco made an indignant little sound and turned her head away, as though asking for anything of the sort of them would be beneath her.

>The three exchanged another glance, this time with small smiles.

>Harry turned back to her.

>"Would you like to join us, Dracy?"

>She looked at him, trying to appear offended.

>"We could use one more instructor for the Army," he added. "It's just me and Hermione now, we could use a student like you."

>For a moment, she kept her stern expression. Then it slipped. There was something almost puppy-like in the way she looked at them, suddenly hopeful and waiting to see whether they meant it. A softness in her voice they've never heard before.

>"Yes."

thats a fucking lie, even if they dont feel attraction to each other there are various scenes that would change simply because malfoy is now a cute girl, i doubt harry would cut girl malfoy with sectumsempra and if he did he would feel even worse than he did in canon.
And if you add girl malfoy liking harry in a tsundere way the plot breaks in 2
>>
>>25566325
reminds me how people used to point out how better the plot of naruto would be if sasuke was a girl
>>
>>25566406
malfoy being a teenager girls makes all the stuff that Voldemort does with malfoy even worse.
>>
>>25564925
>Largely nothing would change
How do you people find yourselves on a literature board? Swapping the sex of a siginificant character obviously recontextualises their interactions with others.
>>
>>25563443
Yes
>>
>>25566500
>>25566489
Nothing would change because Draco is just a standin for Rowling's real life bullies. That's why Slytherin is so shallow in her books, it's just the bullies and evil group.
I also don't really care to think too deeply on some fanfiction concept that doubles as wank material for the most pathetic dregs of society.
>>
>>25566505
A male bully character is different to a female bully character even if their exact words and actions are identical.
>>
>>25566468
>>25566475
oh quite nice
>Dracy
heh, cute
>>25566505
you dont even need to think deeply you fool, just the rule 63 by itself changes any single moment even if a bit.
>Rowling
the fuck she has to do with anything? people are just doing fanfic based in the original plot and interactions, how Rowling would write it is irrelevant.
>>
>>25566509
Not really if the writer has no interest in writing the character as a person. There's a reason why most fans have to make stuff up about Draco to make him seem deep and/or interesting. He's largely a two-dimensional villain with I think one moment of depth in the last book.
>>25566510
Have you ever actually read a real book or are you from /v/?
>>
>>25566517
>Have you ever actually read a real book or are you from /v/?
Of course i have anon, you for once just don't really seem to have any imagination if you dare to say "nothing would change", try to read more fantasy stuff its good for that
>>
>>25566522
I highly doubt it.
And I'm saying nothing would change because the only aspect actually related to /lit/ would be how the author would write it in that case. We know Rowling was shallow and didn't like sympathies towards her bully stand-ins, so nothing would change.
>b-but fanfiction
I don't care about fanfiction, this isn't the fanfiction board. That's /trash/. Fanfiction threads are BANNED on /lit/.
>>
>>25566523
I disagree, if you dislike this so much why even come here to post? just ignore what you dont like.
>>
>>25566526
Because it's a free board and I can post anywhere I want. If it makes you upset, good.
>>
>>25566528
I does not, i just expected you to actually have more deep of a opinion than
>Rowling wouldnt write like that so its useless to think about how it would go and i hate fanfiction
but whatever, if you want to stay here and be salty be my guest, its not good for your blood pressure tho
>>
>>25566517
It doesn't matter how a character is written. The distinction is imposed by the reader based on their own understandings of gender dynamics. A line will be read differently if it is said by a male character versus an otherwise identical female character.
I shouldn't have to explain this on a literature board.
>>
>>25566533
I hate fanfiction like the kind in this thread, because it's self indulgent drivel.
Make a /trash/ thread if you just want some fantasies to jerk off to. It's pathetic to do it in public like this.
>>25566534
See above.
The extent of intrigue in this discussion in the realm of literature is how the author would do it. Gender dynamics are a completely different subject with their own books, and there is no interest in discussing those here because, again, this is just some fetish wank material shit.

>Swapping the sex of a significant character obviously recontextualizes their interactions with others.
>Even if they don't feel attraction to each other there are various scenes that would change simply because malfoy is now a cute girl.

Of course. You're both correct. It's just a peculiar case because Draco reads like a stand-in for Rowling's childhood bullies, which were obviously, girls. It's kinda funny how little effort it takes to just shoehorn Malfoid into Malfoy's place.

>I doubt harry would cut girl malfoy with sectumsempra

He would, just the same. Harry cast that spell in a panic; he wasn't thinking. Draco got as far as "Crucia-" before Harry blurted out the first spell that came to mind. He didn't know what it would do. He really didn't. The only description in the Half-Blood Prince's book was: "for enemies".

>And if you add girl malfoy liking harry in a tsundere way the plot breaks in 2
Why is that?

Again, you're not wrong. Just let us indulge for a moment. It's a fad and it will be over soon enough.

The thing I would ask is are the English still Liberal, is the Whig History and History of the Whig Party still a thing that is taking place
>>
>>25566566
>And if you add girl malfoy liking harry in a tsundere way the plot breaks in 2
because it would change how malfoy interacts with harry? her getting a crush would obviously cause that, heck she may even not fuck up as hard as malfoy did in canon if she actually learns to understand her feelings and stop being so tsun before book 6.
>>
>>25566566
>Just let us indulge for a moment.
Indulge on /trash/.
If you post on any other board, you may as well be advertising that you have some kind of humiliation fetish, since you're begging for people to come in and call you fucking weird for posting offtopic garbage.
Or at least post only on /v/ and /tv/.

No, because we're talking about harry potter on a harry potter thread.
It would be off-topic if we had created a thread for Malfoid and her art, now if OP made a stealth thread for it, that's on him, but if there's any place to discuss Harry Potter on this website it's here.
>>
>>25566569
The crush can just come later.

Even so there would be attraction, plus i doubt it would take her literal years to get a crush in someone, that often happens fast if you interact with someone a lot.

The early books are very good as entry level literature (aka for children), but otherwise it's mostly wasted potential, all the interesting ideas are ultimately very underdeveloped. The whole Malfoid meme is a perfect example of people filling in the blanks.

A love potion." Snape repeated flatly.
"I didn't say the word love," replied back Draconia, "But yes, something of that nature."
Snape sighed, but continued writing, not bothering to look up at her.
"What symptoms are you experiencing?"
"A quickening heart rate. Shakiness around the... suspect. Unusual emotional responses in the presence of the suspect. Intrusive thoughts of the suspect. Romantic ideation." Draconia's face blushed as she said the words aloud.
"And who might the 'suspect' be?"
"I don't see how that's relevan-"
"Miss Malfoid, this is a very serious accusation. It is my responsibility as a professor to inquire fully. Who is it?" Snape finally set his papers aside, looking up at her from his desk.
Draconia twiddled her wand in her fingertips, refusing to even look in his direction.
"...Potter.", she said, pushing a lock of silver hair behind her ear.
"...Potter." Snape repeated.
"T-that's what I said, isn't it?"
"Potter can hardly brew a sleeping draught much less a-"
"Then Granger brewed it! Or he stole it! I don't know! Can you just test me? Or something?"
Snape stood up, seemingly annoyed by the whole ordeal. He turned, reaching into his cabinet of restricted potions, rustling through them, looking for something.
"And why, pray tell, would Potter do this to you?"
Her heart skipped a beat. She hadn't considered that. Why would he? Unless he... She shook her head, as if the thought could be shaken out of her.
"To humiliate me, obviously. I bet he's having a grand laugh right now at my expense. Stupid Potter." She clenched her fists, indignant.
Snape turned and produced a small potion of silver liquid.
"Drink this. It will cure you of whatever may, or may not be ailing you."
She swiped it from him and held it up to her lips, but paused. Why did she pause? Drinking this would cure her of the love potion, it would make these inconvenient feelings go away. So then why isn't she drinking it? She clenched her fists, and chugged the potion before she could second guess herself again. She stood there, eyes closed and cheeks pink, waiting for something to change.
"How long until it starts to wor-"
The corner of his mouth twitched slightly "The effects are instant."
She stood there for several more seconds, holding her breath, until Harry appeared in her mind again, and her pulse quickened.
Her eye twitched, "Well clearly this has been a huge waste of time."
"Obviously." Snape said flatly.
